I'd have thought it'd be tens or hundreds of thousands, if not millions for a higher end game.

I doubt this game is in the millions. It looks pretty with the graphics and all, but the actual gameplay is really simple, and could be pulled off even on a PS1 game. Though the manufacturing of the toys might cost them a bit, as they will need restocking and such.

Yes, higher end and AAA titles (like Skylanders) do cost millions to make. It's just as expensive (sometimes moreso) than big-budget films. What runs up the costs is development: you have to pay dozens of programmers, artists, statisticians if you're doing demographic analysis, advertisers of all sorts, advertising campaign directors, manufacturers, etc, etc. The list is really long. And Skylanders has added to the mix by hiring not one but two acclaimed writers (who don't come cheap) and a big-name composer (also expensive). I have no doubt whatsoever that Skylanders has cost Activision over a million at least to get this far.

And, sorry, Super, but it really does cost in the thousands just to make a simple game. My friends in the industry work on Facebook games and their monthly salaries alone would drive those simple games into that price range. Even Indy games are mildly pricey to make what with needing to buy the software to make the games and some developers giving up well-paying job time to work on these projects.

GirlGamer posted a interview of Skylanders with Johnathan Minz, the executive producer of the 3DS version. We see gameplay of Stealth Elf and a brief of Dark Spyro.

Wouldn't it have been a lot more easier to just update the graphics of the Spyro games on the PS, then to go to all this trouble for this type of game? Lol, I don't see the logic in that. Anyway, that's Activision's problem if it costs them all that time and money to make this type of game, if there were struggling with it, they wouldn't have bothered to do it at all. If theyre perfectly fine in doing this, I'm sure they'll be fine on doing what I just mentioned.

Money, that's why. The game may only be $10 more expensive than a regualr game, but buying two copies is WAY too expensive for alot of people.

I could ask for this game on Christmas, but I'm not very interested in it, and to me, it doesn't look all that great so I'm not going to bother for the time being. But I've decided to get a few old platformers that I once had, so that will be nostalgic. They're actually PS games, I don't care about the graphics.

I assume that, if any multiplayer, the 3DS will be restricted to local wi-fi. By that, I mean two people in the same room rather than anyone around the world.

That would be the one reason I don't get Skylanders. I highly doubt I would bother with the console versions unless I rented them. And renting it would only include the game. So how would I play and try it out?

Amazon sells the 3DS version for $10 cheaper, but it's still too much when other versions only cost an extra $10.

Actually, the PC version is slightly cheaper than the console version. PC games are always cheaper, not really sure why. I always assumed that it was because you can never be certain if a PC version is going to run on your PC as well as it runs on a console.

Every version of the game costs the same in the UK; £59.99. The 3DS version, too. Seeing as both 3DS and console games cost £39.99, looks like they're just going £20 of that.

I think the worst part is that I'll only be playing as Dark Spyro in the 3DS one- I really don't like Ignitor and Stealth Elf all that much. May get the Wii one instead, seeing as I'll at least have Spyro and Gill Grunt.

EDIT: Anyone know if the Wii version is compatible with Gamecube/classic controllers? Can't stand the Wii remote.

Honestly I think I'd laugh if anyone's comp couldn't run the game. smilie Mine's a few years old, and that's old for a computer's lifetime, and my computer can run American McGee's Alice, a far more demanding game than Skylanders is shaping up to be. So if my computer can run something as high end as Alice2 Madness Returns and well enough for it to look good and perform well, I'd expect any decent comp to be able to run Skylanders just fine.

I took a look at Skylanders' Wikipedia page, and saw this under Reception:

Quote:
Even though this game is still in development, it has received a very large amount of negativity from many Spyro fans of both the Original and Legend of Spyro series. Common complaints include Spyro's different character design, the game's younger target audience (compared to The Legend of Spyro trilogy), the absence of nearly all of the popular characters from both series mentioned before (Sparx, Hunter, Cynder, Sgt. Byrd, Ignitus, etc...), the concept of using toys in order to play the game, the recommendation of having to buy all 32 toys in order to see the game's full experience (even though they'd only need one toy of each element in order to complete the game), and for being another continuity reboot. The negative criticism on the game also involves some fans claiming that Skylanders will fail upon its release based on what they hate about the game so far, as evident in the comments of IGN's upload of Spyro's character trailer on YouTube, and Gamespot. Several fans have also been sending hate mail and even death threats to both Activision and Toys for Bob in the hopes of trying to get them to cancel Skylanders, but both gaming companies are, of course, ignoring the harsh demands of the fans and are more focused on Skylanders' younger target audience.

The executive producer of Skylanders, Jeff Poffenbarger, noted that he is aware of the negative reaction of the game from long-time Spyro fans and hard-core gamers, and acknowledged the issue that the negativity is not the company's demographic for the game as they are aiming to take Spyro and introduce him to kids, the new target audience who have no idea who Spyro is.

When a second trailer was released on June 6, 2011 from E3 2011, it has received a mostly negative reaction on IGN's upload of the E3 trailer on YouTube.

According to the Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bathia, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is testing apparently very well with kids, who are the game's target audience.
