Found by Sunburn55, OneofSwords got a look at the old Skylander prototypes that turned into some of the Skylanders you know, and the original concept of Spyro's Kingdom.

Haldor was the original Double Trouble.

Cyclops Snail soon turned into Zap during production.

Spyro was originally red and called Fire Dragon. While His Purple Majesty was originally going to be a benevolent and regal NPC, “it was felt that we couldn’t have a game called Spyro’s Kingdom without Spyro as a playable character, so Fire Dragon became Spyro.”

Spyro was also going to be King in the early version of Spyro's Kingdom too and the one giving you quests.

Wow they are the beta skylanders they look awesome I'm looking forward too the future of giants maybe these could be finally realeased !

No, sonsil, those Skylanders are scrapped, they won't be in any future games.

they could be referenced or somehow be tributed, they could slither their way into being a skylander, they just scrapped it for the game, not like the whole franchise :I anything could happen, they obviously probably not going to be exactly the same since they revealed it.

You forget that some of the scrapped characters are turned into NPCs, rather than going to be future 'Skylanders'.

Haldor was the original Double Trouble, but he got turned into a NPC instead.

Vathek was planned to be the Undead Skylander of Spyro's Adventure, but Cynder was already chosen, and Vathek was turned into an NPC instead and the villain of Dragon's Peak.

Sun Dragon is the old design of Camo. The only reason he appeared in The Beginning was because his design change to his Camo's look was done late, and Sun Dragon was left in the trailer as a result.

I'm really happy that they kept Spyro purple in the final version...

double troubles original is in a level and also all the characters like flynn and hugo basically npcs are being realeased as figures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ive seen pics of the sidekicks and hugo and even luvshanks! *spoilers* kaos is also one of them

^Those figures you saw are only toy concepts for the characters' figure development, sonsil. They're not making playable figures for the NPCs. And the Kaos toy figure was only made for fun by Toys for Bob, they're not releasing figures of him.

Please do your research and read the full details, instead of jumping to conclusions based on the pictures you see and screaming all over the place.

Hi all. I created that article. For those of you suggesting that these prototype figures will one day be made: They will not. I specifically asked Michael Graham if these characters had any chance of reappearing at some point in the future, or if they had simply served their function as a step in development. He said it was the latter, and that for Giants, the dev team sat down with a whole new fresh crop of character ideas. They move forward.

So please don't start any false rumors, and please don't assume that because you want it to happen that it has a chance of happening. That article was just intended to show you some of the amazing creative effort that went into making Skylanders, and to be completely honest, "Will people think that these are still going to get made" was a question that almost killed the article altogether -- many companies don't show you behind the development curtain for that very reason, and I had to make my case. I said we could give the audience credit for understanding that what they see, when clearly labeled as an abandoned prototype, was not going to be confused with a retail figure.

So don't prove me wrong. I was very proud of that article and I would love to be able to do others like it again in the future -- but I won't be able to if people start making stuff up and citing my article as if it's "proof" when it absolutely is not.
