So, here I am. With you. All in the same boat. Now what?

Hell if I know. But what I do know is, my wife hates me (ish) and the Skylanders, kind of.

Quote:
They take up space, you spend to much money on them, it's stupid. They're toys

She gets it, but doesn't.

[waynes world dedlee oop dedlee oop dedlee oop]

We got in the game late with giants, mid-release. My son inquired, I obliged, we played ... and played ... and played. It was spectacular. I started learning more, researching more, taking "unexpected" trips with the boys more. Hunting. I was hooked.

We went every weekend, looking and searching. First in line, searching for new characters, un-boxing with employees to ensure we got what we came for or what we could find as an overlooked +1 for our collection. It went on, and on, and on ... then things like this happened ...

[User Posted Image]

So, here were are, thousands of dollars later (I am), still playing. Still collecting. Still being given the shifty evil eye.

I'm sure like most, what was once a harmless gesture turned into a fateful obsession. Fear not, you aren't alone. Alas I wanted to share my plight, and embrace our pilgrimage, together. Collecting. Informing. Being hated.

(Disclaimer - * Im no hardcore collector. Just a simple man , with a new hobby.)

Please share your collecting infancy and rivalry here.

HAHAHAHA!

I started out looking for a release for my stress dealing with an intensely competitive graduate program, a distraction that wasn't too time consuming or difficult. I had seen the skylanders around when the first game came out and thought it was the strangest most idiotic idea I'd ever seen. But then I one day decided what the heck while standing in a Best Buy about a month before Giants came out and picked up Spyro's Adventure for only $30. I thought I'd get a good laugh playing with the starter kit for a day or so............. and now here I am a broke graduate student finding ways to earn extra money or selling off stuff on ebay for cash to buy more Skylanders and it is now the ONLY real distraction I have that completely takes my mind off school for a short while, especially since I can pick it up and play for 20 mins or so as time is really precious and critically controlled/scheduled. smilie

Who says skylanders is just for the kiddies? I'm TERRIBLE at video games (my boyfriend cannot stand playing with me cause I keep dying and slowing him down). I cannot even get through a level of Mario. I also don't find video games all that interesting. They tend to lose my attention after only a few minutes. But for some reason Skylanders has really clicked with me. I can pick it up and put it down at will without worrying about "save points" or "missions", it's not overly violent and has a creative and humorous story I find keeps my interest, and I CAN'T DIE!!!! Though I probably go through 20 figures on a single level hahahaha. I hope Activision keeps them coming for another few years until I get through the PhD program... or I may lose my mind!

(I do play tennis 3-4 times a week and it's definitely much better stress relief than a video game, as I'm a huge advocate of getting off the couch and being productive, but this time of year is expensive, cold, and always raining smilie )

It all started when my niece brought her copy of Giants and bag of landers over to my house. Her mom and dad loved the game, and so they had started their own collection. Naturally my niece played it with them. She was really insistent that I play with her too, but I really wasn't interested in it. I was obsessed with Dragon's Dogma at the time, and couldn't be bothered. My niece is very persistent though, and she finally wrangled me into taking Dragon's Dogma out and playing Giants with her. I was hooked after that. I bought my own copy of Giants, then SA and now SF and so many figures I'm running out of space/storage options for my small room and I still want more. I've spent waaaay too much on this franchise lol.

Sadly for my niece, her parents have moved on to Disney Infinity and no longer play the game with her. She isn't very fond of DI, and isn't very good at playing Skylanders by herself. So I let her come over with her landers on weekends that I'm off work and we have a blast! So glad she introduced the series to me.

I also showed up a little late to the party. Walking through Toys R Us one day my son ran over to the Giants display and asked about the Skylanders. Said they seemed pretty cool and that he wanted them for Christmas. Bought the starter pack at Walmart last year on Black Friday (it was the last one on the shelf), picked up Legendary Bouncer and Granite Crusher and a few other figures that I found on sale before Christmas. Really didn't know what I was doing at the time. Picked up a couple figures dirt cheap during Amazon's lightning deals only to discover that they were for the older game (which I had no idea about at first). My son loved the game when he opened it up for Christmas. Ended up getting a bunch of the figures at JC Penney when they were clearing them out. Bought a couple new starter packs there for next to nothing, as well. Ended up buying Spyro's Adventure really cheap as well. The worst part about the collecting was trying to find a Darklight Crypt. I actually remember seeing quite a few of them in the weeks before last Christmas. At the time, I didn't realize that the Adventure Packs opened up new content in the Giants game so I didn't pick it up. When I realized that it did, I went out searching for all four adventure packs. Found the other three without much trouble, but then searched everywhere without luck for Darklight Crypt. Finally bought it on Ebay. Less than a week after receiving it, found it at a Target. I bought that copy and sold it on Ebay to come out even. My son and I have a blast playing the game. My daughter likes to play now too, so it is something that we all can enjoy playing together.

I came, as many, late. After the Giants release.
Looking for something to keep my kids entertained I decided that I would get a cheap SSA (knowing the second game was out). I picked up the PC version (disk and portal only, no figures) on eBay and a cheap triple pack on Amazon (Double Trouble, Whirlwind and Drill Sargent).
Loved it but decided the PC was not the place to play. Bought what I thought would be the cheap option of a disk only game of Giants for the Wii.
Had to start buying figures online and as singles, ended up paying more than if I had just bought both Wii Starter packs at retail smilie Got both SSA and Giants 3DS versions (again "cheap" on eBay, missing important figures ).
Collection started growing, ended up with Battlegrounds and then Swap Force. (a few spare portals from ebay too!)
Wish I had just bought SSA and Giants Starter packs on the 360 to start with. Thinking I could "get away" with not needing the starter pack figures etc I ended up having to spend more. Finally picked up Giants 360 game only on eBay recently so I can play with better graphics than the Wii version smilie

I started off buying the game so I would have something in common with my little nephew. I've been in this franchise since the start with S:SA, but I came in about 6 months after release and struggled to find figures. My wife (who I SWEAR has NO hobbies) looks at my collection and rolls her eyes. She's also an accountant so she immediantly starts adding in her head and focuses on the insane money I've already spent.

I tell her to be happy I don't go after chase variants lol, and I've shown her how much they go for on Ebay. She can't get past or understand what grown @#% people are willing to pay for a kids toy. My daughter is 2yrs old right now. She's still too young to really play the game but she loves to switch out the figures for daddy (rather I'm ready or even want to switch) and see them pop up on the screen. I can tell I have a future skylanders addict in the making. Of course this thought terrifies my wife hehehe!!!

Skylanders and tattoos are my two big obsessions right now and I got at least a $1000.00 plus into each.

I hadn't even HEARD of Skylanders until last year in December. I ran across them in a Gamestop store set up just for the Giants game at a Mall. The employee said to me "If you like Diablo, you will love it". Wasn't convinced. A buddy of mine said he had played the first and was on the Giants game with his son and that I, like They would love it. Still at the Mall area I went to the TRU and found the Starter Pack for $50 with the portal and the packs at Buy 1 Get 1 75% off. Some other "collector" was there and explained the difference in the games, the powers, which character are more "collectable", etc. I bought a number of Giants as well as SSA and Giants singles plus all the 3 packs just in case I liked the game. I took the game home and it sat for TWO weeks unopened in a corner. Finally opened the Starter Pack and played the first levels and was hooked. Slowly I began to open the packs until I had one of each element so I could "finish" the whole game. By then I started hunting down the missing SSA and the rest of Giants as they were released. Not including chase variants, I have every Skylander release with the exception of the Darklight Crypt set. I have however not used every character in a game, much to my surprise.

Though for Swap Force I am sticking with just new characters and no reposes, I still enjoy the hunt. My youngest daughter enjoys playing the female characters in the game. My oldest calls me when she runs across one she thinks I might need. The wife, she doesn't mind as long as she gets to fix up the home as she likes (ie Bed Bath Beyond shopping spree).

My store is to long to post, but short version. started at the very beginning collecting and playing with son got SSA and all the figures as they came out. Then son completed the game in about 3 days, I was very disappointed I was like REALLY already. Well after that I started playing and it took me several days the complete then i started seeing that there were these figures called chase variants and i had to find them.So started my collecting obsession went on to find alot of the variants then came SG and again finding variants and now SSF and once again the chase is on and so many years later our collection is well over 230 figures/pieces later and over $3000. When my wife says anything about our collection and the dollar amount i just say i could go back to my other hobby (Geocaching) if you don't know what it is, it is a modern day treasure hunting outdoor GPS game. She is the one that wanted me to start play geocaching so i had to get all the gear which at that time a handheld GPS cost around $900 for a good one then my own small laptop to go with me another $500 then the gas to travel all over 4-5 states to find these caches. Then i started collecting what they call geocoins/trackables which i still own many of those and if you think a figure is expensive some of my coins range from $20-$90 each and i have probably now around 300. So she says nothing when we want another figure LOL. One thing I have done was sell all my geocaching gear and now selling the geocoins and such to fund the skylanders adventure hunt. So that is the short story.

My skylander story:

I never heard of the game until December of 2011, and my cousin introduced it to me when we were talking, I was originally only interested in camo, warnado, zap, bash, and drobot, and I planned to stop my collection after I got them, but around late may, I was embarrassed in school for having pics of zap and bash on my phone in the package, and I detested skylanders for a few weeks, then I found a reason to get my rep back, blame it on my little bro, and it worked!!! On my birthday a few weeks later I got my first skylanders, bash, drobot, dark spyro, ignitor, and stealth elf. I wanted the 3ds version cuz I thought it was the same as the console version, I was wrong! The next day I stumbled across camo, warnado, and zap in a GameStop, my wanted list was complete, the next day I discovered prism break, Cynder, Zook, sunburn, drill sergeant, wrecking ball, sonic boom, and whirlwind on the skyalnders website, I started collecting again, the next week I bought the console version on my way down To Florida during the sale at TRU (when it was $30 off) and I got it along with whirlwind drill sergeant and double trouble (who I detested at first, but he grew on me after a while.) by the time July was over, my collection was nearly complete, by September 4th, the day before my sophomore year stared, I had finally gotten wham shell, my SSA collection was complete, and my goal to complete my collection before summer vacation was over was completed! Then Giants came around. Finished the collection after nearly a year of collecting. (Still want Royal Double Trouble though!) And now we all face the Swap Force Cycle. Mine is going wonderfully so far, have nearly everyone I want so far and I'm ready for wave 3!

I would like to thank the now-defunct Nintendo Power for introducing this to me. I absolutely love it.

It all started when I saw a little review on one of their pages, showing Dark Spyro's figure. I then vowed to get it.

I started with a FEW characters at first (Chop Chop, Terrafin, and others), then the addiction set in.
My mother sped from store to store looking for them, grabbing any ones I didn't have.
As soon as I heard about Giants, I was looking forward to getting it.

I got up at 6:00 AM and went to Walmart, and there was my first ever encounter with a chase variant, Rock Zook. Sadly, it was also my first bout with a scalper. I got who I needed, and he took everything they had.
Went to ToysRUs, and found Rock Whirlwind. By then, I had everything I needed.

I had vowed to get every single Giants character, INCLUDING variants. This was a sore mistake.

During Christmas, I found YET ANOTHER chase variant; Clear Stealth Elf. I vowed to get ONE of each S:SA variant. This was a worse mistake, but in a way, a good mistake.

After finding out about the foreign market for these guys, I gave it a spin, buying a few prototypes. Sold a prototype Ninjini for $500 (bidding), and a set of Sidekick prototypes (And a Drill Sergeant) for $550. Woo hoo!

And now, after getting almost every single rare figure, and getting SWAP Force, I'm not stopping anytime soon! smilie

Enough bragging, let's get to the parents.

My parents dislike mostly everything about it. They can't handle the "wild goose chase" that these things can be. The money is a different story. My parents are very generous (I thank them for that), and they get them if they're too expensive for me. I've had many arguments about these things.

Finally, if it wasn't for Spyro (and Crash!), I would most likely not be here.

Overall, this game is an awesome experience, albeit.. very expensive.

I originally only planned to get one of each undead and call it that. Then I got Camo and played with him in Universe. So when Giants came out I picked it up on Black Friday, enjoyed the game, then started getting the figures. Now I have a complete Spyro's set, an almost-complete Giants set minus three lightcores, and was going after the variants.

Well, I guess THAT didn't work out on the last front, did it?

For me, I can thank Gamestop for getting me into this. My nephew started off with skylanders, which was something I always said no to. Eventually my brother in law got into it and brought it into his home. Now I had the both of them telling me that I would really enjoy this game, yet I still said no. I had no interest in spending all that money on a game that involved me buying each character. I even played some with my nephew, found the game fun but still refused to buy it over what a cash monster it would be.

And then, Gamestop had their Skylander day back in June or July. They said I could get the Giants game for $30. I figured it would be ok to buy a game for that price rather than the ridiculous $75. I figured I could make do with what I had gotten that day, the starter set of Tree Rex, Cynder and Jet Vac. I bought a Polar Whirlwind just because it was there and seemed special, yet I hadn't much of a clue what I was buying. Then I found out that when I would really need to enjoy the game to 100% was one of each element. So I made the mistake of telling my brother in law that I wanted to find some that were awesome to fill out my elemental needs. That's when I found out about variants, and how Polar was a special one. Now I wanted variants and special ones... until he then told me he had every single one but a Ghost Roaster because he was too expensive to find. Well I made it my mission to get GR for my Undead one, and Boomer for my tech (after watching him play as Boomer). The need to collect got the best of me, from the good old days of catching every single pokemon. It was exciting riding around to stores so late into the game and trying to hunt down figures that just couldn't be found. I did a pretty good job of it too, only using the secondary market for a few that I just needed to have... and most of the variants. Luckily, I have no wife to be angry at me. Though I do wish I had a kid so that I could blame the ridiculous amount of skylanders sitting around the house on him. My friends saw my collection before SSF came out, and I believe their exact words were that I was a skylander fiend. So as much as SSF doesn't come as a great enjoyment to me like Giants did, I'm still out there on release day getting variants. All I can say is this: Darn you Pokemon!!!

Here's how it went.
January 6th 2012:

Friend: Hey there Nicolas! What did you get for Christmas?
Me: Mario Kart 7 and stuff, you?
Friend: Have you heard of Skylanders? I got it!
Me: Yeah I've seen it on TV, seems pretty boring.
Friend: Don't be like that! Come over to my house and we'll play it!
Me: No.
Friend: Please?
Me: Urgh, fine, I'll be there in an hour.

Then, when I got there, I saw that he was in Troll Factory, back then he had the original Starter Pack Characters, as well as the Flameslinger/Stump Smash/Drobot 3 Pack. I was in love. How he even got the characters I don't even know, some of you might remember the craze that went on until about April, where stock was VERY limited.
Then, about 1 week later, I said "Dad can I buy Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure?"
He said yes immediately, which surprised me. I then got the game and the Wrecking Ball/Stealth Elf/Sonic Boom 3 Pack.
Then in April, shortly after my birthday I found the marvel that is this website.

Mine is an interesting story, which I am sure some of you have seen.

One day, my dad announces that there is this game called Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. He tells me that he ordered a House Party Pack for it(FYI: A house party pack is essentially a pack the company sends for free to promote the product). It would include multiples all of the main triples and singles for the first wave (Boomer, Voodood, Prism Break, Drobot, Flameslinger, Stump Smash, Chop Chop, Eruptor, and Bash), as well as the storter of our choice. We get to keep the starter figures(Trigger Happy, Gill Grunt, and Spyro), the game, and everything else. We had to give away the other figures as party favors though. Anyway, me and my brother were entranced. We never heard or thought of toys coming to life before. We couldn't wait for the big box to arrive. And thanks to our dad, the madness began.

The Package actually arrived a day before release, so we were happy. Our dad kept us from opening the figures and the starter, so we could only look at them. They were nicely detailed so that had me hooked from the start. The day after we got it, our dad let us open the starter, as the party wasn't until the weekend. We loved the game. We played until the fourth chapter that day (Ah... fond memories).

On the day of the party, our cousins loved it. We let them each choose a figure of their choice. I was actually kind of surprised at one choice. One of my cousins was a little two year old girl at the time. She chose BOOMER! (Still shocks me to this day...).

After the party ended, there was one single leftover figure: Flameslinger. I then started making plans to purchase the rest of the figures. And that is when my collecting journey began.

One other tidbit. I noticed that no one else has posted a story of getting a house party pack, so if you actually did, let me know smilie.

Me: Hey, that's Spyro!
Hey Mom, can I get that?
Mom: Put it on your Christmas list.

Christmastime...

You know what happened.

THE END.

Fun fact: my brother got me an Eruptor to go with the game. He hated Skylanders at first, but younger brothers are always interested in what their older brothers are doing, so he played the game with me and got hooked. He didn't have any of his own characters, so I had to lend him Gill and the Eruptor he got me. I bet that was his master plan...

My story isn't too exciting.

When Spyro's Adventure was being promo'd before launch, I thought it looked fun, but planned to avoid it, knowing what a money sink it would be.

The day it came out, I went to Toys R Us. They had Buy Two, Get One free on all video games. When we were there, there was NO ONE at the Skylanders display. Like, no one in the aisle at all. I was looking at some of the figures when my wife asked about it. Told her about it and she was like "that sounds cool - you should get it if you want it." I said no, that I knew how much money it was going to end up costing in the long run. She said it was okay and if I wanted it, to get it.

So, I got a cart and started loading one of everything into it. She saw how much stuff I was putting in... "You don't have to get it all now, do you?"

"Well, it *is* B2G1... and this game is going to be huge at Christmas and I have no idea which characters are going to be hard to get later on..."

She looked around the aisle and doubted my claim about the game being a big seller, but couldn't argue with the B2G1 pricing... And that's that. smilie

Mine started in Feb. of this year. I bought a used copy of giants a local guy. Then it started.....I was obsessed! Picked up SA then started going store to store to find them all. My wife got annoyed, so i would buy them and hide them from her. She found out and was pissed to say the least. She ripped me a new one then felt bad and the next day went and bought me one i didn't have. I have Three wonderful kids9,5 and 3 that love it. Now my beautiful wife has a few characters she likes. i got in it right after granite crusher was discontinued. from then i have stayed on it and get variants as soon as they come out. The toyrus crew knows me well and saves them for me now.
---
I have an unopened molten hot dog,s2 Bash,QDRS,HFR and flocked STTh . Looking for granite crusher, polar whirlwind, volcanic vault and other rares.

Lets go back to SSA (Oct 2011)
My son played the display in Walmart every time we went in. I too saw the money pit and tried to avoid it even thou he wanted it so badddd, but by the middle of January, I had over $300 from Christmas and extra $$ from Computer jobs. I had no plans for the $$$ so I finally broke down and got SSA and now 3 games and 189 figures later (This includes the Magic/Adventure/Variant items), still collecting and waiting for Wave 3 SSF.

Sometime after H.Sandy to get out( as we had no electric) we went to the mall and jcpennys to get new cloths for our son. He showed me skylander giants and wanted it and I said we will see. I just looked at it and the price and nothing more. Later on in early dec my sister -in-law wanted to get one last gift for ur son for xmas, i mentioned to my wife to tell her about that skylander game so she went to gamestop and got it for the ps3.

12/25/12 is the day my son got the game.
12/26/12 is the day we played and I got hooked, i then also looked online about the game sometime that week and realized how many figures there were and that I actually heard of spyro adventure the yr prior but I cant recall where but i remember thinking it was some new spyro kiddy game.

1-15-13- by this date I had gotten most of what was out and started hunting for SSA series 1s. I bought darklight crypts for us all at a toysrus outlet in deep park ny (thank god i got it then), they had tons of them at the time but they were the only ones that did. I never did find boomer and tried for many months after till i got him used later on.

Somewhere in mid April i decided to collect a sealed set and basically didn't open my SSA set i had and ended up recollecting the lost 8 i opened. With Giants I did the same. So far swap force too. I had them up on the wall till last week when I had to take them down, thou SSA is still up and giants and swap in boxes.

Wife looked collecting them but hasn't played much. She complains thou about me having a sealed set but she lets it go as she collects disney dolls lately so i have my thing and she has hers

SSA. Heard about the game through various news sites, thought it was worth taking a look at. Picked up the 3DS Starter on launch, brother got 360. Then picked up Whirlwind and Drill Sergeant due to them being Tesco and ASDA timed exclusives at the time. Then I just got one of each of the dragons.

Giants, waited till the game was on sale to pick it up, and got a bunch of figures preowned/on sale. (Again, just the dragons)

With Swap Force, gonna wait till it's on sale. Only got the Enchanted Hoot Loop, due to being a variant.

Waiting on Polar Whirlwind and S2 Drobot getting a UK release, as they are the last two Giants dragons I need.

Technically, Whirlwind is a Unicorn-Dragon Hybrid.

Kudos to you, OP, for the Wayne's World reference. :D

Nobody actually hates me for being in my 30s and collecting Skylanders, but my roommates (rightfully) poke some good natured fun at me for my addiction. :D Given a recent diagnosis of PTSD, I think most people who know me are just glad there's something I can sort of enjoy at present, even if most of them don't understand why I get so excited over these toys.

Started playing universe. Thought it was cool. Got SSA for christmas, and Flameslinger triple. Giants. Waited for what felt like a decade... Early morning dash. Turned into like a 5 hour shopping spree. Swap Force. Spent easily £100 on pre-orders alone. £300+ and here I am. Barely a teenager...

Lucky for my kid's, my wife and I are O.C.D. and have to have "all or nun" so we made the choice together to jump in and collect these for our son (my daughter's is MH and get's a little more pricey) we almost always go together as a family and/or send each other text to show what we found before buying anything so that it's a family choice and not one or the others obsession - but that's just how we justify it, to each their own

If all you can see is the grammar errors, Pyrofer, you are going to have a miserable time everywhere on the Internet. :D It's not a big deal anymore unless it's in a book (and this is coming from a writer and former college English major).

Sorry, I am in a strange mood after a week or so of being (actually physically) sick, as well as other less pleasant things.
I was trying to be funny (I failed, I know) and also hopefully educate at the same time.

Goodness, I hope you feel better soon. :)

Humor in text only can be tricky. All I really know is that most people old enough to be married with kids can get persnickety about being corrected on anything. XD

Fixed, pyrofer

Hope you feel better quick cause I keep the site up but stay so busy that I just respond in passing and then move on to what ever I was doing without ever sitting down and the last thing I could care about is proper grammar on the internet. So I will re-post my original comment so that it gets viewed for what it is ( an on-topic comment related to what the OP had to say )

On a lot of forums I would have been quite vicious about correcting that post, but here is not the place for that sort of thing.
I tried to be funny and failed. Nevermind, move on smilie

It has bee interesting hearing peoples stories and reassuring to hear how many people play as a family or are 18+ and playing.

It IS a kids game after all but I guess our inner child needs to play games too smilie

Scion!!!! :D

Anyway... :D Hee, Skylanders came up when I went to see my therapist today. We were talking about me not really having a childhood or fun toys and how it's nice to have this one thing (collecting Skylanders toys) that's kind of joyful regardless of the target demographic. :) A good kids' game is good for kids of any age. :)
