Drawn to Life gets me everytime... Oh, and I'm happy I picked it up for £7- at launch!! Hehe, HMV thought it was some crummy, cheap game they needed to get rid of.
But seriously- we're comparing the amazing platformer LBP to a simulation game?! They're completely unrelated!! The creation part of it isn't the entire game, y'know.

My brother raised an interesting point about Spyro's release date a little earlier:
Spyro is being releases around the same time as some MUCH more popular games like Diablo3, which could have a negative impact on sales as the bigger more popular/anticpated games will get far more coverage, meaning fewer potential new buyers will pay attention to Spyro. What are your thoughts?

It doesn't matter, people who may be a new buyer for Spyro depending on the changes they've made probably won't see much or anything of SK given that all the media coverage will be on the bigger games, and Spyro will be lost in shadows of superior titles That or they themselves might be paying more attention to Diablo and others than Spyro if that's what more firmly in the limelight. Know what I'm saying?

Barely. It's because while LoS was good, it wasn't enough to catch the attention of people when bigger games were coming out. ANB comes out in 2006. So did Gears of War. TEN comes out in 2007. So did Halo 3, Mario Galaxy and Modern Warfare. DotD comes out in 2008. So did GTA IV, Fallout 3 and MGS 4. |

The producers did say that the Classic series losing its touch, and it was either doing the reboot or no more Spyro games. The LoS isn't dying, it's starting out as a beginning series, similar to StD, RR, and YoTD, and the games afterwards.

I still think they're unimaginative to some extent, because they could have still improved on the Classic series, it also seemed like they didn't give it enough chance, only two console games on it? I mean, come on, at least have five or six before having a re-boot. Mind you, they could never really find a decent developer, they should have turned to Travellers' Tales... |

That doesn't make much sense, seeing as most of the fans that I've seen really like A Hero's Tail, so I don't see how that lost popularity, I think it was due to advertising, or other bigger franchises taken over, again advertising. And probably the publishers rushing the developers, it's so stupid. I've been trying to get used to TLOS, and sometimes I can, and then most of the time I can't, it's so frustrating. |

Actually, LoS did not sell as well as the classic games did, and DotD didn't even sell as well as AHT.
So in that theory - If classic was dying, then so was LoS. We don't know if Acti will notice this, or if they'll give LoS another chance.

Y'know, it would be so bad if t hey at least kept as much of the essence of what made Spyro Spyro in the first place. I agree with SuperSpyroFan that they were kind of unimaginative and could/should have done morew ith the classics, but even if they had kept Spyro's personality and built on it, and also kept more scavenger hunting and platforming, but also added more combat and story, LOS really wouldn't be so bad. On the contrary, it would actually have been quite good, perhaps some of my favorite games to date. I don't think it would have lost as many fans as it did, that's for sure.

Yes, it is a real shame, I mean if you look at the Tomb Raider games, they went through a reboot and started with Legend, and they seriously didn't change it that drastically, which still makes them games popular and to me, just as enjoyable only a little different, but with TLOS it's like they seriously just changed it too much, and went over the top. |

Well the classics DiD have a chance to shine.
How many games did Spyro have before the LoS? Quite a few. And medal of honor was slaughtered when Rising sun came out, they only rebooted that series because Medal of honor nearly went bankrupt after several failed games, all beginnign with the release of Rising Sun. Don't get me wrong, RS was very good (well, a few choice levels anyway) but there was supposed to be a sequel beginning with Donnie's capture in "The Fall of the Phillipines", when sales records came in for RS, EA quickly scrapped the project and suffered a pretty damaging blow. I do not wish to see Spyro die just because people refused to allow anything other than Classic to be created until the series released their own "Rising Sun". |

And what if Legend series kills Spyro off? Then what? We could say the same about the Legend series. The trouble is, all of these 'It should be Legend/Classic' arguements ALWAYS go the other way too. I'm particularly narked about how Legend fans 'forget' that DotD was a flop sales-wise. And granted, some could say classic fans do the same with AHT, but at the end of the day, it still sold well.

Which sold well AHT DotD or both?
Also, Spyro isn't Medal of Honor or Rising Sun. I've said it a thousand times before, I understand the need for change, change is good, but it's so stupid to eliminate what made a game good/ popular and thereby alienate so many fans! Make deeper characters and a deeper darker story that's fine. Add in some more combat as well, that's okay too. But DON'T destroy the character's personality all together and DON'T eliminate all the elements that were present from day one ie. platforming, free roam, and scavenger hunting. They should have built off of what was existing, either to make a continuing game or make a sort of prelude/back story for Spyro. I don't say that simply becasue I am a classics fan. What I just said seems like a genuinely smarter idea IMO.

First of all, Rising Sun IS a Medal of Honor game. And its called reptition, dotD didn't do well because few parts of the game were change (I.e, long battles.)
WWII made MoH popular, when Rising Sun came out, fans were like "ugh, another WWII game? Haven't we covered this enough?" That's why and WaW were maasacred sales wise, it overrused an already overrused setting. ANBs producers were probably worried about continuing the classic games and taking a devastating hit. That's why I think they rebooted the series. |
SuperSpyroFan Diamond Sparx Gems: 9414 |
#4745 Posted: 14:01:15 24/01/2011
I also think that the producers are idiots because saying something like "It's either a re-boot for Spyro or no more Spyro games" Well that to me is just like ending the series, because The Legend of Spyro isn't really Spyro at all, it could have easily been a story about some random dragon, but the only thing that could get it the interest is the fact that it says 'Spyro' on the cover. But really though, I don't understand why some fans would want to play a game that has the character and the gameplay changed so much, and that has also been rushed too.
I honestly don't think that there was enough Console games of the Classic Spyro to finally give up on it, improvements could have been made to A Hero's Tail. I wouldn't have minded a re-boot, but seriously I can't really get along with it, since they have changed it way too much, and I really don't give a damn if I sound like a parrot, but this just makes me feel better to get this off my chest. Another thing is, if they were going to change so much of it to make Spyro hardly recognizable then what was the point of the re-boot? The only real thing that was kept the same to me was the logo 'Spyro' And it's the same thing with the Crash games too. They might aswell have ended the series, since they just couldn't be bothered to continue it and try to make improvements. |

Having "classic" spyro in LoS' dark universe would be kinda awkward. "Classic" just seems to lighthearted for LoS' univese. |

I don't, I think the personality is too bland, don't see what's so special about it, and really in the Classic series, you didn't really see much of a personality for him because there wasn't much of a storyline, so really they have randomly just given Spyro a personality, which in my case, doesn't suit him at all. I personally would rather have the series end, it would stop me from moaning about it and thinking "Why? Does this have to happen to one of my favourite characters" but then again I can think "**** it, it's just a game" |

But othr than that, the classic were terrible, and I'm not trying to offend anybody. The only other okay classic is the first game. RR was okay, but not great. And YotD was a total massacre, all I liked of that one was the trick skating on the "Enchanted Towers" level. Spyro fusion? Though I like crossover games, that was more minigame than storyline. |

I'm not really bothered about the handheld games, never have been really. I think I only like the Classics because they were one of the first games that I played as a kid, and back then, there was no over the top dark sides to any game that I played, and so I didn't know any different, and to all of a sudden have that change, is big for me, and it just messes it up. My favourite used to be GtG, but now it's StD. YotD is okay, but sometimes there are too many challenges in one level, and I don't like that, because it just feels like a round of mini-games instead of a platform game. Probably the first two Spyro games that I like the most. |
