It doesn't really fit the definition of "irony: proper, but the last definition for "ironic" looks right:
3.
coincidental; unexpected: It was ironic that I was seated next to my ex-husband at the dinner.

And it was confirmed by a recent E3 2011 interview on Skylanders, that the devs did in fact look at the first Spyro game for references. The Portal of Power is the physical form of the portals seen in Spyro 1.

They actually said the Portal of Power is the physical form of the portals form Spyro 1? It doesn't look like the portals, but I suppose it makes sense.

And here's the E3 2011 interview I was talking about that Michael Graham says about Spyro being in Skylanders and the portals from the original games being in a more physical form in Skylanders in the form of the Portal of Power. It's at 5:37.

The red dragon that resembles Spyro in the trailer could either be Flame or just a reference to him.

In one of the Screenshots There's a Angry tree attacking(not Stump Smash) and In Spyro 2 There's a level with trees that come to life and attack
Would that be a referance?? |

I've noticed them too. The pirate level kinda reminds me of Lost Fleet from Spyro 3 or Breeze Harbor from Spyro 2. |

I noticed in the Darklight Crypt that you can switch between the Real World and the Ghost World in order to get past certain objects and enemies. This is a possible reference to Spyro: Shadow Legacy when you have to switch between the real realm and the Shadow Realm to see and get past certain objects.

Upgrading the Skylanders might be reference to Shadow Legacy where you give Spyro new abilities. The only difference is that in Skylanders, it requires treasure rather than levelling up.

There's also Auric who is an obvious reference to Moneybags in Spryo 2 and 3 except he gives you gems to help you get places as oppose to blocking your way until you give him gems.

Flynn is also a reference to the Balloonists of Spyro 1 supposudly, and him and cali are probably references to the cheetah tribe dudes of DotD.
Also, stealth elf has hooves, which could be a reference to Elora. (Why else would she have hooves?) Then there's Persephone the fairy, reference to Zoe probably.

I'm sorry, Aura, also, I noticed in the gba version of The Enternal Night, Dark Spyro is more of a dark purple and has grey horns and wings. Dark Spyro from Skylanders has this same color scheme. |

Someone's probably mentioned it here already, but Flynn the Baloonist is directly named after one of the baloonists that transports you between home worlds in the original Spyro the Dragon. Flynn's design and colour scheme is based on that of the baloonist in the first home world in Spyro the Dragon, the Artisan's home, although this baloonist wasn't the one named Flynn.
