There are A LOT of minor to major connections between the original Spryo series, and Skylanders. I cannot think of them all at this moment, but I'll list the ones I can think of.

-That tree guy, Arbor? Anyways, he reminds me of the Idols in Idol Springs of Spyro 2.
-Auric? Yeah, him. He reminds me of Moneybags.
-And that mole man? I forget his name. He's like the Manweresmalls in Spyro a New Beginning.
-Persephone? She's like a more functional Zoe.
-Those butterflies??? Yeah, I belive they were a reference to the original series where butterflies were health.
-Those giant turtles? Anyone remember that one spyro 3 level where you had to push the turtles onto the buttons? Sunny Beach, yeah.
-That giant fish that eats you? Levatian? Think of him as a scarier version of that whale in Spyro 3 that you get an egg from.
-Cali and Flynn? They remind me a bit of Hunter and Bianca.
-T-Bone? Doesn't he remind you of the dancing skeleton in Spyro 2 in Skelos Badlands?
-Treetop Terrace? Could that be a refferance to Tree Tops from the first Spyro game?
-The Mabu dudes? Don't they remind you of the pandas from Spyro 3's Bamboo Terrace?
-And the entire Skylands is a bunch of floating islands... Dawn of the Dragon's Floating Islands referance?
-And all those fire levels... Could they be in referance to the lava level in Spyro a New Beginning AND the Burned Lands in Dawn of the Dragon?
-Spyro is the only non-fire Skylander that uses fire to attack... That I know of... Hmm.....
-Those Gillman? Think of the seals from Spyro 3, maybe?
-And Kaos?? That short, grumpy guy? What about Ripto, who's also a short grumpy guy? And they're both ugly...
-And The Darkness? Didn't The Eternal Night say something about the land being enveloped in eternal darkness or something?
-The levels where you had to shoot at the ships? Cannon referance from Spyro 3?
-And those jump pads? Could they be referance to the Whirlwinds in all three original games that let you up to places you normally couldn't reach otherwise?

That's all I can think of right now. But there's more. And yes, I came up with all these on my own, some of them I thought of right now as I typed these down.
So, what did I miss? Feel free to suggest what you think might be a referance to the original Spyro series in Skylanders.
And Skylander's haters, please, just go away, this is for us who like Skylanders and Spyro in all his forms, thank you.

Pretty much every single game has at least one "Fire" level. Heck, there's been ones in all Mario games if I'm not mistaken. Spyro has ALWAYS been able to shoot fire (and do his head charge thing), so really it'd be weird to give him any other kind of ability.

I don't see how fish people could be related to the seals. They're not really a reference to anything except the fact that fish-esque creatures have never really been in any Spyro games (They had seahorse people in Aquaria Towers in Riptos Rage and mermaids in Enter the Dragonfly)

Jump Pads have also been a staple of games since forever. Not just the Spyro series either.
