Well we had the rare opportunity to visit TFB and meet with Robert Leyland - the creator of The Power Portal. We had a pretty good chat and when he learned we didn't own the earlier portal with the letters that glowed on the side (which is the coolest portal IMHO), without hesitation he offered us one of his wireless ones. We had him sign it too. Totally stoked about it.

We really wanted to use the portal with glowing letters when playing the game on our 360. We also wanted to save Robert's signature on the wireless version for display in our collection. We did some part swapping with a spare Xbox portal we had and some more modding to the wireless one Robert had given us to be used for display purposes only.



We know sharpies are suppose to be permanent, but did not want the risk his signature rubbing off during game play.


Here's the piece we needed to make the letters glow on the Xbox Portal.


We wanted to hang this portal up for display and figured out a way to make it light up without needing "juice" from a console. We used one of those LED stickup lights that uses a magnet to toggle its on/off switch. We cut out an Activision sticker from one of the starter packs to disguise the rectangular magnet. This is what we came up with...


With the magnet off the wireless portal lights up! It's not the best lighting choice, but if we can find a more circular LED light, then we will for sure swap it in. For now this is good. LOVING THE NEW PORTALS!!!!

I liked the old design better from an aesthetic standpoint, but no doubt they made concessions to handle the USB power requirements (or maybe to save costs, dunno). Definitely cool on the signing; thanks for sharing!

I posted some mods like this myself at one point. I wanted a portal that glowed on the top, sides and bottom. I basically did the same as you and swapped out parts from two different portals.

Very cool tutorial - that's how I did it too. Very easy mod.
