Pretty cool read about Skylanders and Swap Force. Nothing really new (although I don't recall seeing that Rattle Shake screen before) but they do reveal that at one point, the Swaplanders had swapable arms and heads and that the reason jumping was removed from SSA and Giants was that little kids weren't able to figure out how to jump...

Also from Forbes: http://www.forbes.com/sites/er...loper-ray-west/ While Spyro’s history was indeed platforming, we’d done plenty of platforming in our Madagascar games, and something we learned is that younger players have real troubles with the kinds of precise character controls involved with jumping/platforming. We’d watch Madagascar 2 playtest sessions and these 6- and 7-year-old kids literally could not walk in a straight line; they’d oversteer with their control sticks so they’d wobble back and forth, not be correctly lined up so they’d miss the jump and fall to their deaths. Over. And. Over. |

I learned difficult timed jumps at 3, thanks to Crash Bandicoot.
How would kids have trouble with it? Jeez.

Exactly I use to be a part of a gaming club/hang out and I saw a kid die so many times on easy difficulty (forgot what game) on the first level. Also I met a kid that I crushed in a pokemon battle. (Not at the club I met him this summer at gamestop) His team was a single mewtwo and he told me all his moves and such (psychic, protect and 1 other psychic special attack) and allowed me to prepare my team. Thinking he couldn't lose. I defeated him with a level 1 Rattatata (FEAR strategy) He was so mad that he broke his DS in half. Spoiled brat and a nub

"But as it stands, we’ve spent more time as a family playing with the toys in the physical world than in the game."
The intent was to show how cool these toys in the real world, but the unintended effect to me is that there isn't enough content to enjoy the game and that it lacks re-playability. Now with 12 chapters, I wonder what they'll be saying in October...

To be fair, most of the games we grew up with were on a single plane, so lining up the jumps wasn't such a mission. And even in the first 3d games, the path tended to be fairly linear - quite unlike the wide open areas in Skylanders. |

This doesn't reall suprise me. I got into video-games a little later than some due to parental restricitons, but still at age 7:
-I had mastered Rainbow Road on Mariokart64 (much to the annoyance of my friends) -Had played and was kinda good at a Mario Part on the N64 -Had played an arcade Sonic game, and had beaten the first 3 bosses. -Could beat quite a few levels of Ms. Pac-Man (Oh fond memories of that arcade model) -Yoshi's Island (Or whatever was on N64) was kinda easy in a fun way too. The fact kids couldn't figure out jumping makes me just shake my head at the world today. I don't know about you, but when I have kids, I'll be raising some Gamer babies who will be great at games.

I get the 2d vs 3d thing. I remember cursing at Mario 64 when 3d was pretty new. But for good or bad, jump can be designed in a game to be kid friendly...as this game will obviously attest to. I even like how in some of the sections I've viewed that they make jump a requirement while at the same time retaining some of the push puzzles of the previous iterations. Maybe there will be some flaming barrels to deal with

It's worth pointing out here that it's not they couldn't jump - it's that they kept MISSING the jump. Also as to your examples: Rainbow Road had no jumping - and it was one linear path. Sonic was 2d. Yoshi's Island was 2d. Ms. Pac-Man was 2d and had no jumping. And last but not least, lots of people on this forum are life long gamers (which is great). But what about all the other kids who never got past the forth or fifth world in Sonic. Just because the people who were good at games ended up here, lets not pretend that our generation was that much better. |

And again, that's great for you... but those are all 2d (other than the kart racer). Aiming and timing a jump in a 2d game is far, far easier than in a 3D game.

But you started on Sonic, so you knew games. How old where you when you got to N64 games, and how much experience with the controller did you have by then?
*sigh* I'm not meaning any offense here, just saying in testing the kids where unable to land the jumps. It is what it is. |

MarioKart64 was probably the first video-game I played. I was 7. I went to a summer Day Care when I was little and they had an N64 and 4 arcade consoles (Sonic and Tails (or something with them), Ms. Pac-Man, and 2 I don't remember.)
