Look at this leaked trailer for Rayman Legends on Wii U, which was supposed to be shown at E3.
http://wii.ign.com/articles/122/1223893p1.html
Someone puts a heart on the Wii U tablet controller and it reads it and puts it ingame. Same for a Rabbid toy. The trailer cuts off as a player is about to put Ezio on there.
Graphics look epic.

Not surprising in the least. Id hope if more companies do decide to feature similar things in their games, they 1) make them high quality and 2)make them on the cheap.
With the exception of recent waves, a lot of the Skylanders figures are well made, and they're right around that spot where its to too much, and not too cheap they won't make money. If they charge like $20 for a figure, and its junky, no one will want it. Pretty cool though. Makes me hope that Smash Bros-U will have something similar for extra characters.

The graphics on the Wii U look pimp so far.
I really wish TFB would make Skylanders better looking on the HD consoles. I'm hoping once the Wii U comes out, they drop the Wii version of future sequels, so they can finally work on a new graphics engine. Heck, I hope a Wii U and Vita version of Skylanders (which could play like the home console versions) comes out this year.

You guys seem to be missing the point that this was not intended to be an actual trailer, but was more meant to demonstrate what the Wii U could do. The video is purely a "proof-of-concept", and although it's pretty much confirmed that a sequel to Rayman Origins is in the works, the whole toy thing is probably just a demonstration of the Wii Us capabilities.

They should do something like Skylanders with Super Hero Squad. With the tiny characters they've come up with, it's almost like they were MEANT for something like this.
Imagine... if the kids went this crazy over random new characters in Skylanders... think about what it would be like trying to collect their favourite super heroes! |

Honestly? I don't think it'd do as well, because they're going in reverse order. For Skylanders, it's new and different, and the only way you've ever been able to "catch 'em all" is by buying the figures. (Or getting enough money in the iOS game to buy them, but that's not really the same.) With Pokémon, they'd be taking something that used to be freely available and suddenly forcing you to make a purchase to acquire the same thing. It'd be like making a new "Marvel VS Capcom" fighting game and only making half the characters playable by default, adding the other characters to the game by scanning in figures you could buy. Nobody's going to want to buy a Ryu figure just to make him playable for the umpteenth time, and unless that Pikachu figure brings exclusive content to the game, getting him into the game that way just wouldn't have the same thrill. |

^ This. That isn't to say they won't try the idea anyway, especially considering Nintendo's recent 500-someodd $million losses, but another attempt at doing Skylanders with the Pokemon franchise would be viewed as both a ripoff and a cash grab. I'd imagine most players would elect to stick with their standard Pokemon when faced with the reality of the world's first $1,500 game.

Pokemon had something kinda similar to it. Well, almost really. It was a Collectable Figure Trading game. You could buy different characters and use them in a tabletop sort of battle. It didn't do very well, so it was scrapped. Shame too, because the molds of the characters were absolutely beautiful.
I think a series where this WOULD work well is Smash Bros, like I talked about in my first post. It'd be a great way to unlock bonus characters, and could even be a way to get old characters back in the game. Seriously, gimme back my Mewtwo, Nintendo. Zelda series might be a good one too. It could be a way to get extra items, special abilities, etc. Pokemon honestly could if it was going to have a Wii-U adaption in which you could get special Pokemon (similar to download events). That would be seriously awesome. On the 3DS, I think they aught to just stick with the AR Cards..that works just fine for things like bonus content.

Rayman > Spyro anyday! *long term Rayman fan* I love the Ubiart framework. I plan to use it for some of my games once it is released publicly. 2D animation is really my "thing" and my team's environments art look extremely much like the art of the new Rayman series of games. Totally! Though this was just WIP after about 30 minutes or so of him drawing. But anyhow, I'm excited for this, totally! New Rayman games ftw! <3 |

Pokemon would actually work very well. I dont know if you guys have heard of the japanese arcade game Pokemon Battrio. It uses discs a little smaller than an air hockey puck and you put them on the machine and it scans them into game to battle with. Actually now that I think about it Battrio is really closely related to Skylanders. Battrio also saves your progress but with a memory key. http://www.serebii.net/battrio/

Just to clarify: the WiiU had the same RFID capabilities as Skylanders from the start. This is just the first time we are seeing a game which is definitely going to utilize that feature.

...Do you know how patient works? a. NFC technology is already used in the real world, Activision didn't invent it - ever heard of oyster cards? b. If Activision had invented it, but hadn't placed a patient the moment they created it and someone else used the same technology then there's nothing they can do about it, they couldn't sue someone for copying them if they didn't prove they invented it. That second one is hypothetical of course, considering they didn't invent the technology. |

Skylanders as a game hasn't been copied, just the concept. Naturally this was bound to happen, when something like this is successful there's bound to be others to follow suit and want to cash in.

Actually, truth be told, patents can be quite specific and even quite silly.
There is a patent for swinging a person on a swing in a specific way. They may have had a window of opportunity to patent the use of no touch technology for import of game play variables into a home console game (or words to that effect).

As mentioned above, RFID technology (which is used in Skylanders) has been around for a long time. Skylanders was the first well-publicised use of it for entertainment, but Nintendo and many other companies were using it before then.

Ordinarily I don't approve of copying ideas for other products, but this is an exception for me. I think that gaming with the added element of tangible real world items is a concept that's time has finally come.
I'm all for it for whatever games want to use this sort of tech.

I totally agree. physical DLC > digital DLC. You pay for a mere liscense that allows the companies to control how you use what you paid for. I was hesitant to download Trial Evolution, because despite loving the game, I don't really own it. I own a liscense that can be a hassle to get back, should I lose my 360. I was hoping for another compilation disc for the 360, that had Trials Evolution on it, just like they did with LIMBO/Trials HD/Splosion Man.

I heard a rumor that if Sega survives to 2014 they might do physical DLC too. Like a Knuckles figure can unlock him in a game. Activision might want to make sure that their product stays more fun and original if all these people are going to copy it.
