Activision added Spyro because of its recognition among all fans out there. Basically, once Spyro has captured newcomers - the company can decide to keep this new series going on, or if enough attention, put him into an entirely new game. --- "Soon all of Skylands will tremble at the awesome might of Malefor, the Undead Dragon King!"
