I have vague memories of being carried in a hurry into the Cinema because we were late, as there is a door near the screen always we came in and walked under that MASSIVE space ship during the opening battle.
That was pretty awesome as a kid smilie Don't think I understood any of it at that point but watched it many times over my life after.

Granted Skylanders is never going to be Star Wars, but don't discount them completely from having value in the future. The problem is you can't predict these things because if you did they wouldn't have value as everybody would keep them smilie

It is often the things you don't expect to have value that do, so I think it's possible. Give it at least 20 years before we find out.

I think I was 4, and I remember arguung with my father while leaving the theater after seeing Empire. I thought Vader was lying to Luke about being his father. Seemed unfathomable to me. :/

Yes, but it didn't take anywhere near 20 years for the Star Wars stuff to have serious value. I remember those toys were quite valuable by the mid 80s. The space ships were pretty sweet for the time period, especially the Millenium Falcon.

And I have no desire to hold onto gobs of toys in hopes that they might be valuable in the future. Seems like such a waste.

I had that Millenium Falcon and all the original Star Wars figures as a kid. I believe my mom threw them away. :-(

Yes, I too did not believe it was true when I found out, but I found out before Empire was out. I was a member of the Star Wars Fan Club and got the magazine in the mail every month and that is where I read it, but thought they were just trying to see what kind of reaction they would get if it was true. At the time I could not get myself to believe it, but when I saw it on the big screen, I then Believed...

As for the toys, I had 90% of all Star Wars toys along with the ships and buildings/locations and sold them at my Garage Sale to have money to buy games for my Nintendo...

When I was a kid, Empire was especially current, especially the toys. I actually saw Star Wars and Return Of The Jedi a BUNCH of times before the first time I saw Empire, LOL! Just worked out that way, only saw Empire for the first time in the 90's. But when I was a kid, it was the Empire toys. I know we had some. I know we had a pop-up book, I specifically remember the page of Luke in the Ice Cave, and sliding something brought his lightsaber to his hand. I know I had Luke's Sand Speeder from the first movie, in the style of Hot Wheels (metal toy with wheels), but larger.

So yeah, that is a major point, that Star Wars was FAR more mainstream. Skylanders, in my real life, only my nephews know about it, my mother, brother and sister-in-law only knowing them by association from me and my nephews. Other than that, nobody even knows the name. That SERIOUSLY hurts the longevity, especially in this kind of future speculation. It will take a LONG time to have value, at least 10 if not 20 years, not 3, and then only by the kids playing it now who want them for nostalgia. And not having a game to use them in will likely hurt their desire to have them again.

Star Wars is far more mainstream than most things, though - than almost anything. Things don't need to be quite as popular as that. Still, I think Skylanders is quite a bit more popular than you think. It's popular enough to be taking up a solid 25% of the entire video game section of my Target.

If people don't have kids then they don't know what skylanders is, even some kids don't know about it, this isn't something that everyone knows here like Star Wars, Disney, Pokemon or Mario. It doesn't take up 25% of the game section, maybe 5-10% if that. Even at TRU where I expected to find a huge selection of Skylanders it amounted to only about 5% of the video game department.

It varies from store to store but at one of my local Wal Marts and my local Target the display takes up as much space as an entire system's video game display. If you don't believe me I could take a picture. Skylanders is extraordinarily profitable and popular for what it is. If a store sells out of it, sure they will make the display smaller, but when they get a big stock in they will make room for all of it, because it sells well. I'm not sure if it's possible for a toy like this to have better sales.

We're sort of getting off topic here. I was never trying to say that Skylanders would become super valuable. I'm simply not sure why people think the series is not doing well.

FYI, Disney Infinity Wii has a rating of 2 stars out of 68 reviews on Amazon and is a HUGE disappointment landing 46 1-star reviews which you can go read for yourself, where for Skylanders the Wii is still the top seller. Infinity for other consoles is much better, but alienating the Wii crowd is a pretty big deal. I think Skylanders will be just fine in light of that debacle - though I realize the two are not necessarily in direct competition.

Actually, we just got our first Targets this week, opening Monday, I visited one today, Wednesday (for fellow Montrealers, the one at Place Vertu).

THIS was the entire Skylanders display:
[User Posted Image][User Posted Image]

That's it. One side of one aisle, and maybe only one quarter of the aisle. About the same as the Walmart I visit (except THEY have a shelving section for the giants in addition to this), smaller than the EB Boutique (I believe it's a reduced version of EBGames) I also visited today.

All in all, all of these small displays (rarely even remotely empty) suggest that Skylanders isn't popular around here. And I live in Montreal, one of the top ten largest cities in North America, last I knew.
