I noticed some time ago that ppl were having problems with battery life on the ps3 and wii portals. Since i was having the same problem i started to mess around with it and have modded it so now i can run off batteries or i can plug it into a wall socket. I find this better then the xbox portal or using the 3ds portal because there is a plug in closer to me then having a usb cord stretched across my living room with kids running around (disaster waiting to happen lol). It was pretty simple and only took about 30-45min and i had all the parts lying around the house. If anyone would like to know how i did it i will put pics and instructions later

Here are 4 pics they are not that great but they give you a idea of what i did http://imgur.com/uFOAo&e2Z2m&6n3wm&715TwI found something that took 3 AAA batteries and could plug in (a breast pump of all things lol) and took the piece that took the plug in (fourth pic)
both powers (red wire) go to the main board the - (black wire) for the battery goes to the plug piece and then goes to the board (as seen in first and third pic). the hole in the side of the plastic was done with a small flat head screw driver that i twisted till i pocked threw then i took a knife to get the hole the right size. as for the plastic piece that is securing the plug in on the side I cut it out of the pump and took a soldering iron and basically welded it to the side of the portal lol.
I am not really good at explaining thing (should of made a video lol) but if there is any questions you have just ask and i will try to explain as best i can

I would guess an AC/DC adapter set to 4.5v and then wired to the 2 connections on the portal. I have thought about this, but then I just tossed in rechargeables.

I didn't wire it direct into the board if that is what you mean the cord can be unplugged from the portal

just wire it to the battery terminals themselves, i'm not sure if you'll get any back voltage going across the batteries though, or if that would cause problems...

Have you considered getting a power mat? Would that work?

That's really impressive essadis. Couple of questions:
- How do you take apart the Portal of Power? I have a Wii portal and aside from the screw for the battery compartment, I don't see any others that would let me take it apart. I also don't see any tabs or latches that I can depress to open it up.
- What is the voltage and amperage specs on your adapter? I am assuming 4.5v 200mA (microAmps)--any Ohms specs to that? I am no electrical genius, so how much of a deviation in those specs have you found that works (i.e. 5v with 1 Ampere)
