I randomly downloaded another iphone app last week: Dragons World [sic]. I waited a few days to start it out but when I did I was very surprised to find it so similar to Lost Islands. The first thing that hits you is the splash loading screen--There is a pink (with shades of purple) dragon and a hot air balloon with a pilot that looks like a human Flynn. The initial starting island and sanctuary are just like modded graphics from Lost Islands (or another similar game?). There is a hot air balloon that parks alongside the floating island. There are waterfalls to look at and various rocks and trees to remove. You have to make little square areas grow crops. Just try it if you like Lost Islands. It shows you a lot of ways that Lost Islands could improve if they were even more similar. First of all it gave me the idea for Arena Battles. The Dragons World game has a battles area where you can put up a team against other players' teams (not real-time). It would be awesome if you could pit your best team of Skylanders against other players in Lost Islands in the same way.
My name on there is the same as Lost Islands: Odous7 --and I need friends!
Other comparisons:
Better: Moving objects & buildings is easier, more intuitive, and there is more granularity
Worse: No gridlines --perhaps because the grid portions would be too small
Better: Graphics, it makes Lost Islands look downright cartoonish.
Worse: In some spots, cartoonish is good, Dragons World is cartoonish, but its just better. The grass has more texture to it.
Better: Purchase obstacles as decorations. This is something I suggested long ago for Lost Islands. Some of those things we had to remove to expand onto new islands were pretty cool!
Worse: Initial costs are oppressive. It was a long time ago but I remember the early Lost Islands quests rewarding you with enough gold to repay you for all the junk you had to buy.
Better: Breeding -- yeah, this concept doesn't work in Skylanders per se, but it would be neat if there was some kind of crafting you could do, like mixing crops, or putting different elemental combos in a new sanctuary to produce either new objects or exotic rewards like gold & energy together.
Better: Perks -- as your dragons level up, you can pick different "perks" for them to have. This could have been implemented in Lost Islands by letting you choose a Skylander to be more gold/time/energy/xp efficient as desired.
Worse: No companion system-- not that I've seen yet anyway--but I don't think there is one. Companions in Lost Islands are like universal perks, but it would be cool if there was something more rewarding about leveling up Skylanders. There are "amplifiers" that might be universal buffs but I'm not sure yet.
Worse: Leveling up through feeding. Lost Islands' mechanic of leveling up through missions and activities is better than Dragons World leveling. There are activities for the Dragons to do but so far I don't see anything that they get out of it. There are however some sort of battle ranks. I only have one so far.
Better: Ad-hoc gold collection. No waiting for the end of cycles to collect gold from production centers (habitats). Tap to collect any time.
Worse: Kingdom XP seems harder to come by. So far I just see it coming from removing obstacles, harvesting food, and quests.
Better: Leaderboard and General Achievement awards in addition to specific quests. These are minor to me but make sense in the Skylanders world and Lost Islands would be slightly better with them.
Same: Daily Rewards look & feel. Two types of roads. Elements (most of them are and look the same). Decorations (many are the same).
