Skylanders originally going to be a darker game (M-rated even!) [CLOSED]

From this very link:
http://www.joystiq.com/2011/06...bes-in-toyland/

Despite its name, Toys for Bob didn't come at this as a toy company. Reiche is an old-school gamer, and his company has a solid history of development, including the legendary Star Control titles and 1996's Pandemonium. In fact, when Activision first approached Toys for Bob about doing a Spyro title, Reiche and his company originally aimed for something much darker than Spyro has ever been before.

"Let's blow Spyro out," Reiche said at the time. "Let's raise up the age range for him, let's appeal to the kids over 16 up into young adults, let's make it tough and bloody. And we did all of this concept work and just lost our enthusiasm. That wasn't Spyro. That isn't what our passion was about. It was much more joyous and active, and so we sort of stepped back from that."

Never made another topic regarding the Skylander game, other than continuing to maintain the sticky topic. This sounds like worth discussing...originally going to be a darker-oriented game eh?

Discuss. BTW, I will try updating the sticky topic as soon as I can. A lot more stuff coming up from E3 this week. oo'

Interesting indeed, ISO. Spyro, in an M-rated like game? Could be laughable, if not ludicrous. Still it would show that Spyro is growing up with his fanbase instead of remaining as a kid friendly game. TV-tropes said it themselves that it would be better if Spyro was able to say some more edgy words instead of being water-downed by the censorship.

Not something I would agree on, but it could work. . .

Hmm, maybe not, I got this horrible feeling it would have been a bigger knock off of DMC / GoW then anything if they went in that direction.

Suddenly... suddenly Skylanders seems epic.

This would definitely have crushed my childhood. O.o

(Or did they make that up to make the current game seem better...?)

Unless you're referring to Dark Spyro from LoS (Which I hope you're not), if it was M rated; it would most likely be darker than an E10 game.

I wanna see this concept work, if just for kicks...

Also, @Zackieo: A game that grows with its fanbase shouldn't grow at all, IMO. It should stay as it was when the fans liked it best, and best represent what they consider to be (insert franchise/character name here). That is especially true for Spyro the dragon, given the passion and nostalgia of many of his fans. But that is of course just my Opinion.

No way. Dark spyro(the website and character) is awsome smilie. I'm talking about the game be dark enough to be M-rated. I can see teen rated but, not M.

I kind of think an M-Rated Spyro game would be better because it is more serious. TLoS was the only serious Spyro we got.

I would like to see an M-rated Spyro game also. I'm really into those games for some reason and I'd like to see what it'd be like, and also what Fireball said.

But I think it should stay light-hearted for the other fans, but one day I have a feeling it will get darker.

agreed with both
we already had an attempt on a ''darker/more serious'' spyro game (aka the LoS series) and It just didn't work at all(IMO) and should've been its own new franchise without any connections to Spyro.
An M-rated Spyro game?seriously Activision? wow...
I'm atleast glad these developers realised that Spyro should stay in that ''lighthearted fantasy adventure'' sort of atmosphere...
anyways..I dig the designs of these worlds :3

^This.

I can see a T-rating, but that's also pushing it a bit. E or E10+ works better...
HIR Diamond Sparx Gems: 9034
#23 Posted: 00:57:54 09/06/2011
Still, the Legend games were trying for too serious of a tone for the E10+ rating they got. Someone should remake the trilogy with a higher rating. <.<;

Better suggestion: SCREW RATING VIDEO GAMES. <.>

someone should remake the legend series with free roaming and more levels to explore like the classics. But yeah a T rating i could see it working but M? i think thats totally going the wrong way too, its like barney having a dagger and killing people lol, something along the lines of getting to the basics like sly cooper and ratchet and clank have been doing all this time and doing well at best is what they should do with spyro.

*Bump* I read the first four chapters. It's a pretty good fan fiction. 145,868 words is a lot, that's like more than the longest book I've ever read! It's like Harry Potter-sized! smilie But the point is, if this author was able to make this long of an epic story that would be considered an M-rated game, why can't Activision?

It can still be happy and lighthearted, but still mature.

Take Conker's Bad Fur Day for example. It's M-rated, has bad language, violence and gore, and sexual references, but it is all about hilarious jokes and wacky suprises. And yet, it's a 3D platformer, with colourful worlds.

If they made a Spyro game that played like the Classics, but had the mature, sick humour of Conker, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Also, just so ya know, Conker's first game was in fact a "kids" game.
