^ I plan to get Giants on release day as well. And all the figures that may be out along with it. I'm not gonna wait like I did with this game. Though fortunately enough I got into Skylanders when all those delicious "Black Friday" sales were going on so Activision got plenty of my money on that day.

activision is a publisher, all they do is print discs, do some advertisement, and pay game dev studios miserable sums of money, and also disband studios not making enough money or not making enough call of duty angry birds waggle clones. EA does this constantly, activison does as well. With the advent of digital distribution, as well as indie funding systems like Kickstarter, publishers have become obsolete, so they're now ruining the industry with cheap money grab tactics. activison really needs to go under so we can get on with our lives. |

Knock that "real Spyro game" nonsense off. No need to be a purist just because you don't like the latest Spyro incarnation. You don't see me going "Oh, Legend of Spyro aren't real Spyro games because blah blah blah". If you don't like it, fine. But whether your like it or not, it's a real Spyro game, it's Spyro. Different design and different gameplay, but so was LoS.

Honestly? If all Skylanders were in stock everywhere whenever anyone wanted them, they'd sell less than they have by keeping certain ones in limited supply. If you don't have Wham-Shell and you saw him in the store today, you'd probably buy him without thinking twice. If he could be found anywhere, you'd bide your time and pick him up when you felt like it, and if you weren't determined to "catch 'em all" you might decide not to bother if you found his playing style didn't match your interests. "Shortages" are often planned and deliberate. They've still got at least five months to go until the next game, and have to try to stretch out interest during that time period. It's a game, and they've played it rather well. |

How much does that number increase if you include the secondary market? When an $8 toy gets sold for $50 to $300, it would increase that number pretty quickly.

I'm not too sure about that. From what I've gathered on this forum, there were plenty 'landers during the beginning months because it was not a Hot Item yet, then after Christmas it became THE Hottest Item and that's really when the shortages became a thing. However, Quote: Himewad
I see your point but the figure was actually bought in a store (hopefully) so Activision got 8$ of that 50$ or 300$ business. |

The actual impact of Skylanders on the gaming industry is still a little ways away and will forever change how we interact with video games and in-between consoles. We already know Nintendo is considering a similar technology with Wii-U and there is heavy rumors that Activision is planning something similar and soon with the Call of Duty franchise ... not to produce a "toy" catalog, but to create a way to bring your CoD "Character" to any gaming platform be it Microsoft, PS3, PC, or Wii-U and maintain all unlocks.
Honestly, THAT will be Skylanders legacy in 10 years and the gaming industry will be a better place. And the Haters will still keep hating .... |

It's true. People hated the Wii when it first came out. They still do. I'm one of them. But I can't deny that every major platform now has a motion control, and gaming in general has undergone a permanent change to be more inclusive to the casual buyer, both because of the Wii's influence. It might be the worst console on the market, but it was tremendously influential. I hate to acknowledge that, but hey, I've got one sitting next to my other consoles, so it must've been worth purchasing in some capacity. Skylanders will have the same type of influence, whether people like it or not. It may not be everyone's favorite product; in fact, many people actively and avidly hate it, but gaming is undergoing a fundamental change that has yet to even come close to being fully realized as a result. Give it a few years, and Skylanders will be spoken of with the same reverence as other game-changing games. |

To clarify, the Wii U has NFC but that NFC functionality is not necessarily (and almost certainly not) compatible with SL RFID.
NFC will become a big(ger) thing in *all* devices. Prototype Samsung Windows 8 tablets already have it to detect applicable phones and smart devices.

I know that. I'm just wondering how high the number would jump if we DID include the secondary market. And technically, even retail is a secondary sale, because Activision sells it wholesale to the retail stores first.

We will learn a lot more in a couple of weeks as E3 kicks off. Regardless of what and how implementation is shown, the success of Skylanders has both validated and accelerated the technology concept. This, in turn, has given the industry (console makers and developers/publishers) the needed risk-removal of the up-front investment. From here out, we will likely see a double-down on development resources and monies to be "quick-followers" of the model as clearly demonstrated in the Wii-U video. Please understand that I am NOT saying Nintendo hadn't thought of this prior to Skylanders. I am simply saying that (like many others) development resources, dollars, and marketing budgets were likely shifted to the concept because they know it has a financial and consumer return-on-investment. Lastly, I for one am happy to see Activision make a cash-cow of money from Skylanders. They took the new-t-market risk and, deservedly, are reaping the reward ... which happens far to infrequently now a days in business. |

This is exactly the kind of pop culture and financial footprint the series needed to leave to have those boxed figures be worth anything in ten years. Very encouraging for collectors.

Still amazed by the fact they got sme many. Actually I take that back. However, products are on a go way down from I see. I went to TRU and they were filled with stuff. Mostly eruptor, hex, boomer, and wrecking ball along with the legendary three pack, darklight crypt, legendary trig and the ch chop three pack.
I can also CONFIRM that there will be Giants info at E3 thanks to Alex ness who is currently very busy on giants. |
