I didn't find a topic about this, so I decided to make one.

According to sources in Kiev, 2000 russian soldiers were transported to Ukraine yesterday (also tanks, by some vague reports). Two ukrainian airports have been occupied by the newly arrived forces. Many western nations have publicly expressed their worries about the situation.

You can find more info on the news all around the internet, there are also some videos on youtube. I wouldn't trust all sources completely though, as some reports may be exaggerated.

What do you guys think about the situation?

From what I know, so far Russia has publicly denied sending any troops to Ukraine. The combat uniforms of the transported soldiers are completely devoid of any national symbols, but they use russian military equipment and speak russian (also widely spoken in Ukraine).

But, as it turns out...

..Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia just received an authorization from the head of the Russian parliament to use the military forces of the Russian Federation on ukrainian soil, and has sent 6000 troops to their military base in Crimea.

An armed conflict isn't what they're looking for, but the situation might escalate.

I've seen a couple of guesses as to what their motives are, and it seems logical to me that Russia is simply trying to gain control of Crimea to be able to dictate the price of the gas that flows to Ukraine through that area. That could lead to an energy crisis in Ukraine which would probably force them to work by Russia's rules.

21.41, ukrainia's acting president, Oleksandr Turtshynov has placed the Armed forces of Ukraine on high alert.

Ukrainia's prime minister claims that any military action from the behalf of Russia would lead to war, and all connections to Moscow would immediately be cut. He then demanded that the Russian troops be returned to their base at Sevastopol.

Meanwhile the UN hopes for immediate stabilisation of the situation. I've read that UN's president, Ban Ki-Moon either will call or has personally called Vladimir Putin.

Edit: United Nations Security Council just started their second meeting today. The meeting was called by Great Britain.

Apparently Ukraine has asked the United Nations Security Council to stop Russia's interference inside their territory.
Putin, on the other hand, probably feels that he has invested far too much on Viktor Janukovitsh to let Ukraine wrestle free of Russian influence now. The last thing they want to happen is for Ukraine to join NATO now.

I can't say for sure, but I hope that they're just trying to put some pressure on the ukrainian goverment and protect the russian civilians living in Ukraine.
Because, If they're really looking to occupy Crimea this gets pretty serious.

The only way this'll "go nuclear" is that the situation escalates into a larger conflict. Right now there's just a lot of tension in Ukraine and the UN is putting a lot of pressure on Vladimir Putin.

It's not even a war yet, and there's a big chance it'll never become one.

But, tbh there are nukes on alert right now. They're always ready to fire 24/7 even when there's no trouble around, and now Russia is sending thousands of soldiers inside Ukraine's borders, against the wishes of the ukrainian goverment and the UN.

I'm kinda bugged how people are immediately screaming "OH GOSH WORLD WAR III IS UPON US WE'RE GOING NUCLEAR" when only one side of the conflict has nuclear weapons and wouldn't think of using it on a country that they're trying to be friends with.

I don't fully understand the situation but I'm not exactly going to scream war right away.

According to public news President Obama and President Putin had a phone call earlier today, where Obama expressed his worries for Russia's apparent plan to possibly attack Ukraine.
Edit: President Obama also told President Putin that he has broken international laws.

The Ukrainian goverment has asked NATO to look into any possible means to protect Ukraine's sovereingty. They're getting pretty worried.

On the frequencies, a lot of Russian chatter. Can't tell if military, but some EAM's have been flying around all night. Also I've heard some french transmissions scheduling plane take-offs.
Nothing really big like what some people claimed to hear earlier. I think those were just wild rumors.

Things are not looking any better in Ukraine today.

- Crimea is now effectively under Russian rule. Over 15000 russian soldiers have been deployed there.

- I've seen of reports of russian soldiers stealing weapons from Ukraine's military.

- The russian forces in Crimea have started a media war to do a smear-job on the ukrainian goverment and urge the people of Ukraine to start supporting Vladimir Putin.

- The Prime minister of Ukraine accuses Russia of starting a war. Ukraine's army is mobilizing, and all recervists (approx. 1 000 000) have been called to service.

- The ukrainian parliament has asked for international support to protect it's nuclear power plants.

- Russia publicly blames the European Union for causing the riots of the past months in Ukraine.

The good news is, not a single shot has yet been fired between the two armed forces.

Hey, I live 500km from Russia. Don't worry, you don't have it so bad. Your country is really powerful too, so no-one would start a fight with you just like that.

If this turns to war, I'll be called away for refreshive training and sent to guard the border.
