Do you think from what we've seen in Giants (mainly in the Wilikin Level) that the Skylander series is trying to have something deeper to it? Like maybe a deeper slightly darker, similar to what Adventure Time with the post-apocolyptic setting and Ice Kings insanity along with his relationship with Marceline. I, personality, believe it is, and I love the idea of it. What do you think?

I don't think we have seen the last of the willkin. I also dont think we know why Kaos's parents have left their home? I haven't played SSA yet.

That's a good example. Kaos' family left in a big hurry, yet we are never told why they left and where they went.

Yeah. I'd love it if Skylanders were a little deeper. Or at least plenty of bonuses for us old enough to get complicated/hidden plots.
Also, the Wilikin are awesome, and have some somewhat creepy lines. Paraphrasing: "We were made to serve master, but we do not like to serve." If I didn't know Kaos had created them, that line would've been disturbing. And why the hex do they have so many skulls and piles of bones and death traps in their tunnels? And don't get me started on the sewing room or the whole "Trolls don't swim" thing...

Darker is better. Dungeon crawlers need just a touch of evil.

My friend came over one day, while I was playing Giants, and he mentioned that Giants felt darker than the first game.
I personally think it does have a darker tone to it, but that's in no way a bad thing.

It's very unlikely that a genre of game that's targeted at the 6-12 year-old demographic is going to become "dark".
I'd say that Giants is more polished and a tiny bit more mature than Spyro's Adventure ... but "dark"? C'mon, ya'll are reaching.

With the Wilikin level, I really felt like they were starting to get into more of Kaos' back story, but then they just left it there! I thought we'd end up with some explanation of how Kaos and the Wiliken parted ways, what big event happened that changed everything, etc. In that level they kept hinting at some rather large developments in their past, but they never explain... That's one thing I think I might miss when I don't continue on with Swap Force, that they might continue that back story. Then again, that one isn't by Toys For Bob, so the same writers may not be involved, I don't know. And that whole "Mother?" thing seems to suggest they'll continue at some point, if they get the chance (I believe Swap Force will fail so bad it will kill the franchise, so anything not established there never will be).

Of course, my signature (as of this writing: "Polar Whirlwind is a sick and twisted Sparity reference!") points out how Polarwind is a sickening joke by the developers, but we won't go there.
Kingdom Hearts has probably got a somewhat lower demographic (all its games are E10), but that doesn't stop them from throwing in complicated (among the most complex of all videogames) and even heart-wrenching plots and themes.

I have NO idea what that Sparity thing is about, LOL! I'm guessing a reference to a game I haven't played.
oh, and yes, please go there, you have my curiosity piqued! LOL!

I am very eager for Skylanders to have more depth, be more complex, harder etc.
I love the whole concept but remember, it's for KIDS! My Kids love it and so do I, but they can't leave the core demographic too much. Maybe this is a case for DLC with more complex levels and puzzles etc. |

Actually, it's an MLP reference a brony acquaintance pointed out. Whirlwind=Half Unicorn, Half Dragon Polarwind=White offspring of a unicorn and dragon. It's a sick and twisted Sparity reference, i.e. a reference to a certain character pairing in MLP (as apparently there's this dragon who's in love with a white unicorn).

Rampant Ruins a robot graveyard? I could probably come up with something interesting for what I think is a backstory for all of skylands with that info.

Actually, I find a LOT of children things, like Disney movies, include jokes and references the kids won't get, a little something for the parents. Wouldn't be difficult to include some deeper back story which will go ignored by the kids of the core audience. With Robin Williams, Aladdin was loaded with jokes for the parents.

Well I STILL don't know who or what "Sparity" is, and I can't think what "MLP" stands for, but this was basically enough to clear things up, thanks! LOL! And I tend to think of Whirlwind as a Pegasus Unicorn, but it's true, she's clearly a dragon.

There was a very deep, disturbing-ness to the Wilikin level, but it's kind of a crime that it was never expanded or even mentioned again in Giants. Hopefully they'll expand on it some more in Swap Force because it's a pretty interesting concept to have in a children's game.

It's not about the physical figures (or any other merchandise), so I would agree, Giants forum.
HOWEVER! I strongly disagree with changing the forum of a thread, at least after it has seen some activity. I had previously ignored the Toys & Merch forum and was forced to start coming here just to keep an eye on a thread which is important to me, just because it was moved here from the Giants forum where I found it.

Lol, yeah, nothing like a more mature reference to My little pony in a kids' game :P Just keep the thread here. We need more Wilikin. Period. Also, Sonic Boom and several others have some surprisingly macabre backstories. Anyway, not to advertise, but I try and make things a bit deeper in my (non-comedy) fanfic guides, so that makes it deeper for me.

Well, it's Giants that gets deeper into the backstory, so that's why I said it would belong more in the Giants forum, LOL! Besides, people seem to mostly want to talk about when figures are coming out, where they can be found, etc., all stuff which arguably belong here, just trying to throw the Giants forum a bone, LOL!

You DO know that now I have to go look up Sonic Boom's back story, right? I blame you. LOL! And I did finally read my first back story, Stealth Elf's, with a whole amnesia thing that seems like a reference to Wolverine, that's mildly dark, forgetting her past...

Sonic Boom's official backstory (courtesy of Spyro wiki):
Long ago, Sonic Boom took refuge high atop a mountain peak in the far reaches of Skylands, hoping to keep her griffin hatchlings safe. But despite her precautions, a devious wizard tracked her down and placed a wicked curse on the griffin eggs. Once hatched, the young hatchlings can live for only mere moments before they magically return to their shells... only to be hatched again in an endless cycle. Wanting to prevent such evil from happening to others, Sonic Boom joined the Skylanders and has trained her young to defend Skylands each time they are hatched.

It's been a while since I read them, but I believe Voodood, Ghoster Roaster and to a lesser extent Whirlwind (due to being shunned by her own kind)
