Chapter 15

To his right was another canal basin that followed a circular pattern. Ahead of him however was a storage room. He went to the storage room and saw two barnacles attached to the ceiling. Beside them were a supply crate and a box of SMG rounds. He walked slowly around the barnacles to avoid being touched by their tongues. He smashed open the crate and the barnacles grabbed each a bit of broken crate. A suit battery came out of the broken crate and Spyro injected it into his suit. He also grabbed all of the SMG rounds from the box. He then crept past the barnacles and went back down to the basin.

Spyro entered the basin and saw that the only around the basin was above where there was a gap in the wall. To his right however was a ladder to the top. He climbed up it and stepped onto a ledge and saw a suit battery. He injected it into his suit and prepared for walking across some wooden planks and some corrugated iron balanced on some iron supports to get over to the gap. He balanced himself while walking over the planks and walked onto some corrugated iron and then onto the last plank over the gap. He noticed another wooden plank and another piece of corrugated iron balanced on the next few iron supports. He had to really balance himself now that he had to walk on the iron supports. However, once he got to another ledge, he noticed another lambda symbol, a medkit and a supply crate. He injected the health into his suit and broke open the crate with his crowbar. Out came a suit battery and he injected the energy into his suit. Spyro jumped of the iron supports and down to the basin floor. He stumbled slightly but quickly regained his confidence. He could smell more fresh air down the next passage. He walked down it and immediately came outside. However, all didn’t seem right.

He could hear a helicopter fly over him over the grate above him. When he jumped down onto what seemed a normal canal bed, a ticker on his suit started ticking wildly. His Geiger counter had picked up the signs of radiation. He could see that the pools of water around him were radioactive due to their colour. He walked around them towards what looked like a small outpost. Standing in it was a yellow dragon. “Headcrabs” he shouted and shot at some creatures in front of him which looked a lot like Lamarr back in Ignitus’ lab. The creatures died from the red dragon’s SMG. “Hey” he said, “you’re Spyro aren’t you? We got word you were coming. You got here at a bad time”. Then a radio beside him spoke up. “Black Mesa east to station 6 do you read” it said, “Spyro is on his way down river. Lend him the airboat and give him all the help you can. Repeat, Spyro has returned, it is critical he reaches Black Mesa east”. “We got some ammo in those crates over there” the yellow dragon, “help yourself to supplies and keep moving”. Spyro opened up an ammo box with SMG rounds in it. He gathered all of the ammo he could and closed the lid. He then walked down out of the outpost and through the radioactive canal.

Chapter 16

Spyro’s Geiger counter was still ticking when he reached a slanted structure made out of iron supports and a couple of pieces of corrugated iron. He crawled under it and walked into a large canal. “Incoming” shouted a female red dragon running away from something. “They’re shelling us” said a brown dragon also running away. Then a large metal shell crashed into the ground and killed the two dragons. A hatch opened from it and out popped three Headcrabs. Spyro shot at them with his pistol. Two of them went down but the third tried to jump up and attack him. He shot it frantically and he killed it. Spyro continued through the Headcrab stricken outpost.

Suddenly, more Headcrabs appeared from the ground and leapt at Spyro. He whacked them with his crowbar and they both died instantly. Spyro walked on and suddenly saw on the other side of a wire fence a green dragon stumbling into a chair next to a table. He had a Headcrab on his head and he was desperately trying to get it off. He was making low pitched moaning noises as he tried to throw it off. He grabbed one of its legs but that didn’t work. Then he tried to lift it off but that also didn’t work. He then fell to the ground and hit the table with a large thud. The Headcrab kept on mauling at his head; Spyro presumed he was dead. He felt un-easy at the sight and moved on into another part of the outpost where a dead grey dragon and a SMG were lying on the ground and a Headcrab shell was stuck in the ground. The hatch on the shell suddenly opened two more Headcrabs. They launched themselves at Spyro and bit into his suit. Spyro whacked them with his crowbar frantically. They both died and Spyro walked past the dead grey dragon and walked on.

Part of the next section of outpost had collapsed possibly due to the bombing. There lay a stagnant, radioactive stream running off from a water runoff pipe. Luckily, there were two rusty girders half buried in the ground that crossed the stream’s path. Spyro stepped onto the girders. However, lying against a corrugated iron wall and beside a brown barrel was a dead dragon. However, it had a Headcrab on its head. The first stage of mutation had happened to the dragon. The skin surrounding the stomach and guts had split which showed the vital organs. Its hands were hideously elongated and covered in blood. The Headcrab had dug right into the dragon’s skull and blood was everywhere on it. Spyro walked past the barrel but suddenly, the dead dragon got up and started moaning. Then a Headcrab shell struck the top of the concrete wall above the runoff. And another dead dragon got up but from in the radioactive stream. They both walked towards Spyro. Spyro shot frantically at the first dead dragon. However, it resisted the bullets. It then lunged at Spyro and clawed him. Spyro shot at the Headcrab on its head. The dead dragon died and the Headcrab fell off to reveal a mauled head. He then shot the second dead dragon in the head a couple of times and it died as well. Spyro walked through a gap in the iron wall and past an already open Headcrab shell were a Headcrab buried its way out of the ground behind the shell and lunged at Spyro. He knocked it in mid-air with the crowbar and the Headcrab was sent flying into a metal fence; it fell to the ground, dead. He walked over to a small wooden plank bridge over a small stream of radioactive sludge. However, blocking his path was a loose electric wire that had snapped from the bombing and dangled over the bridge, twitching from the bursts of electricity coming out of it. Spyro waited for a moment until the wire twitched away from the bridge and over the stream. He dashed over the bridge and made it to the other side unharmed. But suddenly, a dragon zombie crashed through some loose metal panels attached to a metal fence. Spyro quickly drew out his pistol and shot the zombie quickly. Its Headcrab dropped of the zombie and lay dead on the ground. The mauled, bloody dragon fell to the ground, also dead. It had fallen to the ground beside a dead yellow dragon with its back against the metal wall. Spyro then stared at a large, red, open container that surged with electricity. The other end of the electric wire had fallen on top of the container and sent surges of electricity through its metal exterior. He immediately walked into the container, trying to avoid touching any of the container. The base of the container was buried into the ground. Inside the container were two supply crates, a standard wooden crate and a tub of paint. He broke open the two supply crates to find a box of 9mm rounds and two medkits. He didn’t need the medkits but he took what he could of the 9mm rounds. Suddenly, a Headcrab shell crashed just outside the exit of the container and out popped three Headcrabs. However, due to their comparatively small brains, all of them jumped out of the shell and immediately hit the top of the electrified container. Spyro saw this as a nuisance and exited out of the container. He had to cross the same stream again but other a bent, metal, rusty girder and without a dangling wire in the way. But then suddenly, a dragon zombie lifted itself out of the radioactive stream abruptly and lunged at Spyro. He managed to quickly dodge the lunge and he shot the zombie with the pistol. The zombie died but the Headcrab lived. He shot the Headcrab a couple of times and it fell into the radioactive stream. He then crossed over and saw the stream expand out into a large radioactive river. Crossing part of the river was a wooden plank bridge held in place by some concrete bricks. He was about to step onto the planks when a Headcrab shell crashed just behind him causing the ground to shake. He decided however to run along the wooden planks to get avoid the Headcrabs. He knew that something new was in store for him; a certain airboat popped into his mind.

Chapter 17

Spyro walked onto a proper wooden pathway to the side of a canal exit. He walked into the small tunnel to see a blue dragoness filling up an airboat full of fuel. He walked past a metal gate stationed just over the radioactive water at the exit. He stopped just by the dragoness as she lifted the fuel can from the airboat and screwed its cap back on. “Hey, Spyro” she said, “I’ve been hoping you’d show up. Got this airboat all gassed up and ready to go. It’s going to be tough dodging Civil Protection out there in the open, but drive hard and you’ll make it. You’ll find more help up at Station 7, just a few bends up the river. It’s the old red barn. Climb on in and fire her up”. She then rushed to a control wheel that lifted the gate. Spyro climbed into the airboat and started its engine. She turned the wheel and the gate lifted up from the river. “You’d better get going now” said the blue dragoness as she stopped turning the wheel. Spyro agreed and hit the accelerator on the airboat and it sprang into life. He turned the whole vehicle with a handle bar attached the front and accelerated with the button. The airboat engine produced the whirring sound as it sped away from the canal exit outpost and into the radioactive depths of the next part of the canal.

Most of the canal was drained due to an unknown activity and parts of the drained canal bed were tainted with radioactive water. All round him were bits of scrap metal, rubble and other bits of junk washed up onto the drained canal bed. A few large buildings surrounded the desolate canals, but the biggest of them all was the citadel, looming over lot. Spyro quickly sped on towards a large canal gate. It was operated by a control wheel on the right. He span the airboat to face more parts of the concrete runoff and sped up a half-buried, metal ramp onto part of the runoff, across part of a stream and near a pile of wooden crates by the control wheel. But he could hear a squirming sound coming from the crates. He climbed out of the airboat and readied his pistol. He walked around the crates and came across a supply crate next to them, but suddenly a Headcrab lunged out from a gap in the crates towards him. Surprised from the attack, he shot wildly at it and it landed on the concrete ground, dead. He then broke into the supply crate to find a box a 9mm rounds. He took all of the rounds and walked over to the control wheel placed on a wooden platform over the radioactive water. He started to turn the wheel and the gate started to lift. He couldn’t let go of the wheel as the gate would fall back down to the water. After a couple of turns, the gate stopped at the top and the way was made clear. He could let go of the wheel as the gate was firmly held in place. He got back into the air boat and rode back down to the radioactive waters. He raced through the gateway and into the canal passage way. He ran over a supply crate and a box of 9mm rounds in the water. The supply crate broke open revealing a medkit. He picked up both of them and carried on through what looked like the remnants of an outpost. Some wooden crates and wooden poles obstructed his pathway through the canal but he easily drove through them, breaking them in the process. He rode on through the canal and saw what looked like an exit.

Part 4: Water Hazard

Chapter 1

The exit was a steep slope that led down to a new section of the canal. The airboat took off from the edge of the slope and landed on a small stream of clear water. The radioactive water back up didn’t overflow down the slope and into the clean waters. Bits of the canal bed weren’t entirely submerged by the water – a few tufts of grass grew on these banks. Spyro stopped by a gap in the concrete wall to the right. Sprayed on part of the wall was a lambda symbol. He knew this as a hidden stash from his previous encounters. He got out of the airboat and saw a ladder leading up to a grated metal platform above him. It span across the stream and banks to the other side. The middle of the platform was missing and left a big gap. He would have to jump over the gap in order to get to the two boxes of 9mm rounds on the other side. He climbed up the ladder and prepared himself to jump the gap. It wasn’t very big but a mistake could of cost him. He jumped and landed on the other side of the platform. He immediately grabbed all of the rounds out of one box and left the other box since he couldn’t carry any more. He jumped of the platform and onto the top of the airboat. It moved a bit due to the impact and Spyro instantly slid of the sloped rollcage. He got back into the airboat and proceeded out of the tunnel. He crashed through a small wooden barrier but with no harm done.

The red barn that the blue dragoness was talking about was right up ahead, suspended by wooden beams over the large bank. Behind the barn were a couple of houses belonging to some of the dragons that were stationed in the barn. Strangely however, he noticed the dragon in the blue suit again. He stood on a wooden platform held together by wooden beams by the barn. He then started to walk into the barn strangely. Spyro quickly accelerated towards the barn and parked by the concrete wall under the barn. By this time, the strange dragon was well in the barn now. Spyro quickly jumped out of the airboat onto the concrete path. He climbed up a ladder up onto the next level of the concrete wall and ran up some wooden stairs to the barn itself. He came to a stop at the barn’s entrance as the strange dragon was now nowhere to be seen. There were no other exits other than the entrance itself. Spyro didn’t wonder why as there were two dragon zombies. The barn had been shelled and lay waste to Headcrabs. The dragon zombies staggered slowly towards some barrels and clawed them; they went for one barrel each. The hit they caused to sent the barrels flying at Spyro; they both hit him. This caused some pain in Spyro but he tried to shake it off. He quickly shot the zombies in the head and the Headcrabs attached to them dropped off and both dragons fell to the ground, dead. Spyro now had time to think what had happened here.

Protruding out of the concrete floor by some wooden stairs leading to the barn loft was a Headcrab shell. The Headcrabs inside the container had certainly done they’re job. “Station 12, come in. Station 12, do you read” said a voice through a radio on a small wooden cabinet. The only response was the quiet air but only the steaming of the Headcrab shell was to be heard, along with the beeping of the radio. Outside of the barn and leaning outwards on the roof was a large crane with a storage container hanging from its cable. On one end of the container was the lambda symbol. Spyro knew there had to be supplies in the container. He hastily ran up the wooden stairs into the open barn loft. There was a hole in the wooden roof where the Headcrab shell shot through. The loft beams had wooden some wooden planks lying across them. One of these beams was off balance due to one side not lying on a beam. It was held balance on one beam by a large wooden crate that was blocking the way to the other firmly held planks. Spyro crawled on the first beam and plank and to the loose plank. He used the crowbar to knock the crate and loose plank of the beam. Both of them fell down to the hard concrete floor. Spyro crawled onto the next plank and onto two planks close together. Over them was a ladder leading up to the crane. Suddenly however, a Headcrab jumped from the gap above the planks and attempted to attack Spyro. But with quick reactions, he whacked it with the crowbar and it fell to the concrete floor, dead. Spyro climbed up to the crane.

The crane looked like it was operated by a large toothed metal wheel to the right but it was stuck due a rusty brown blue barrel wedged between two of the teeth. Then out over the river flew a stealth black Combine helicopter; it was possible it was the one that attacked Spyro back in the city canals. It hadn’t spotted him but he knew that Civil Protection was still looking for him.

its the game its based on, half life 2 that has a bad in-game story, its the cutscenes that are good, not the game itself
