.....Really? To get all the levels, I have to buy every toy?
.....Think I'll just buy Sonic Generations and it's inevitable DLC, which is in digital form.

I would just buy a few toys and that's it. Only the ones I'm interested in.

I still don't see how digital form is somehow superior to physical form. As long as you know how to take care of stuff, you won't have to worry about losing them (if that's the big deal). |

When you don't have a proper place to live, you don't have much space to put stuff..... And the digital form costs less, because in the physical form, you pay for not just the data, but the materials too. Also, digital data is superior as it goes straight to your memory unit (HDD, SD card, etc), and therefore, loads a lot faster. With physical data (discs, and in this case, the toys), your console has to stream the data, therefore, taking longer to load.

That first bit you have a point with. But that isn't really the case for everyone.
Not really. The toys could cost as little as $5 USD, while most DLC is around $10-$15 USD. There isn't much loading with the toys. You place it on, you see the little animation it makes, and you're playing right away. At least, that's what I saw in the gameplay footage we were given. |

But there are a lot of people who have small bedrooms, or live in small apartments, and such.
I thought the toys cost $10. But in any case, I would still get Sonic Generations over this, as it looks like a better game, and Sega were extremely generous with the Sonic Unleashed DLC (250 MS Points per pack, each pack including 6-9 stages, I believe). That's just the characters. Levels are likely to take a while to load, due to them being on an external memory device. And while were on the character switching topic, get this: The LEGO games have a "Free Play" mode that lets you switch between a wide variety of characters at the click of a button, without any load times at all or any pointless animations. Skylanders is doing the exact same thing, but is making it more money consuming and time consuming.....

My apartment isn't the biggest in the world either. Same applies to the bedroom. I still wouldn't lose the toys.
It was said to cost under $10. That could range from $5-$7. If that's your choice, go ahead. I actually want to try and rent both Skylanders and Sonic. But both of them have developers that I don't trust. We're not sure yet. Maybe it's like MvC3. The levels might already be in the game itself, but just locked until you get the toy needed. Different developers, different publishers. And it's not completely necessary to get all of the toys. There might be a full game in the game automatically, and that the levels that come with the toys are like bonus levels that you would get out of DLC. |

I didn't say anything about losing them. I said that just having space to store them is an issue. They are kind of big.
I might rent Skylanders, but only if I can rent the toys too. If that's the case, I hate the toy concept even more. Again, the levels and characters just should be on a disc. It's a pointless, money grabbing scheme, and when people realise that, they won't want the game.

That isn't a problem either. I'm pretty sure I can find a bag or case to put them in. Other's can do the same.
That's the one thing that would stop me from being able to rent the game. Gamefly isn't going to send me a toy and portal with the game. I don't. It's physical DLC. People are willing to gobble up DLC for CoD, Sonic, or TF2, but won't do the same for this and would instead baawww about it. It's hypocrisy at it's finest. That's Activsion for you. People already don't want the game. Just for a different reason that's worse than that one. |

I don't know whether to get this game or not, since it is aimed for younger kids, I know that the classic Spyro games are for kids but to me, it's different because I grew up with those games, and don't have a problem playing them, but when it's something new, I'm not sure if I'm being 'sad' in getting this game or not.

That could damage them.
The reason I am "bawwwing" at this is because they are making nearly all the games content accessible through the toys. Most games just have extra content that the developer could not finish in time for the game's deadline, or are just things they didn't think of until after the release of the game. Why can't I just play the damn game, with all the levels and characters accessible like nearly every other game, and then get extra content later? With Sonic, TF2 and CoD, I don't have to pay have to play as a mandatory character. It's just optional maps, and in TF2's case, costumes. So you're saying my reason is not a good one?

Not if I'm careful with them.
It's an attempt to get money out of the kids. We're not kids, so we know better. We don't have to go complaining to everyone. Did I say that? No. It's a reasonable......reason. You don't want to spend money on toys. That's perfectly fine. |

But the thing is, if they ditched the toys thing, more kids might buy it. Parents aren't exactly pushovers when it comes to buying things for their kids, especially in times of recession. Why can't Activision understand that if they just simply make a good game, it will sell, seeing as they have lots of big brands?

Not really, since most kids love toys and games, and will levitate towards Skylanders.
Because Activision are idiots. For the most part, I'm happy they got Spyro out of his grave, even if it was just to get people to notice his name. I'm happy since what could happen for the franchise if the game is successful. |

I think you got it backwards.
This game will be sold in the game isle, along with all of the other games. Maybe even the other separate toys as well. But even if the individual toys are sold in the toy isle away from the games, understand that kids buy toys (particularly figurines) because it relates exactly to something they like, seen on tv, or even played in a game. Kids don't want that knock-off that impersonates a character from a fictional universe, they want the real deal. You are right about the "If you create a good game, they will buy it" concept. Activision may be doing it backwards trying to release the toys at the same time, like they are backing their car into a spot that might not be big enough for it. But again, the Starter and Adventure Pack will be sold along with the other games. If anything else, Toy'R'Us will have a special section that endcaps one of the toy isles designed specifically for promoting the game. This probably is the case, since Activision has introduced Toys'R'Us as their official distributor. |

@riverhippo: Exactly, and kids can't really "play" with these toys in the traditional sense, as they are attached to stands. If the toys could be played with properly, the toy concept would actually make sense from a consumer standpoint.
If you create a game that is good and advertised well, people will buy it. Even more so if it is part of a well known name, such as Spyro. In the end, the consumers don't actually benefit from the toys. People will realise this, and it becomes a big turn off, therefore, the game declines in sales.

There are a lot of toys that don't move or are on stands, and kids still play with them. I know I did back when I was a kid.
Yes, but people don't care for Spyro anymore, remember? There will obviously be some gimmick attatched to give him this much attention. People, as in teens and adults. Not kids. They'll gobble it up. And don't you kinda hope for the sales to be good? Remember, Activision has plans for Spyro himself if the game sells well, and he would get his own game while Skylanders branches off into it's own franchise. |

CAV, nowadays, kids as young as six get mobile phones and iPhones for Christmas, as well as bigger things like electric scooters. Toys on a stand isn't really that much of an ideal present for a child anymore.
Spyro is remembered. It's been a while since DotD, but people remember him. Even the guys in my school remember him. Kids won't gobble it up. Seriously, look at the competition. Nintendo, Sonic, movie tie-ins, sports games, and even more "mature" games, like FPS games. The characters in Skylanders look like something from a generic kids cartoon. Kids will look at it, and think "that's for babies". There will be more older Spyro fans buying this as opposed to new kids. I do hope for the sales to be good. I do want Spyro to get proper, better games after this. But the truth is, there are a lot of flaws in Activision's strategies. I don't think it will do REALLY bad, but I don't think it will do as good as Activision expect it to either, and if it doesn't go as well as they planned, they might can the Spyro franchise.

Blame the parents, not the kids. And I don't see kids as young as 6 getting iPhones.
Yeah. They remember him as a lost cause, where the series should've ended after YotD. They also remember him by the LoS fanboys and the crazy fanart they've drawn. That's not a good thing. You're thinking of the wrong kids. You're thinking of kids around 10-12, when this game is targetted (mostly) towards 5-9. Hell, my little brother is interested in this game, and he's an FPS junkie that never gave two ****s about Spyro. It might not look good on your side of the world, but around here, kids will want to buy it, along with the FPS's and Sonic games they normally get. Yes, it looks like a generic kids cartoon. So does another certain show that I shall not mention. And yet look how popular that is, even with the teen and adult crowd no less. Imagine with Skylanders. You never know. Well don't complain about them to me. I'm not Kotick, nor do I have contact with him. |

I've seen plenty of kids getting iPods. Not iPhones. The difference is pretty much testing and calling, but I don't think you'd give a kid a phone. I was at Target on Saturday and I saw at least six people reserving iPods. Two at least for kids.
