Skylanders Repaint [CLOSED]

So I found myself with 3 Stealth Elfs and 3 Cynders. I'm only collecting 2 of each for the tree progression. I tried looking around for a reliable trading place but I couldn't find any. Looking for my second Ignitor and Gill Grunt.

So I decided to repaint these. This is not anything I'm new at, I must have repainted 10 or so of my girlfriends Littleest petshops for her. I also paint all the miniatures for my boardgames.

I have 2 questions though and I'll post some pics when they are done.

1. Any ideas how to remove the paint from the figure and not the base. I couldn't do this with the Littlest petshop toys it just faded them or ruined the plastic.

2. Any ideas for Color Schemes, something in particular anyone would like to see? Looking for some ideas for Stealth Elf and Cynder!

I have a few suggestions.

Acetone will remove paint from them. (consider trying nail polish remover with a cotton swap.

You can try trading them on here, or offer to sell them. Or you can ebay them. There may be a niche market for them. My other suggestion would be to tape off the base with painter tape and then just spray them with a light weight primer and repaint them from scratch. They make a lot of sandable primers, and regular primers that catalyze without sanding. I suggest using the finest brushes to do the detail work with hobby paints. And if you have an airbrush, do them with that. I am fortunate that I work in a model shop, so I have access to a paint booth and all the equipment.

As for color schemes for Stealth elf, I think repainting her with bright green hair, silver daggers, and black robes and no midriff exposed as well as arms. Make her almost ninja looking. Also I would put silver bands on her arms and maybe silver in her hair. Her skin tone could stay the same, or maybe go pure white or maybe even light purple...lilac color.

For Cynder...I'd like to see her in electric blue, with orange accents, or gradient shaded horns, silver to black. and the wings could have that orange accent in them too. You're making me want to paint mine...lol

I do have an extra Cynder...maybe i should paint her this week.

Hope this helped. I'll do a test on one when I get to work tomorrow and let you know what chemical removes the paint the best. I have a wide variety to choose from at work.

How about a Dark purple or black Cynder with yellow/red eyes or keep her eyes blue so it's similar to the Cynder in Dawn of the Dragons?

^ That sounds cool, and maybe glow in the dark paint on the sclera of the eyes (the white area of the eye).

What paint do you suggest to use? I want to repaint or redesign a Drobot and do not know what paint to use. I kinda want to try it first with different colored sharpies but I dunno

Awesome thanks for the tips! My painting skills are hobby at best and I don't have access to an airbrush. I've seen some stunning stuff done with that.

Let me know if you do decide to paint yours so I don't steal your color scheme!

I think I am gonna do my cynder in black and purple with fine accents. So feel free to use any suggestions I made. I have to find time to actually do it. Life kinda has me booked up of late...But my inner artist has been dormant for awhile.

the person who wrote these guides customizes and paints a lot of figures. you may find them useful ...

http://www.jinsaotomesdangeroustoys.com/guides.html

this is a previous post of John's with some tips ...

If anyone is going to get into painting these figures there's some important steps/info they'll need before they start. Basic figure painting can be found here in my guide and I have ones on all the techniques you'll be using for them. http://www.angelfire.com/mech/...intingTips.html

However to summarize:

1. NEVER use enamel paint. It will remain tacky and slowly dissolve soft PVC plastic that the figures are made of releasing toxic fumes over time. This is probably the #1 cause of failed projects. Also avoid paint pens that say enamel or contain tolulene/xyelene/acetone.

2. Acrylic paint from Micheal's/Walmart like Folk Art and Apple Barrel don't stick well to plastic and need primer first. But primer is very hard to find that isn't some sort of enamel and will make a figure sticky to begin with. I use testors Model Master acrylics you can find at Hobby Lobby and Formula P3. Games Workshop paints will rub off unless you paint them over a basecoat of testors or Formual P3. Tamiya Spray Lacquer [For Plastics] is the only kind of spraypaint I've found that doesn't make the figures sticky.

3. Prep your figure by carefully washing it in warm soapy water. Try not to submerge the base and just wash the figure off under the faucet using a soft nail brush and non-moisturizing soap. You can also wipe it down with rubbing alcohol. This prep step removed the silicon oil, mold release, and hand oils that will keep your paint from sticking.

4. Sealing the figure requires either Tamiya clear spray lacquer or a brush-on acrylic sealer. Don't use modge-podge stuff tho, you'll need Games Workshop 'Ardcoat, Testors clear gloss, or a hobby brand. Krylon makes an 'acrylic' spray sealer called Crystal Clear but I haven't used it on these figures yet. It won't make Marvel Legends pvc plastic sticky so it may work. It comes in matte, semigloss, and gloss.

5. You normally don't need to remove the paint that there but in the event of really glossy metallic paint that repels other paint you have two options. Soak the figure upside down in 91% alcohol for a day making sure not to get the base wet. This sometimes softens the factory paint or removes it without harming the figure. CAREFULLY wipe the section down using acetone on a pure white paper towel. You can't let it sit on the figure because Acetone eats away at plastic, tho much slower on PVC. It will eat the hard plastic ABS base quickly. You can also take 3M 800 grit sandpaper and rough up the surface to allow the paint to stick.

hope these tips help!

I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually see blank figures ready to be custom painted.

Whatever you do...do NOT do this to your skylanders. Ebay has some decent repaints on there, but I'd rather paint my own.

I don't know what's funnier - the fact that someone painted a creepy rainbow girlie Spyro, or the fact that they believe they can get $40 for it.

Removing the paint from the figure is unecessary. The paint from the factory isn't very thick and you can easily paint over it and still get the ridges and details of the figure.

I'm getting an extra Cynder (it's in the mail from TRU in the 3 pack) and I plan to repaint it. I think i'm going to go for the LoS color scheme of dark purplish. (I mean that's where she's from originally anyway!) [User Posted Image]

Or I might go for all black and leave her silver accents

^ Whoa! Did anyone notice that it was somehow sold and at $41.00!?

Anyway back on topic, Storm, did you find out how to remove the paint from the figure and not the base? I'm stuck with that issue too with my figure.

I like Spyro better that way. Reminds me of that poptart cat thing!

I happen to like most all of the repaints (that I have seen on ebay - and not single coloured ones but ACTUAL reimaginings of the entire colour scheme) over the originals smilie;; I just really don't find the colours or paint jobs of most the Skylanders appealing. At ALL. Maybe cause I'm artsy fartsy and they're so......plain?, I dunno.

I actually just paint the base with painters tape with most guys, some guys like Wham Shell, my cousin removed wham shell from the base. Once the base is protected just primer up the figure, otherwise the paint won't stick. smilie
