So, let's hear it from the guys that buy MULTIPLES of each skylander...you rationalize it for many reasons (resale for a later date, for yourself, for display etc)...I want to see if we have any hoarders. Nothing wrong with it, just want to see if anyone is doing it and/or their rationale.

Personally, I open up a set for myself and my son, and I keep 2 or 3 of each extra. When there are huge sales like the recent TRU I literally doubled my SSA collection from one extra to two of each (of the ones I found).

I wouldn't call it hoarding, that's kinda insulting.

As many might know, I bought 5 of each figure from the first game. 2 to open for me and level down path A and B, one to hang on my wall, one for my son and one for my oldest daughter.

With Giants, I moved to 4 of each character, except Giants, which I buy 5 of each. 2 to open for path A and B, one to hang on my wall, 1 for my kids to share. The 5 giants are 3 for me, 1 for my oldest kids to share, 1 for my youngest daughter to play with.

I never bought into Skylanders for monetary gain in the long run, because I don't think they will be worth much later on. I buy them because it diversifies my game collection, and it's unique.

Yeah, I couldn't come up with another term. Feel free to call it "skylander obsession". Picture is worth a lot of words. Seeing it pile up makes me think.

Let's face it guys--if we buy them, we'll eventually sell them. For now though, I'm really digging the toy aspect of it--keep in mind I NEVER collected toys earlier in life, so this is all kinda new to me.

I really want to get the original 32 but as many of you probably know I started with Giants. I got a few thru eBay for cheap and bought others in the store but after like 10 I sold them for more than I paid for them and used that money to get the remaining 3 sidekicks I didn't have. (Spend $30 get free sidekick @ GameStop) Feels weird to have some magic items and some unreposed in green and have everything else in orange. I might get the whole collection later on, or I might not. I'm older enough that my parents don't buy me toys by not old enough to get a job yet. So I'm kinda low on money between this and lego/megabloks (halo + skylanders)/mcfarlane halo action figures ( I'm just getting into it.)

So where is the line drawn? If I bought multiples of a certain comic book during its original run and 20 years later sold a few for a huge profit is that scalping? Or baseball cards? Or Hot Wheels? Or <insert random collectible here>?

Buying multiples to keep them for whatever reason

Buying multiples to sell for whatever reason

one is okay with people the other is frowned upon, even though they pretty much do the same thing in the end of the day.........

I have no problem with either thing I am just saying how is this acceptable if buying to sell them isn't?

I'm boring and lazy. I open all my packaging and I only buy one unless it's a really good deal.
I'm hoping to get a nice display case to show off my other collections (Pokemon figures and Schleich) and I'll probably end up getting a larger one to display our Skylanders collections.

And eep! You have a lot! D:
Jealous. I'm such a newbie to all of this.

I won't eventually sell them. I can build a career and make more money than ANY game or game accessory will ever be worth. My game collection will go to two places after I croak.

1: To my kids to keep passing on.

2: Donated to a museum for history purposes.

I plan on taking everything Skylanders related off of my walls and taking a group pic (will probably take up my whole kitchen) once I get everything Giants related.

Hehe...most excellent eye. I used to have a complete 9.8 collection of Walking Dead....I have other assortment of bronze age comics.

My multiples serve multiple purposes. One goal was for me to leave a set to my son as a recognition of some of the good times we've had on the game as he was growing up, and to introduce him into collectables in general. As to the others---if I want to light a match to them, sell them, or have a demonic seance with my Double Trouble that's my deal.

I was more interested to hear about folks that are buying multiples for fun and the hobby/collecting aspect of it. Interesting that some are taking this thread in quite the opposite context of my intent.

I think he wanted to admire what comics you had stashed away in your comic boxes and not what you had property wise. I don't think he was trying to pry into your stuff. I think he wanted to go holy crap this guy has comic so and so and thats awesome.

I joined the fun Dec 26th of last yr. I got 3 packs of everything in SSA ( plus whamshell)sealed plus extras of the missing 8 in singles, minus boomer as I joined to late to find singles him. I did buy a rarely used boomer from a friend to use for play. I thought about going for the singles too of SEA but I think for me having more then 1 set sealed is pointless. I did think of getting a set for opening of SSA but this late in the game I'm good with orange base ones. For giants my son, wife and I each have an open set and I have a 2nd sealed set. I have some extras of guys I like. For example I have 2 sealed ninjini one from NYC release ( which I kept for sentimental value) and the first I found in a store. I opened the 3rd I got. Have extra sealed of each variant etc. I think for swap force I may do different things as paying for blazingly 4 sets gets expensive thou I have been lucky with giants to get everything on sale, like target deals, bj"s $5 singles and jcpenny having $4 singles and 6 giants back in Jan.

You hit the nail on this one. It tends to get more dangerous to lollygag to get your skylanders later, but it also pays off. With the TRU $5 sale someone could literally have gotten about 65% of your collection for half off. I think on the next round I'll get one to play and one to keep and then stockpile on during sale events only.

See, the way I see it, we're all stewards of the things we love. I've spent non-trivial amounts on my comics...when I need the money, someone who loves what I have will pay me and they will get to enjoy it. I'd like to think heirs will keep it, but my wife has told me, they will get sold ... so, all of this bold talk about not selling STUFF is just silly. It will be sold...maybe not by you, but by someone, sometime.

The main difference is that as collectors we are enjoying what we have and then "passing it on" as long term traders. Scalpers in my eyes are those that would be equivalent to short term traders...and both have a place in any collectable economy.

I'm organizing them and taking inventory--they've been in shipping boxes. Short term I'm packing them so they're out of my man cave. I have grand visions on how to geek out and show em off, but I'm a ways off. My son's Ikea glass case with the lights do look awesome though. We've filled up one case with just two games.

Btw, you've probably only seen half of it. This is just what I had out to prove a point.

Holy smokes, GhostRoaster!!

I thought my hoarding of Skylanders was bad ... apparently I'm just a guppy though!

Thank you for posting the pic in the OP, for two reasons: 1. it's pretty impressive, and, 2. if my wife bugs me about the trove of Skylanders I have, I'll just show her your collection and she'll instantly think, "oh ... I guess it could be much worse!"

Funny thing is, there's always someone worse/better...and I guarantee I'm Mickey Mouse on this. I'd love to see the world's most serious skylanders freak so I can feel better lol.

Btw, I'm still low in the Adventure Packs department... and still only one Boomer and Zap in a single pack in all of this. I'm guessing once they re-issue Boomer in SF I'll be able to get them cheaper.

Anyone seen the show "Collection Intervention"? smilie

Yeah, it started with core figures only, then the store exclusive variants and then in game variants, and now hard to find exclusive chase variants. I'll have them all before it's done. I started with one of the more expensive ones (Pearl Hex) to get out of the way first. I already have two Blue Chop Chops and two White Flocked Eruptors lol so the duplicity of effort spans over into variants too.

Well, as far as sealed goes I have a shelf with Granite Crusher, Ninjini, 2 GITD Sonic Boom, 2 LC Shroomboom, Wham Shell, Molten Hot Dog, 2 Jade. Flashwing, sealed set of sidekicks, Amazon Flameslinger, L-LC Chill, GITD Warnado 3-pack and then loose GITD Cynder.

A couple of those are my girlfriends and she has a small loose collection. As for loose figures, me and my nephew have a ton. The only character we don't have is Dino Rang. Between our collections, we have one of every SSA character, whether its S1 or S2. As for Giants, just counting characters themselves not including the different figures, we need Swarm.

So we have every character in one form or another except Swarm and Dino Rang. But thats between our collections, I have some my nephew wants, and he has some I want it. I wish I could find some Camo, Warnado, and Dino Rang single packs.

Buying for three people is expensive... smilie

Government calls long term trading anything you hold one year or more. I'm fine for that definition here. The market for these things change minute by minute. I think those that disapprove sellers that take something and immediately sell it for a markup is my personal definition of scalping.

Btw, I'm selling some Dino Rangs because the packages got damaged in shipping and I don't like them damaged---so is that scalping? I'm selling them at my cost plus the PayPal fee. There's some wiggle room here.

Our houses are comparable.

Mine is littered in my "man cave/office" but I'm actually going to be buying boxes to stack and store for now. I'll eventually have a nice display location set up for one set of boxed material when my office becomes more of an entertainment room. With our living room TV we have an Ikea Detolf soon to have lights and just one of them is stacked between the two games; we're going to need another one if we do Swap Force.

I'll show the stack of boxes for a "4 of everything" configuration, but I think you'll be amazed at how little space it will take up.
