I hate using the iPad. It doesn't have features like a microSD card slot like the Windows or Samsung Galaxy tablet do. So I've been thinking about getting either one of those two and then jettison my stupid old iPad.

We currently have that and the PS3 versions. I was thinking of getting the dark pack for one and the standard pack for the other.
14yo is mad about Lost Islands so we have all ended up playing. 3 iPads and 2 iPhones.

Ever since I learned about the Dark Edition starter pack, I've decided to get that instead of the normal pack.

Ok, I'll bite. Other than the fact that you can't expand the storage (no card slot), what are your other issues with the iPad? If it's just that one, your problem could be solved by either purchasing a unit that has the amount of storage capacity you'll actually use (ie: don't buy a 16GB if you have 32GB of stuff you want to jam onto it) or don't keep it crammed full of everything you've got going on in iTunes--load only what you need. Uncheck apps you aren't using in iTunes and turn on "manually manage my media" so you don't load your entire music/video/etc. library whenever you sync. I've had a 32GB iPad since launch (of one generation or another) and haven't ever managed to run out of space, despite having hundreds of comics, thousands of photos and about a hundred apps on it. When I get done with something (finish my comics, no longer play a game, etc.) I remove that content and free up the space. Tablets aren't laptops and shouldn't be treated as such, so there's not really any need to have everything on it at all times, ie: you don't need extra storage if you don't cram everything in there including the kitchen sink. -Doug

I just wanna much cooler tablet than the iPad. Besides, I also like to save my data onto a microSD card is all and then transfer to my laptop. |

Well, you and I will just have to agree to disagree about anything currently on the market being "much cooler" than the iPad. If the Android operating system got a severe overhaul and actually got to be halfway intuitive and user friendly and Android tablet manufacturers stopped making everything out of plastic, I might change my stance. IMO, the iPad is still infinitely "cooler" than anything currently on the market, even if it's not necessarily as versatile (without a little jailbreaking, anyway) as a lot of Android devices. Edit: Also, I can transfer most data that I need/want to from my iPad to a laptop/desktop/etc. Via iTunes for official apps that support it or via SSH for not-so-official apps. There's also a ton of 3rd party programs out there that will read your iDevice's file structure without having to jailbreak it and offer the exact same capabilities. You may be able to do more with your iPad than you realized. ;-D -Doug

Buying the right capacity is easier said than done. I thought a 32 GB iPhone would sate me, but app are bloating bigger and bigger nowadays, giving me room for less of them at once. Besides, the price premium between versions is way more than the equivalent SD card is. So you not only can't upgrade your storage as new tech is introduced without replacing the device entire, but you pay more for the privilege. |

Dropbox is a much better method of transferring files, and it's backed up to the cloud. And it's OS agnostic to boot.

The last time I checked/heard about it, you could still return an Apple item within a retailer's return period (had a friend return a 32GB iPad and purchase a 64GB instead at Best Buy), so purchasing the right size isn't nearly the touch and go feat that you're making it out to be. While apps are getting more bloated, what could you possibly be needing to carry around with you that would eat all 64GB on a device formatted primarily to be an entertainment device? If you want to do serious work, use the right machine--either a laptop for lighter serious work (or where portability is a must) or a desktop for the real heavy lifting. Anyone saying "I'm a pro [whatever]" and them whining about how their iPad/Galaxy/whatever won't cut it gets no sympathy from me. Wrong tool for the job. As for the cost of equivalent sized memory, you're correct, you could get a 16GB or 32GB jump in RAM on an SD card for less. But it's much lower quality memory with a much lower read/write speed. It might not matter to some, but I was ready to tear my hair out, gouge my eyes out, etc., trying to load my sister in law's 10GB of DRM free comics she's purchased on her laptop to her Android tablet this past Christmas. With a 32GB "ultra" 100x SD card installed, the transfer took north of 2 hours. I can move the same amount of data onto my iPad in around 10 minutes or less. Is the savings you make on the memory at the start worth it in the long run? Nope. I'd much rather pony up for a better, faster product up front and reap the benefits than be stuck lagging for the entire time I'm using my device. The extra time might not seem like much, but when you're trying to load something up last minute before an unexpected trip, emergency, etc., it makes all the difference and pays for itself in spades. -Doug

As long as you know your complete suite of apps off the bat, sure. I was happy with 32 GB at the time, but now I wish I had more and it's too late for that. Quote:
Right now, on 32 GB iPhone (~28 GB actual capacity), I've got 17.5 GB of music, another 1 GB of audiobooks, and 9 GB of apps. Ideally, I wish I had room for the rest of my music library, my comics library, and my ebook library (if I can ever find an app using the Adobe SDK that handles 1000-plus book libraries well). Quote:
I guess I tend to think long-term. Generally, I'm only loading that data once, so I'm not saving myself those 2 hours on a regular basis. And in a year, when I want more storage space (because I've bought more music, more books, more apps), I can buy a bigger card. You're stuck buying a new device. |

You may outgrow your device over time, but if you do (outside of your 14/30/whatever day return period) you can always buy the next step up next time or even sell your existing device and pay the difference for a larger item right then. Expanding the amount of storage you have on the fly is convenient, but I still can't see it as being a total deal breaker. Quote:
Well, I get pretty sick of a good chunk of my music library pretty quickly when it's on rotation, so I swap out fairly regularly. Having EVERYTHING with you at all times would be the most opportune, but in those instances you should just buy a dedicated music player and be done with it. A 160GB/320GB iPod Classic is a much better fit in that instance than trying to cram who knows how much music onto a 32GB/64GB iPhone. You get to take everything with you and you don't eat up space for apps on your phone. Or, you know, rotate/manage your media as you use it. ;-D Quote:
Not really. I don't keep my entire library of anything on any of my devices--I'll load a large number of comics/books/whatever that I'm interested in reading at the time and start going through them at my leisure. As I read them, I delete them, freeing up that space. If you have to have your entire library of anything with you at all times, buy a lightweight laptop, shove a big drive in it and drag that around, because using a tablet or phone as a media enjoyment device and expecting it to have an incredible amount of capacity (beyond the current offerings) is a bit ridiculous in my eyes. The most you can possibly stock an Android device with is, what, 128GB (64GB onboard, 64GB card)? You can't possibly need immediate access to all of that data at all times. Data management is a much easier solution no matter the flavor of your device. Adding and adding and adding storage just keeps things cluttered like an episode of hoarders, lol. -Doug

Apple things break WAY too easily, and lag once the new version comes out and an update is pushed. Not to mention that they're overpriced, and eventually stop running new apps altogether. You just can't defend that and have people take you seriously.

I went with a kindle fire hd 8.9 last yr over the galaxy tab and ipad. Ipad looked cool but for what i use the kindle for i'm glad i didn't buy it. Ipad wasnt worth the price in my option. I only use the kindle for movie watching and web surfing when i am not home and don't feel like bringing my notebook computer (like lunch break at work). I plan to start using it to watch shows at the gym soon and if i break it i'd rather be out $250 then $400-$500. Not saying the kindle is better then the pad etc thou i do feel apple items are too overpriced in general.

I haven't had anything Apple that I've own break yet. If they break "too easily" it sounds like many folks (yourself included?) don't take quite as good care of them as they might. Yes, a lot of the newer stuff is made with/of glass. Just as with the drinking ones, don't drop it. Do I have to be more careful with my iPad than with a generic Android tablet that's basically plastic save the internals? Yes, but I accept that. Lag once the new version comes out? How so? I'm still running an iPad 3 ("The new iPad") on 5.1.1 and haven't seen any lagginess, slowdowns, etc. Or are you talking about the fact that newer software that has higher and higher system requirements keeps coming out? If so, that happens with everything, not just tablets and mobile devices. In the tablet world, you can't add more RAM to speed things up (note that I said RAM and not storage) like you can in the PC world, no matter who made your tablet. Once the current generation of apps' hardware requirements exceeds what your device can put out, you'll have to suck it up and buy a new one no matter what logo is on it. As for stopping running new apps altogether, have you ever looked at just how fragmented the Android ecosystem is and just how many devices can't run the newest apps? Apple will have to take a backseat to the throne of planned obsolescence to the various Android manufacturers on that one. Most manufacturers throw out their devices as quickly as possible with no plans to ever update them or offer updates for them. If you want to argue the virtues of third party distros (CyanogenMod, for example) breathing new life into those devices and prolonging their lives, just remember that there's not a working version of such software for every device and most are simply abandoned after launch. In recent years, Apple at least gives compatibility for a few OS updates before leaving hardware behind, and even some of those get new life via "third party" firmware, such as Whited00r. As for people taking me seriously, who cares? I like Apple in a sea of Apple haters. Oh noes, my feelings will be hurt if everybody doesn't love me despite my unpopular beliefs...oh wait, I don't care. If you think throwing out a couple of poorly thought out, undefended cliche arguments about Apple products is enough to invalidate my point of view and/or previously made arguments you're sorely mistaken. Make a good point, think it out and prove it and we'll likely have something to talk about, I might even agree with you. Keep throwing out "hurr hurr Apple sucks because their stuff's expensive" and don't be surprised when you're ignored. -Doug
