Yes but the best answer is to experience it for yourself. Grab a Wii/XBox/PS starter pack and give a go. If you live in the US, TRU is having a sale where you can get the starter pack for $35.

the figures are aesthetically pleasing but you don't get much bang for your buck out of the game if you collect all of the figures.

don't get me wrong i like the game and it's an excellent concept but it is very, very repetitive and not very challenging.

The starter pack is definitely worth it... the worth of spending tons of money for extra Skylanders is subjective though, you don't need any more than the starter pack to finish the game (and get all the Trophies/Acheivements on the PS360 versions)... the final battle is tricky with just 3 but doable (not by me but a number have people have). Personally I kinda wish I had the restraint to have just got a minimum of extras - all 4 adventure packs when DP is out plus 1 each of life and air to complete the elements but I didn't...

All you truly need to complete the game is 1 of each element...that's to get into all the special areas. But watch gameplay of all the toys, and read about the individual ones and pick your favorites to play with.

To me it's worth it.

It's worth picking up along with all the figures of characters you like.

But it's not worth the trouble nor the price of trying to find every figure out there.

If you like any combination of Pokemon, Gauntlet, level grinding, and action figures, pick it up right away. It's a high quality fusion of those four things, and the way it's executed is very innovative. But if you're comparing it to, say, Uncharted 3, or Skyrim, or who-knows-what, and asking what gives the biggest bang for the smallest cash investment, it'd probably be one of those other games instead.

I'd say Uncharted 1 and Elder Scrolls Oblivion would be better cash investments than those.

I got it because it reminded me of the classic Gauntlet games. I was so very sad at how short the game was. ;; They need to make monster generators.

Quite simply If you like:

  • Easy to pick up and play games
  • Bright and often colourful graphics
  • A second player to be able to drop in and out of the game at any time
  • Collecting toy figures
  • Playing flash based web games

Then Skylanders is for you

If however you like

  • Long and difficult levels
  • High learning curve
  • 18s rating

Then Skylanders is not for you

I find I often talk and chat about Skylanders more than I play it, but I also can often spend hours playing the optional training Challenges with all the figures smilie

Oh I've loved Skylanders, but it's required a substantial investment way past the initial cost of the game even just to have one character of each element that I actually like, let alone the whole collection. You really don't get a very complete game for $60-70 compared to some other titles. Once you invest a little more, though, it does take off, and there's a lot to do/talk about, with a lively fandom.

I'm glad I'm not the only person who doesn't think doing heroics is boring... I find with each new Skylander the heroics play out slighlty different, for some they're pretty much easy all the time if you know the route and have leveled the character past about 5... but others offer different challanges (though I usually dread Drobots...).

So many people say they don't really bother with heroics and I guess not everyone enjoys that sort of thing (each to their own etc.) but I've done all 16 of my available challanges on all the 11 Skylanders I actually own (borrowed 5 my neighbour had that I don't) and I look forward to playing my new 4 Skylanders when I get home.

Though I have to say that if you don't like the figures then getting a bare minimum will increase the "bang for your buck".

It really depends on who you are as a player, and exactly how much money you have. On one side, you can progress through the whole game and beat it relatively shortly and with the 3 figures that come with the game.

If you're a completionist, you can buy the other 5 elements to achieve 100%. This is going back and finishing a level in a certain amount of time, finding treasure, soul gems, etc.

You can also level up all your characters to 10, level their abilities as well as using them in Heroic Challenges which will increase their power at the cost of annoying the dickens out of you trying to beat them. However, lots of people are buying ALL of the figures, and the game can get quite pricey depending on how much you want to spend. There's also 4 extra packs which give you another level.

I've sunk a lot of time and money into this series and I personally feel ok with that. I mean, I've logged almost 80 hours in total playtime with the Wii version alone! I'm not really a hardcore gamer, but if you are, you may not be super interested in the game.

As a gamer who has 100% several of my favourite games and also maxed out the time clock on some of those games, it can be possible to go hardcore on Skylanders. With the 20+ Skylanders I have at the moment, I find it can take an hour or so to run the figures through the Heroic Challenges and thus maxing out each figure. "I wanna be the very best..."smilie

I think it is totally worth it. The characters are quite difficult to find, but will be readily available soon (hopefully). It is fun! I love it, my wife plays it, as do three of my four kids. They think it's great! I started with the jumbo pack at Best Buy ($99), which got me 7 characters as well as the Pirate Seas pack. I now have 15 characters, and just scored the Darklight Crypt pack at Gamestop. The adventure packs open new levels (there are four of them), and that makes it fun. Once you have 100% completion, there are still the 4 extra levels and the heroic challenges to complete. It won't last forever, but is great until you are totally done. Not a cheap game, but everyone seems to love it. Buy a starter pack and see if you like it. If not, you can likely get half your money back selling it on eBay.
