Skylanders Fan Art Contest [CLOSED]

I don't remember seeing a topic for this, so that's why I'm posting it here.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not artistic, nor have I bought anything from ToyWiz in a looooong time, but in case there are any artists here, ToyWiz is having a Skylanders Fan Art Contest (official rules are on their site).

Quote: ToyWiz
For this contest you will create, draw and name your own original Skylander character! You will need to upload your creation through Facebook by clicking here OR email your entry to bebs@toywiz.com

First Prize is $100 in ToyWiz merchandise credit.
Second Place will receive $50 in credit.
Third Place wins $25 to spend in our shop!

Entries will be accepted up until midnight May 15, 2012.
After that, we will allow voting for winners for 1 week, at which time the winners will be notified by email to claim their prizes.

I dunno, judging from the regular prices of most things on that site, there can't be too many people who regularly look through their Skylanders section to enter their contest. Who knows, for those of you who have the artistic skills, it might be a good opportunity to get enough to buy a figure or maybe two.

Hi! I'm glad you saw our contest and I hope it's okay for me to post here. If not, please let me know - I don't mean to cause any problems.

We actually have two contests going right now for Skylanders. The one here is for creating your own Skylander, and the other just requires filling out an entry form for a chance to win a Dragon's Peak set!

To enter the drawing contest: http://a.pgtb.me/cKBh
And to just enter for the Dragon's Peak set: http://a.pgtb.me/cFVj

Good luck to those who enter!

Meh.

ToyWizs scalping like prices are unacceptable to me from a RETAILER.

I doubt I'll be entering either contest much less give them any business and tell them, "Its okay you charge this much for these toys".

A business is a business and its there to make money sure. However ToyWiz generally rides the trend wave and attempts to make a quick buck when it can. We get enough scalpers doing that already, from a company that's just disgusting.

How cool would it be if Toys R Us sent you an email saying they got Wham-Shell in stock and went there to find out they price gouged to $100 from the suggested retail price of $7.99. (they already charge $10!).

"First Prize is $100 in ToyWiz merchandise credit."

Ah Cool man that's not enough to buy a Camo and Warnado! Voodood is priced $65!

Those prices for some of that stuff. Especially the Loose figures which you can buy now in stores for almost half the price. I don't think even the $100 credit would go very far...

Ooooooooooooooooooooh yeah! I've been waiting for something like this to come along. I really love drawing, and am pretty good at it. I couuldn't care less what the prize of the contest is (it could be a jar of peanut butter for all I care), I just like showing of my artistic skills.

@ - ToyWizBebs
Is there a limit of entries each contestant can have(for the drawing contest), or can you enter as many drawings as you want?

Wow, I never saw so much negativity on a free contest!

First, in answer to the question above, we ask for one entry from each, but we will accept multiples. And there's no fee or purchase to enter - one is for a drawing contest, the other is just an enter-and-win thing. We won't even email you unless you are the winner of the drawing unless you want our newsletter, but that has nothing to do with winning the contest.

As for being scalpers, we're just small retailers. We order from a distributor, so we're not the reason your Walmarts and Targets and so on don't have rare items for you. I myself don't have anything to do with pricing, and the crew here seems a bit hostile so I don't see much point in explaining that further. I just saw the post about our contest and thought I'd invite anyone else interested to join both of the giveaways. You are all welcome to enter or not at your pleasure - it's just something fun that's there for anyone who wants to participate.

Best of luck to those who do!

^I think members on this forum are just tired of scalpers and high priced Skylanders!
I think it is great that you guys are putting on a contest!
People should not be mad at stores like yours or e-bay sellers....they should direct their negativity towards Activision and Toys for Bob for not having enough stock! (just my opinion)

I have ordered from Toywiz in the past and have had very positive experiences!!!!
This is a free contest too....so why not enter?

Bebs, a retail shop should be charging retail prices for these items. Let's check out your prices, and we can all determine for ourselves whether or not you are a legitimate operation:

  • Lightning Rod ... $42.99
  • Zook ... $39.99
  • Ignitor ... $38.99
  • Voodood ... $64.99
  • Prism Break ... $59.99
  • Warnado pre-order ... $54.99
  • Camo pre-order ... $54.99
  • Blue Bash ... $54.99
  • All other singles ... $14.99 to $21.99

Based on that evidence, I would say you are an eBay lister that happens to have their own web site. You guys may have a retail license, but you can't justify those prices while calling yourself a retail store. I don't blame you personally for the prices, but someone there is responsible for this price gouging. Go ahead and report this to your "hostile" crew. I can't wait to see what their response is.

So sayeth the Wad.

Frankly, guys, I don't think any of you have a right to tell Bebs or any other business owner how to run their store. And this is a prime example of why we can't have nice things; this is a fun, free contest and most of you are just complaining about something that is completely unrelated. Take your entitlement issues elsewhere, please.

This is a joke right? I have a friend that always goes to the Toys R Us store right near you guys and countless time's he has said how he's seen people from Toywiz in there grabbing up items like WWE figures. Which you than turn around and put up on your website for outrageous prices that are way above retail.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us. Sort of how I shared mine.

I have a right to tell her how to run her business (I didn't). She has a right not to listen. Thats kinda how rights work.

I also wasn't outright bashing her. I have nothing against her personally. Just the company she works for. I Work at Gamestop and a lot of people hate the things they do (myself included) and I don't take it personally.

Also when a company sponsors a contest it is to draw or to attract new customers. Or to maybe build good will. They are not doing this from the bottom of their hearts.

All my posts TLsmilieR pretty much say:

I would love to enter but morally I won't enter a contest that has such sleazy business practices.

Don't apologize for me, cmut. I don't apologize for anything I have written in this post.

I'm not telling them how to run their business. I'm just calling them out on their questionable business practices so that everyone is aware that they are scumbags.

It's obvious they are re-selling stuff for huge markups. Like Zook said, they even have TRU exclusive items on their web site. Not sure how TRU allows them do get away with that if they are truly a legitimate retail store.

I think he is correct. Regardless of the prices of their merchandise, they are in no way forcing you to buy from them. If you win then you win. If you don't want to spend the prize because you are turned off with their prices then that is up to you. I think this good contest and the bottom line is you can end up with free Skylanders.

You also have to remember that not all people have access to eBay and not all eBay sellers do international shipping. These high priced online stores are the next best thing for people outside the US. Even if they have a high price, they can probably sell you the item regardless of where you live and as long as you can afford it.

I will definitely try to join and my character will called "Skulper" FTW! hihihi

Wow guys, I do see that this is a point of contention, so I'll try to weigh in as best I can. Let me get this out of the way: I am aware that this post is tl;dr!

First, I didn't mean that my crew is hostile! I meant that this crew seems hostile! My coworkers are anything but!

I am aware that our prices are higher than big chain discounters. We don't get the same volume pricing or distribution they do, but that's only part of the story. The other part is that we are a small business that sells collectibles. The collectible market sets prices, and we do price to that market (meaning the current going price for whichever item is in question). I'm speaking generally here, not just of Skylanders.

I've seen on these boards breakdowns of rare item distribution, so maybe I can shed a little light here. A big box store like Walmart gets the standard mix, of which the majority is common items. They don't take time to know each line and it's variations, so they just stick them all on a shelf and think no more about it. If their commons don't sell, then they just clearance them out when it's time to make more shelf space. They can do that because they've made up the difference in massive volume. *I've seen $20 MSRP McFarlane, for example, for $1.50 at Target. We just can't take constant hits like that and stay in business when margins are slim.

Our mix also includes those common items, which may or may not sell. We don't get the same discounts or quantities they get, so we have to be much more careful with our inventory - we can't make up losses in volume across thousands of stores. As a collectibles store, we do take the time to learn about each product line, and we watch the secondary markets. While collectors always lament that you can never find rares and variants at discount chains (at least not consistently), the same would be true for us if we were selling at MSRP - we wouldn't have the items at all, the instant those prices went up. That's a fact - your "scalpers" run software to scan for those constantly and will grab them immediately, still leaving no opportunity for average customers. And even average customers who know the market will grab them to resell as soon as they're posted. The first person gets them all, nearly every time. So instead, we sell at market price. That means the rarer items are available at our store, from a reliable retailer instead of a random Craigslist or Ebay ad.

And for a small company, that's the how we can survive against the discount power of large chains. We pay more for our figures, and we run an even greater risk of being stuck with inventory that doesn't sell - those common items that make up the bulk of each assortment. It's not an ideal situation for us either, but ultimately, we're not setting those prices or those distributions that force us to take unwanted merchandise along with popular items - all at a higher cost to us than to those larger competitors. Those prices are the result of scarcity from the manufacturers, distribution assortments that are far less than ideal, and a secondary market that establishes a "collectors price" that is higher than retail due to those first two factors.

And frankly, if we were putting rare items up at the same prices as common ones, they still wouldn't be available, just as you find them not on the shelves at Walmart or TRU very often. As for wiping out WalMarts, we're just a single toystore in Nanuet, NY. We certainly don't have the time or ability to wipe retail shelves. We do purchase items that are made available to us through a variety of resources, including some that are "exclusive" to another retailer. Again, that's part of a collectibles market, one that operates any time a company chooses to make certain desirable items scarce.

I realize that I'm probably not going to sway opinions here, but that's the simple reality of being a small business in a big-chain discount economy. You must specialize or you can't compete - just ask the millions of hometown hardware stores and local merchants whose shops closed when Walmarts opened. We've been in business for 20 years, and we do offer secure shopping, ready availability for rare items, and good customer service. We're not scalpers, "scumbags" or jerks. We actually love the merchandise we sell and enjoy things like the many contests we run and the fun communities we're part of. But I'll say it again: staying in business against the buying power and volume of massive corporations means being different. We can't sell at their prices. We can't discount to their clearance levels. But we can know the collectible markets far better than they do. And nobody is being forced to pay premium prices to get rare items - these are just toys, after all. But for those who want the simplicity of getting the thing they're looking for from a reliable source easily, we fill a niche. And that niche keeps the lights on, even in an industry that often seems stacked against small businesses.

As for the contests? They're fun and I'm getting tons of great entries. I appreciate seeing what everyone dreams up!

Edited to add: the opinions expressed here are my own and not necessarily the official opinions of ToyWiz.com. In other words - this is how I see things. smilie

First of all, I want to thank you for coming in here and explaining this, to me and other people. I personally have nothing against you. Having an insight into your company operations does help. I can understand the difficulties and trials of running a small company against these big box companies.

However you have to understand where I'm coming from as a consumer. I've been collecting random cool things for years and when I search, Toywiz usually does have them in stock, but the prices have always kept me from a making a purchase.

Regardless I'm not here to attack your company and I wish you guys the best from customers willing to spend that much. I was merely stating my opinion on it.

If you won't attack I will. ToyWiz blows. Stay away unless you enjoy getting ripped off or have money to burn. The mere fact that they are selling (or should I say re-selling?) TRU exclusives like the legendary figures proves they are just buying and price gouging.

And thanks for the essay, Bebs. Very insightful. smilie

I'm an independant retailer competing in a market where the big supermarkets can undercut me. I too buy things in "Assortments" where some sell well and others sit on shelves for ages. I too cannot deal directly with manufacturers or in the bulk amounts the supermarkets (including 2 within a 2 minute walk from my store) to get the best deals... I have had to sell some things for more than the retail price to make money on them but I have NEVER sold anything for 6-7 times the retail price...

Your defence is flimsy... I'm sorry. I understand that business is tough but you can't possibly believe that your prices are fair surely? Some of those figures are being sold for more than the price of an entire box of Skylanders at their MSRP.

I can't tell you how to price your items... well I can, but you wouldn't have to listen and I wouldn't want to anyway. You can price things however you want, people are clearly willing to pay so I tip my hat to you. Charge as much as you can if that's what you want to do but please, don't try and justify it... just accept your/your company's choice to charge the prices they do and deal with the fact that people are going to hate you for it.

Lotus Frog is amazing! I'm extremely impressed with this one. What's his ability?

Also, just to tidy up from above: I'll say again that I have nothing at all to do with pricing. You're talking to someone who does graphics, giveaways, promotions and that sort of thing. If you get our newsletters, I make those. If you want to say hi on Facebook, most of the time you'll be talking to me. I love the concept of Skylanders but haven't played it myself because I have far too many irons in videogame fires already - a girl's gotta rest some time! I'm sorely tempted to give it a go, but I can tell I'd like it. And if I like it, I'll spend WAY too much time on it. And that just won't get my laundry done or walk my dog....silly things I already barely squeeze in between some EQ2 or WoW, Angry Birds Space, Plants vs. Zombies (Vase Breaker), Magic the Gathering on occasion, Lego stuff, customizing figures, reading a backlist of sci fi/fantasy novels....and a few other geeky hobbies.

So anyway, enough about me and about all that. I'm glad a few of you are going to participate. I do love having giveaways and contests smilie

Thanks! And no problem smilie I don't take things too personally - I've been playing videogames a long time and used to be a formidable killer in PvP, so I've seen flames far higher than these that were, most definitely, personal =P

I was going to enter, so I could have a chance a getting an evasive sonic boom, until I read the international shipping rules. $40 for a small package, $50 for medium and $95 FOR LARGE!! And they don't take credit points as payment so even if I got sonic boom, I would have to pay at least $40 to get it to my place. RIP OFF...!!!!!!
