I was in a shop (tesco) and i had a choice between 2 skylanders
Warnado or Dark spyro i chose warnado, and never saw a single dark spyro again! and im not prepared to pay so much for it now, so im pretty anoyed

Pfft. I WISH I'd have missed a variant. At least that way I could actually verify these things have ever even made it to the floor in Cleveland area stores.

I guess a sort of story is the one with Blue Bash. My closest TRU had like 10 in and were handing out tickets. A woman got out of her car literally a few seconds ahead of me and walked really fast up to the entrance to the woman handing them out. When I got up there she told me that was the last one...so I missed Blue Bash by mere seconds.

Then I went to another one about a half hour away and ended up getting 2 of them. So nyeh.

I've never seen msot of the variants. I've only seen the more common ones. I've missed the Red S1 Drill Seargent and GiTD S2 Sonic Boom, but I only "missed" those because I didn't want them and passed on them willingly. I'm honestly much happier with the Sonic Boom I have as the GiTD looks bleh and unpainted to me.

Only other variant I've seen that I regret not getting was a Legendary Stealth Elf. I love her and passed on her when I had the chance because I knew it wouldn't work on the first game (I don't have Giants yet) and thought I'd get one later. Well, went back later and now they're gone, but oh well. I have a S1 Stealth Elf and a S2 one as well so I'm still happy.

Spyro flame---I feel exactly like you do! I've spent considerable time trying to get a varient from the store--I've never ever even seen one!!!

When I was buying the first game for my son (Dec 2011), I saw a Silver 3-Pack and held it in my hands wondering why someone would want it over a colorful version.

Wait, why wouldn't a series 2 ledgendary not work in SSA? Surely it'd just look like series 1, right?

From what I get, the game regocnizes Legendary as a seperate character, sort of. While it still unlocks the same Heroic challenge as the normal counterpart, it appears different in the game using a different colored sprite. The sprites for Legendary Stealth Elf, Ignitor, and Slam Bam won't exist in the first game so logically even though they are recolors of SSA characters, they are series 2 like any skylander new to Giants.

EDIT: Just googled Legendary Stealth Elf and the little image on the box where it says what games it works with even says it does not work in SSA.

I've missed all except 2 legendaries, and red DS.

I think I saw the rock variants on launch day at the local walmart. Wasn't until researching online I realized that they were special. I still remember the display and having to do a double take on going for the launch due to thinking it was on monday and not sunday. Of course never and still don't have them. I think polar is better for whirlwind though.

I missed Silver Boomer, and I was at a Toys R Us Express in 2011, and It was right on the shelf! I was asking my dad, but he said "NO JUST WAIT FOR CHRISTMAS" and I never saw it again.....

Even though the "legendary" re-posed characters from the Giants series (Stealth Elf, Ignitor, and Slam Bam) have packaging that indicates they do not work with Spryo's Adventure .... they DO actually work with Spyro's Adventure. They just appear in the game as the normal-colored version of those characters. I've tested this at home.

Was asking a Toys R Us employee about the varients, only for him to tell me that he'd never seen a Giants varient, but he used to get tons of SSA varients.

I've literally never seen a variant in stores or I would have immediately bought it.

You have incredible luck to have seen as many "in the wild" variants as you have. I don't stalk the stores at inventory time, nor demand they open the box in front of me...I'm sure that's the problem. Almost every story I get from eBay is that they used one of the aforementioned strategies to snag one.

I'm of the opinion that a variant never hits the shelf.

^exactly what I was thinking. Or an employee who knows the value and flips it for 8 times their hourly pay, and takes a day off after. Sad but probably true.

Instead of, or in addition to them randomly putting them out there for people to scalp, it would be cool it they did some type of contest for kids, fans, and die hard collectors, to win the Super Secret Ultra Rare Very Hard to Find from the Moon Variant. (kidding) but a contest would give hope to those I see posting wishing they could get a rare variant. Especially the children.

They could give a couple hundred away around the world, they could do it quarterly, and I am sure they could afford it.

I think about Charlie when he got his golden ticket, when I hear of people finding a chase variant. Anyway congrats Matteo on finding and coming close to finding rare variants in store.

Missed a Rock Zook and Rock Whirlwind.

Missed on a GitD Warnado, Wrecking Ball, and Zap last year. Also Glitter Hot Head.

I ALMOST missed a GITD Warnado... Almost

It almost seems like Activision didn't make as many variants this year. Which makes me one sad puppy. I still NEED (yes, NEED) a clear stealth elf to finish my clear variants from S:SA.

Just to add my own two cents as per Legendaries and SSA, I bought Legendary Stealth Elf and the first thing I did was to bring her into my SSA and do all the Heroic Challenges I have unlocked there.

So I can assure you from considerable first hand experience that LStealth Elf does indeed work in SSA just fine. My read is that they mark it as "Doesn't Work" because it won't show up looking like the figure, like it does in Giants. Seems like a nitpicky reason to mark it as Doesn't Work, but that seems to be what they did.

This also works with Royal Double Trouble and Polar Whirlwind, any varient of a previous SSA character will work in SSA and will just look (and have the stats of) its normal version- great to get that extra +25 Crit

Good to hear. Now I don't hvae to pass on Polar for the same reason.

Speaking of which, does anyone know if/where Polar Whirlwind will be exclusive to?

Oh, and another vairant I "missed" was Molten Hot Dog. Like with the red Drill Seargent and GiTD Sonic Boom, I just didn't want it. IMO he looks better in red than yellow.

I missed out on the series 2s a ton, if they count as variants. Why did I strive collect Lightcores and not the characters that are EASIER to get!

The most frustrating part of my entire skylander collecting experience. I have never seen a variant. Ever. Not a silver, not a gold, not a glitter, not a clear. The only exception is the easy ones (blue bash, red drilly, GITD sonic boom). I've got those. I want a real variant. I look at every display in every store I go to, some times three times a week since SSA launched. My husband gets so frustrated, knowing that we have every figure that is out, that I still have to scan every peg in every store. I just want to find one... and I refuse to ever pay more than retail for it. Call me unrealistic, but at this point I think I deserve one, **** it.

Unless they actually look different in-game, I've forbidden myself to buy variants. My collection is huge as it is. :D If I could find things like crystal Stealth Elf for a reasonable price (i.e. $10 or less) I'd get them, but otherwise, I can live without them. Now legendaries and things like Scarlet Ninjini are a different matter... :D

I agree with this. I've passed up on GiTD Sonic Boom so many times simply because she looks the same in-game and while GiTD is cool, it looks unpainted and meh to me. If I were to see one of the glitters/rocks/flocked/whatever in store though, I'd pick it up because it's a rare find (and possibly resell it on eBay).

Otherwise I just go for a variant if it looks cool to me. I passed up Molten because Hot Dog looks weird in yellow IMO, at least the figure does.

Latest variant I "missed" was Legendary Bouncer. Saw quite a few a couple days ago and actually don't see him often, but really the only giant I want is Ninjini (preferably Scarlet).
