I've always liked the Spyro games. I disagree about the 3DS version being better though... The portal functionality just cannot compare to being able to swap characters on the fly like the console versions. They should at least let you load one of each element into the 3DS game. I hate only being allowed to have two characters.

I needed something else to start collecting in-between Lego Mini-figure series realeases. =P This Skylander collecting has proven to be much more expensive...but equally rewarding.

Call me a hippocrit...
I saw the ad on TV when it first came out, and I was all like, "Who'd buy such a kiddie game? And the figures you have to buy seperately? Like ANYONE is ever gonna fall for THAT obvious marketing trap." TWO DAYS LATER... "NEXT." "Hi, could I please buy this game?" "Ah... this one, 'Skylander's: Spyro's Adventure'. You're very lucky, you got the last one in stock! It's very popular..." And you get the picture. **Sheepish look**

I just got started just a little over a week ago, when GameStop had the starter packs on sale and I got the 3DS version. The manager of the store and I are good friends, and he tried to sell me on Skylanders last year when it first came out, but I just didn't get the point and wasn't interested.
Fast forward to the present. I was hooked on the game within about ten minutes, just love the platforming action and the ability to swap out and level up characters. Being a semi-collector of toys (McDonald's back when I was a kid and they were still good, and Japanese Winnie the Pooh figures and toys now) I knew that I had to have them all. I hit the jackpot last Thursday at GameStop, and got the PS3 starter, three adventure packs, and several three packs of characters. The three three-packs I didn't get in the store last week popped up on GameStop.com Monday and they arrived yesterday. Dragon's Peak showed up on TRU.com and it's on the way too. I'm really fortunate that I got into the game a little late, since the three-packs are much less expensive than buying individual characters, especially since I'm trying to get them all at once. All I'm missing is Camo/Warnado/Wham-Shell, and it's just a matter of time now. . . . I'm thrilled to have found this forum, it's going to be very helpful! I have a few questions regarding the web codes and the iOS game that just launched, and will post those when I figure out more about how this forum is organized. Don't want to step on any toes when I'm just getting started! |

Back in my younger days I was a Spyro fan, and me and that purple dragon had our share of adventures that were a blast. Then said purple dragon had a few rough years here and there and we lost touch. Sometime later I saw that he was back, an he brought a bunch of friends with him. At first I said to myself "This will never catch on" and then the videos of the characters, and some gameplay videos began to appear making me think "Hey that actually looks pretty fun." And then Christmas 2011 rolled around and I got the 3DS version as a Christmas present, while I hadnt quite reunited with that purple dragon yet I got to have some fun with his lookalike and a couple of his new friends and was hooked. I heard the console versions had a whole other story and different gameplay, and I knew I wanted it an that I wanted to bring my friend's into that world with me.
The after Christmas sales showed me that fate wanted me to have the console version too because I went into Best Buy and found the mega pack for the Wii, naturally I got it and the group of Skylanders that came with it. And the rest is history, I dont regret it at all and I've been having a blast ever since with my small army, adventuring with that old purple dragon again and all the rest of them. |

I got into it when my son and I were walking through TRU (pre-Thanksgiving), and there was a big table set up with a Skylanders demo. My son fell in love immediately, and got a bunch of figures for Christmas from Santa and relatives. I've been slowly buying up figures, but holding back giving them to my son because, well, they aren't cheap and I thought we needed a reason to give them to him.
I've been getting more and more disappointed with the distribution of the remaining figures lately, and when I saw this thread I knew what I had to do. Just this evening I let my son open two triple packs (WW/DT/DS and LR/C/Z) and Dragons Peak. He was SO excited, and he gave me a big ol' bear hug. My son - THAT'S why I got into Skylanders. And I still have the four legendaries left to give him for his birthday.

My story is a bit different. I've actually been a game critic since 2002, and the only reason i started with the Skylanders was that I got the game (and most of the figures available at the time) sent to me for review. Been hooked ever since, and now I'm only missing the last three.
Check my sig for the (almost complete) Skylanders omnibus review, covering all aspects of the Skylanders universe

I have played both the original playstation trilogy and the "Legend of" series of Spyro games and I am a huge fan of both. In fact, I think to this day the original Spyro the Dragon is honestly my favourite game of all time. I even like it better than games like Skyrim and Minecraft because I seem to be really in to classic 3D Platformers.
Anyway, my interest in the Spyro franchise did not factor in to why I got in to Skylanders however, as I never really saw Skylanders as a part of the Spyro series: To me it's more a seperate idea in its own right that happened to have Spyro thrown in it as one of the playable characters. The actual reason why I bought Skylanders is because I stumbled across a Let's Play of it on Youtube (specifically, the one by Tealgamer) and was impressed by the soundtrack and art direction, as well as knowing that the gameplay was the sort of thing I would be in to.
