LOL! I have seen that video before and never even noticed that. Looks like S1 Spyro, Gill Grunt and Double Trouble. I guess Disney took "inspiration" from Skylanders afterall.

when i first saw Infinity..that was the first thing i thought of...."oh disney wanting to cash in on what Skylanders did...heaven forbit they could think of there own game....oh no...lets copy somebody else." Also its was the first thing i said to the store associate..."interesting..looks like skylanders"...he said "oh no it completely different, theres is set up..blah blah blah" forgot what else he said. Looked like a exact ripoff to me. Im sure some things will be different ...so they can't get sued.

I will NEVER support Disney Infinity since they COMPLETELY stole Skylanders idea... Can't believe there hasn't been a lawsuit or something!

For the people screaming "rip off", this was always going to happen. This technology is far too innovative to not copycat. Skylanders wasn't just a new game, it was a new phase of gaming. Future kid games will suffer without the physical toys concept, and the added income of selling figures is too attractive.

In the video, in the very next shot, where they're showing the female cowboy from one of the Toy Story movies (I haven't seen that one so I don't know her name, LOL!), initially above her hat you can see the very Skylanders water-base, but in neither shot can I identify it. In the far shot it just looks like a blob, I think they covered it in electrical tape to disguise it, but still left the base visible for some reason.

hehehe... ooh! Disney got it BAD!!! I've already started boycotting disney. (I love watching previews, and my brothers wanted to skip them. and the first preveiw was disney. I screamed "SKIP THE PREVEIWS... NOW!!!!!") but this is the only disney thing I'm gonna see... should I report this to the FBI?

It doesn't matter if they remove the video, everyone has seen this now! I certainly won't be supporting DI (mainly because I'm not fussed on any characters) but this just seals it as a Skylanders copy.

Probably found what technology was needed.

I don't think it's possible to copyright or patent an idea, such as using RFID in toys.

Disney are allowed to copy the VERY good Idea behind Skylanders.

Will the game be any good? Remains to be seen. We ALL know they copied the basic idea but that doesn't mean anything. It all comes down to what they do with it.
If their game sucks, it sucks. If it's good in its own right? well done Disney.

We all know what to expect from Disney, if anything they are consistent in their actions and attitude.
Skylanders has a huge head start and a massive following, I don't think it is in danger from DI.

They can take the RFID in a toy and make a game with it... I think... But if they do it only because Skylanders got a lot of money with this, IT'S COPY!!! And if they also took SKYLANDERS to make their own figure, They are really BAD AT ALL!!!Never support DISNEY INFINITY!!!

Yes, we all know they copied the idea.

The point is, that is LEGAL. Not only that, it's a good idea!

Games have been around for a long time, and right about now EVERY game is a copy of some other idea.
There are no original game ideas left. Does that mean nobody should ever make new games because they are copying old ones?

Imagine if Mario64 had never come out because they didn't "copy" the idea of a 3D platformer.

People need to learn this is how technology works and evolves. It's competition which is good for consumers. I guarantee that every company that creates products has their competitors products in the R&D labs. I bet that Apple has Galaxy S4 and other phones around their workshops and vise versa. Heck I bet the next Iphone will have NFC, but that doesn't mean they copied Samsung or Sony.

Okay. There are multiple ways of looking at this. They could just have the figures with them, because they just have them around the office and they like the series.

Or, and judging by how quick they were to remove the video this is a possibility, they could be reverse engineering the figures. Now, whilst there's nothing stopping them from using the same technology as the figures (because it's not something Activision own the rights to) there is somethings stopping them taking apart the figures, the portal etc and seeing how they work. That violates Activision's EULA.

It's why emulation of the portal and the figures has been removed from the internet, and they do their best to hid Skylanders editor software because it mimics the read/write capability of the games.

If it is true that they have been reverse engineering the technology directly from the Skylanders figures and portal, they could face a heap of trouble.

The developers of DI say that they created toys to life complete BS

In my opinion reverse engineering is just a way to create competition product.. For me i prefer to see it in a good way, with a competition activision will need to keep their game quality high and will be pushed to amuse us even more.. Skylanders are in a lead regarding experience and fan numbers with their collection.. So its up to them to keep it that way.. Thats me and my positive view of the topic.. More creative and mindblowing skylanders figures are heading our way fellow skylanders fans !!!

Directly reverse engineering Skylanders would be an exceedingly bad thing for Disney to do. It would end in litigation and court battles for years.

Having the toys as "inspiration" because they think they are cool, is only damaging to them in reputation. They are admitting Skylanders was there first and possibly better.

EITHER of these is enough to get that video removed ASAP. Disney do not want either message going to their potential customers.

All that said, I don't think there is anything Disney would NEED to reverse engineer. Everything in the Skylanders toys is common knowledge except for the Game specific stuff like how to read the data which Disney don't need to know and/or don't care to know.

I more expect that the people in that office are Skylanders fans, which is simply great for Activision, not so much for Disney.

btw, anybody interested in the technology behind Skylanders can ask me (PM), I know an awful lot about it all now.

How many different variations of match 3 or scrabble games are out there now? There are probably hundreds of different ones all working slightly different. Should you boycott Gears of War because it is a first person shooter game that came after Halo (or doom for that matter)?

Disney infinity is the same physical concept...just done differently. Competition is good for consumers because it drives prices down. As the two (or more) companies compete for the dollars in your wallet, you will see better sales, more frequently, for both games.

Personally, I will not be getting Infinity for my 4 year old right away. I will probably grab a Craigslist deal to get the game and some characters around Christmas.

Well, we take apart our skylanders to see how they work. But, I get what you mean.

Plus it would be stupid as Skylanders use known public technology.

RFID and MiFare are commonly used all over, there is NO NEED to reverse engineer anything.
Unless they want Skylanders figures to work on the DI portal!!! which I doubt.

I like how in the video, and previous videos for Infinity, they try to say they had the idea to do toys for the game for 3 years, which would "supposedly" mean they really came up with the idea.

Based on this pic... yeah, right.

Kind of reminds me of the videos for PlayStation All stars where you could clearly see a Wii in the background, indicating they were more than likely using Brawl as a baseboard for things.
