What Is It Like (For A Classic Spyro Fan)? [CLOSED]

So I am fairly adamantly a classic Spyro fan - I've played the original trilogy a dozen times and actually enjoy Enter the Dragonfly as it is the most similar to the Insomniac method.

But I didn't mind A Hero's Tail, or any of the Game Boy Advance games or even Shadow Legacy.

But how is this game for a classic Spyro fan?

What I liked about the Insomniac games:

- level variety (lots of different weather patterns, design elements, locations range from desert to factory)
- non playable characters (lots of characters to speak to / interact with)
- minigames (little puzzles/side-quests/mini-games to break up a level)
- catchy music (was fun and digestible, didn't overpower gameplay or annoy)

How does this game stack up against Insomniac Spyro and even just open-world platformers in general? Is it a platformer? And if I only buy Spyro and no other character (well or only the 3-character starter pack), to what extent is this game still open to me? As in percentage? 70%? 90% ?

Anyways that is all. I own every Spyro game to date including the "Legend of" series even though I despise them but for the price tag of this game and considering four excellent games just came out/are about to (Kirby's Return to Dreamland / Rayman: Origins / Super Mario 3D Land / The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword) - I don't want to waste money on a Spyro game I'll hate.

The levels change from sunny grassy feilds to rainy muddy 'war zones' pretty much theres also the hub world
Theres others to talk to
Theres puzzles in the levels
the music depends on the level although I like most of it, its baerly noticable when your playing anyway!
Spyro can only open Magic areas they pop up every once in a while
And I think its kind of what Spyro games would be like if the classic spyro games continued to this point - changed but still the same in some ways! And theres also characters that are like ones in the old games too!

Should be noted that the console version is not much of a platformer, so much as it is an action adventure game, as you can't jump manually, you have to touch a blue bounce pad.

However, the 3DS version lets you jump manually, and is designed around this feature.

There's plenty of variety, as someone said we have feilds, war zones, underground mines, flying cities, ancient castles, etc.
IMO the music is nice but mostly forgettable, and the same goes for the visuals.
There are NPCs to talk to.
There are collectables to gather and unlockable areas to explore, puzzles to solve, and the like.

It's also important to note that the story is similar to that of a Classic in that it is light, the feel of the game is much like a Classic, all happy and bright, the story and locations are whimsical and fun, and the gameplay although not a true platformer in the console version is still much like Classic Spyro.

I have PC version, it's quite good. I think it's the same as the console.

Definatley get the console version.
I am a 100% classic spyro fan! I love everything about thing about Insomniac's games! And I tried some of the other spyro games, but I couldn't play seeing how stupid spyro looked and ecspecialy how STUPID money bags looked! If it aint broke dont fix it, right! But I gave skylanders a try... and I sorta liked it! But still preffer the classics more.

Classics: My true loves.... except Enter the Dragonfly.

Legends: Screw it.

Skylanders: HECK YES... But the classics still belong to my heart.

I got my best friend Trystan to like it, since she's a classic fan like me, and we've both noticed how he went back to the classics, we started to love the crap out of it.

Classic: Awesome, the best

TLOS: Lame, tacky, overdramatic, an insult to the franchise

Skylanders: Not the best, but fun and innovative

If you like to run around and kill things for fun, I suggest Skylanders.

I actually am really impressed with the game! It really has the feel of the old Spyro's game, without just being a cheap ripoff. And I love the level designs. smilie I actually get kinda nostalgic when I play it. Oh, and unlike TLoS, you never feel stressed to worried to be something or kill something. It's just... fun. smilie

The original is still the best.

Neal I would start with the console version if you like it then get the 3Ds!

I really do not think it is much like older Spyro games though.
So go in with low expectations ( for a Spyro game that is) you might be surprised!
....you might really like it!

Well, the console version feels a bit like one of the old Spyro games to me. 3DS just reminds me of Crash Bandicoot 2....

Either way, it is really fun, but not as fun as the classics.(And with TLOS, let's just say I really hated it)

I haven't tried all the Spyro's games (only three of the classic series, which are Spyro 1, Enter the Dragonfly and A Hero's Tail and all the TLoS games expect The Eternal Night), but I can say that if you loved the first three games, you'll love Skylanders (console version) too: it's funny, colorful and with great environments: you could be worried about the fact that you can't jump, Spyro's new design wasn't the best choise and the new camera (like me), but when you are playing, you won't mind about these problems. There are also some refereances to the TLoS series (like Cynder and Malefor in the character's bios), but they are very little smilie
