In another EL33TONLINE interview about Skylanders, with Paul Reiche, creative director of Skylanders, Paul mentions the following:

"Paul says that, if a sequel to Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure is ever made, it’s possible that these same toys (and accumulated skills) will be usable with the game’s follow-up, too."

That was to be expected.

But unless the game is good, I frankly don't care for its sequel.

Yeah, I won't be surprised if there is a sequel. If the game does as well as the creators are saying it's going to be, this is a never ending gold mine for Activision. The game itself is expensive enough, but if they're that desperate, they can pull the new characters out of their a** and just keep on selling them.smilie

WELL! If Skylanders is a spin-off it's most likely just an experiment to see if people like the idea, but because Activision don't want to risk loosing money investing in the game they add Spyro to the game so that even if the toy idea does turn out to be a failure, then people might still buy it because of Spyro. Skylanders could, and will most likely, continue without Spyro to grow into a franchise of it's own.

i think if they did a sequel it could be quite different and most likely use Crash Bandicoot , which would be good as i am a big Crash fan it would be quite simular as they have in this game Spyro and Cynder , so they would probably have Crash and Coco but then again it could possibly destroy the Crash franchise as there would be an awkward twist and Cortex would disapear .. i guess smilie

I'm thinking a sequel would likely not involve Spyro. Activision DID mention wanting a different direction with Spyro afterwards.

Last I checked, 60% of the gaming market isn't built upon action adventure games for kids that revolve around collecting buyable toys to use in the game...

Don't compare Skylanders to something as unoriginal as an FPS

#26 Posted: 20:53:32 13/09/2011
Skylanders is unoriginal in character design (Most are very similar to things from a lot of games), is pretty generic (That you can tell from the good deal they've already shown), and is only unique in the toy concept.

And do note, 29 toys x 8 bucks a pop = 232 bucks for the technical full game. Add 70 dollars to that, and you have 302 bucks. In most states in the US, you must add 6 pennies per dollar in tax. $320.12 is the total there. That implies the toys, making the gross majority of the total price, are intended more as a gimmick for revenue purposes than something meant as a creative concept. THAT is what it shares in common with CoD: Revenue by gimmick.

CoD doesn't have a gimmick, people are just stupid enough to pay above average price for it every year and the extra DLC. Skylanders has an original gimmick, it's not something that's been done before and you completely missed that in your previous post. Also, no one in their right mind would buy all 32 of the characters and pay, as you said, $302-320 because there's no motive behind it.

Actually, I think Activision should make a sequel that your data from the first game could be relevant in. Why? Anyone here of Mass Effect? Know how your Mass Effect 1 save file totally effected Mass Effect 2? Yeah, it's a good concept. Activision, run with it. I'd pay money for that. <.< >.>

Yes, new characters and you can continue your progression on the first ones, it would be awesome.

Also, about that thing of the 32 toys... you don't need to own the 32 toys to complete the game. So, if you own the 32 toys, it is because you are a COLLECTOR, and collectors don't mind to pay anyway.
Prysom Ripto Gems: 131
#31 Posted: 14:07:18 17/09/2011
Do note this targets little kids, who would buy anything.

Besides, a gimmick, original or not, is still a gimmick.
Reimu Yellow Sparx Gems: 1076
#32 Posted: 14:23:52 17/09/2011
Yes it targets kids but it is the parents that will pay no? And I'd rather buy some skylanders for my kids than barbies or Bratz (which are more expensive =/ and give a bad image of girls)

So let say I decide to buy the 32 skylanders for my kids. Note that they don't come out all at the same time, 3 of them come with the game. So now 29 skylanders? So 2 skylanders per month (for instance) so around 12 bucks per month and the game is still appealing for my kids. Also, some of them can be bought in a 3 pack, 2 of them come with an expansion.

12 bucks per month? It's nothing! It's less than a World of Warcraft account, and a lot of people are ready to pay 15$ per month for a wow account, so why not 12 bucks per month for my kids? Sounds good to me!

It's still an unnecessary price.

#34 Posted: 14:28:51 17/09/2011
Buying a game is an unnecessary expense anyway. And like I said earlier, you don't need to own them all to complete the game, it's not an obligation, it's a choice =)

70 bucks that include the game, the device and 3 toys. It's expensive but... quite fair at the same time... I guess we will see!

^Absolutely this.

Mass Effect 2's system of using save data from the previous game was brilliant, and made the game so much more compelling. I would love to see other games try this, particularly games that have different outcomes depending on the choices you make (like Mass Effect).

I don't buy brand new games as soon as they come out, I do the wise thing and wait for two to three years, by then, it's half price.

I'm not sure if it would be wise for Spyro as some toys may be sold out and hard to find in 2-3 years.
Or for game like Call of duty with a new game each year, the online community will be less interesting with less players, and in fact, only over powered players since they have been playing since over a year =/
It's wise for games like Mass Effect, Dead Island or Red Dead Redemption though.

I thought it was the other way around. They put Spyro in Skylanders to make HIM more popular, to see if another Spyro game that is just Spyro would be worth it. Quite frankly that makes more sense; Skylanders could make it big all on its own, no need for Spyro. Spyro on the other hand has been on a slow but steady decline since Insomniac stopped making it, and so needs all the help he can get. But I agree with you on the last statement.

It's been recently said that Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is a spin-off for the Spyro series. Like Bionicle said, Skylanders will probably continue without Spyro. And it's recently been confirmed that this game is intended for the young target audience who don't know who Spyro is.
