With regard to typing, I think the main issue there is that a lot of folks in the younger generation can't (or won't) differentiate between their grammar-less Twittering and typing with actual English when they're on a message board.
I work part-time as an academic tutor, and I wish I was joking when I say that some high school English teachers now have to formally state that no internet jargon or acronyms are acceptable when writing a graded essay.
Although I don't think most young people do this, apparently there are enough doing it that it's grabbed the attention of entire English departments in some high schools.
Anyway, I love that example with helping Uncle Jack off his horse. It really gets the point across about the importance of grammar ... at least to most sentient humans.
