Just a friendly reminder that not everybody wants this topic locked. If you want to contribute, I think it's a good idea to bring up problems you have with the game. Surely it isn't perfect to you.
Personally, I hate that they are removing Heroics. They are repetitive, but the main game is- and Heroics broke the mold of the main game because they had a completely different pace. Heroics lasted for a long time and gave you a greater sense that adventuring with your Skylanders actually did make them change. With them gone in SF, it will sharply cut down my replay time, especially since it has even one less level than Giants(19 V 20- I don't care that 4 in Giants were old, they still made the replayability have more variety since you can also use new figures in them now). They should have just made it that all 50 were unlocked straight away in SWAP Force. Or better yet, add an alternate form of on-figure customisation that was gained with actual effort, not just going to a menu and selecting a small stat boost. @OimakKamio Just because the game was made for kids, if there are problems in it that are glaring to us, it doesn't mean that we can't bring them up.

And just because its kids game doesn't mean they can't fix the problems that glare some of us, its not a good excuse for anything mentioned here. There are lots of Kids Games more complex than this. Plus remember its rated E+10 (ain't your kid a little young for this?), about the average age where kids start to get at least decent at video games and play online (or at least when I did), I'm sure at least some of them can still tenderize everything easily.

No arguing just conversation...you know I had to call you on that ;P . Again I think this thread got civil on the back pages. Plus the overall mood of the thread is valid. This franchise has a high potential for burn out. I think it's still inexcusable that they don't have a real online mode yet. Plus I think Light Spyro simply got a little too passionate there for a bit. In the end he was willing to explain his views and opinions which is respectable even if you don't agree. Personally I love SSF and while I feel the game play length was appropriate I still want more...and that's a good thing.

Wow you guys are overreacting. If anything is causing pointless discussion and arguing in this topic, it's the posts you guys are making(and this post). The last page of posts has been pretty thoughtful besides the "omg this topic is back!" posts...
Really. How big of an impact did this topic make after it died? None. But I agree with icecube. I made a post about SF here. I will say, however, I really didn't like the 3DS version, even though it was better than last time- which is a big downside, as the multi-platform fun was one of the reasons I got into the series(first game on 3DS was da boss! So many memories). Another downside is the way that they are releasing waves. The same as last time: America gets the first wave several days after the game- before the UK had the game at all, this time. I hate it. Giants was a nightmare. This time, we don't get the admittedly poor pre-order system we had before, either. I'm going to have to check my stores like crazy, otherwise they will sell out within the first week and never appear again for months, and I'll have to use eBay. If this system continues into the next game, I will need to seriously reconsider wether I care about this franchise for the effort involved any more. SA had better stock. I also disliked the story implementation, which I posted about here. It's a better story than Giants- it's a good story on its own, but... It's just not involving any more. I'm tired of games that are trying to be movies which we've been seeing more and more, if you want to have a lotta cutscenes and an important narrative, put the player in the story, or just be a movie god damn it. Also, the figures feel kinda pointless since Heroics are gone, you can just grind Gold to upgrade them, yadda yadda. However, this is a lot better than I expected since you can get Gold from EVERYTHING, I don't mind it much any more, though I still miss Heroics but in some ways I'm also really glad that they're gone. Since Quests now give you bonus Health, they're a small, albeit decent consolation. I am happy that Quests became useful. I just wish that they would give more value to every individual toy- between what the 3DS version has done to them and how Portal Masters are barely even mentioned in the console version, there's less magic than there's ever been in them. And toys to life is what made Skylanders unique. Will I buy the next game? I'd really like it for new characters and chapters... But there are a lot of issues that they still haven't fixed in SF like skipping cutscenes, and I'd like to see more chapters than this, I don't feel like replaying them much... and I miss Portal Master magic... It depends on what they do, I honestly don't know, I'm already running out of space and if they don't make certain improvements then I won't have much reason to buy the next game, besides stuff that will always be there- more chapters and new characters. I'm also kind of worried since TFB are making it, and to be honest, nothing they've done (besides SA's story) interest me as much as VV's work, overall.

Why all the "close his topic" shouts? Jeez.
I collect a variety of things. I don't need every iteration of something to have what I feel is a complete set. None of us do. Monster in my Pocket at some point turned into silly looking toys with paint splashes, as as much as I loved those I knew I was done and just finished up what I needed. Same with Transformers toys; I liked Prime's stuff. But I didn't need to continue to Beast Hunters crud to keep enjoying it. So Swap Force is probably that point with me. I made peace with the game and enjoyed it more but honestly...I've got my collection where I want it. Everything has a place on my shelf and I really don't need more. Most I may get in newer games are some of the undead reposes from later games so I can enjoy both paths with toys like Roller Brawl and so forth. But I have a list now of what I still need to get, and that's to finish swap force and the missing Giants variants, do the rest of my display, and move on. And I'm cool with that. |

AoA: Good post, this is basically where I am now. I'm not sure Acti has the fortitude to make just enough changes to keep it interesting, or will the franchise basically start drifting south. I'm curious to know sales, I get the feeling they aren't doing so hot this time around.
KFM: I was worried that without engaging -- must return content---people would focus too much on figures...your case is a negative case for them since they didn't do enough for game content to keep folks coming back.

Well the figures factor in no matter what. We know with the next game we are, more than likely, going to see the flagship characters: Gill Grunt, Spyro, Eruptor, Cynder, Stealth Elf, Trigger Happy. And that's not a bad thing, having identifiable characters works. Using the above Transformers example, you're almost always going to have an Optimus, a Megatron and a Bumblebee: that toy kids look at, recognize, and grab.
But the end result is, if you collect you end up with figures you'll now never touch. Say you collected everything from the first game. Now you got ahold of each of the reposes from the second and then the third. You suddenly have a useless S1 Stealth Elf, useless S1 Eruptor and so forth. There's no reason to keep them even for the alternate upgrade paths. And even with that you end up with a lot of figures you just never touch. I have three Cynders now and have honestly only played with her once. The only reason I'll be grabbing the fourth (S3 toy) is the sake of completion. My reaction to that new Wash Buckler variant was about the same too: I own regular and Dark, why would I want to pay for a variant of character I only pull out for climbing challenges? Not to say nobody plays with them all, there are probably plenty of people that do. Just I end up noticing when a lot of my figures do nothing but chill on the shelf more than on the portal (I'm looking at you, Water Elements that aren't Green Gill Grunt) With the first two games I'm honestly in for a penny and for a pound; I'm going to complete those sets because I've come this far already, no reason not to (I'm literally 3 away from doing so before I need to save up for chase variants and scour for bargains on them). But with swap force I've been extremely picky with what I buy; I'm in no rush to 'catch em all'. And I only see that getting stronger with the next game. |

KFM: Good reasoning...so, regardless of content in the game...this is simply your current and future spending on the game--meaning why spend now if they will be regarded as "nearly useless" in the future, or does the game itself have a part in your decision making?
For me, completing the first game character wise was a joy. They all provided unique content worth the price of admission. With the second, I learned about "reposes" and that I got almost no additional value from that character other than one wow pow---and you needed it for true completion of the game and upgrades of characters. Now in the third, I'm focussing on only new characters, and I'm reluctantly will be getting reposes but only for accolades (I don't plan on taking them out and REALLY playing them like previous characters). I've also decided to stay away from chase variants (in game variants will be decided on the fly based on household demand). So, like you, my focus is specific because of the decreasing scale of value to me and what the game truly places on future value (outside of allowing the characters to work mind you). I'm however also focussing on the content. I think they overall did a great job in some areas in regards to content, and absolutely horrible in others. They are however overall are "getting there", but want more gameplay and less screen cinema (I think AoA mentioned this as well). AoA: Critique vs Hate. Good indeed.

Yeah, a large amount of screentime which doesn't add that much and less play is a pet peeve of mine in video games. You know, I wouldn't mind if companies would just do something as simple as adding the feature to totally turn them off(not skipping... Just totally turning them off). I pick up a game to play, not watch. If I want to watch something, then I'll pick up one of my DVD/Blu-Rays, or sod off to YouTube. Or, god forbid, change from the HDMI input to the digital TV channel.
![]() I don't mind as much in games like Zelda so much because those are interesting stories(not to say that way is perfect or other stories aren't interesting), and they don't feel so out of place, and since Link doesn't talk you could imagine you're him, the adventurer, in those cutscenes. And in those games, the gameplay is so good, and you still get to interact a lot, so it's still a very good game, just as a game. Or, the way that it was set up in Kid Icarus: Uprising, where the "cutscenes" (for the most part) played at the same time as the game, and gave the characters more personality while NOT falling into the trap of turning it into a movie in denial. You know? It's just frustrating when a game has a lot of cutscenes that would just be better if you compiled them into a movie, instead of having them- bluntly- "interrupt" the actual gameplay... Or, "impede on it"... I think that's more of an issue of personal taste, though. Still.

I'm not done with this game but my new plan is to buy the swap force game (Yes I did not spend one $ on this series) and figures before the next version of the game comes out. Why you might ask? Based on the current trend, older figures are losing too much value and you are correct that they are "nearly useless" in future version of the game. This IMHO is how Activision is shooting themselves in the foot. Their concept of reposing is not only making any previous version of the figures useless but is (1) also lowering the value of the previous figures and (2) is hindering the sales of older/newer figures. The figures are meant to be collectibles and I wanted to collect them all because I know they are suppose to have value but that is not the case. Why invest in something you know will lose value when you can purchase it at a later date and pay only 10%-20% of the original price. I'm also not worried about not finding specific older figures because Activision produced so much of it. I am also experiencing figure fatigue which is also caused by the reposed figures. I mean how many times do they want me to buy Eruptor and stealth elf? Yes Stealth elf is an awesome character and figure but having like 4 versions is looking more like a money milking scheme. I think Activision should just stop or minimize the reposes. I don't mind the light core version and real variant versions but making too many versions of the same figure is getting really old. Activison should give us a reason to hold on to the older figures but so far they've done so little because the bigger money is on the newer figs. Also something really bad is about to happen if the trend of reposes continue. At one point people will start unloading their older figures in mass to the market because the figures have no value both in $ and as a collectible (and newer figures ARE better!). When this happens at an extreme point then the market will get too saturated and this could lead to more decline in the value of the figures. It will be a sad once the older figures (SSA) reach a point when they are less than a $ a piece. Also if other people are being smart about their money this time around then they might decide to get the game and figures when they are "going out of style" to save. TBH I'm actually happy the prices are falling because I can complete my collection at a lower price but is not going to help Activision's bottom line because I won't be buying figures at MSRP prices. Without any solid reason to hold onto the older figures then I see a lot of people simply dumping their older toys. Now in terms in gameplay I have nothing to say because I did not buy the game BUT I think this was the reason I bought Disney Infinity. The second game was too short and the heroic challenges were too repetitive and have no long term value in terms of gameplay. I can't battle online so no point making all my figures fully upgraded. This is Activision's fault. We voiced our demand for some type of network or connected play but it has not happened yet. Even getting the battle arena to work over a network would have pushed people to invest more time in the game and figures. Again would be nice to use my favorite and fully upgraded figures against someone (over a network) other than my kids. If the network or online feature was included in swap force then I would have bought it without any hesitation.

I think the discussion (not argument) is a good one because maybe Activision will listen or pay attention to why other players are not spending as much as the first 2 games or why people like me will not be spending a single dollar on this game (for now). The fact that some people are throwing less money at this game is also something Activision should not take likely and something that every fan should be aware of. I'm very interested to see the sales figures for this game. Either way I'm sure Activision will change their business strategy for this franchise and I'm interested to know if they are paying to attention to us fans and to other complaints, suggestions or ideas about this game.

Well, they appear to have heard you... the game seems much, much longer than Giants. And once you beat it you still have time trials, arenas, score attack, Swap zones and side missions (basically heroics that give a boost to all 'landers, not just one). There is an epic ton of content in this one. Since you have a lot of figures already, it'd be worth seeing if you could find just the game on the cheap, and get the new figures this time next year when they are on sale. |
