Neither pokemon nor paper mario are RPGs, though they do have elements of one.

Wikipedia says otherwise.

By this standard most games that don't fit into another main catagory (FPS, platformer, puzzle) could potentially fit into an RPG.

Yeah but Wikipedia says quite a few things that aren't true. Also, yes I know what RPG stands for however as a game type it has specific elements that makes it one, like western RPGs are 1 player against the world using the AD&D rule system that never varies. JRPGs are different in that they have depth and multiple player character teams and play by a similar set of rules. Even when the combat is different across all of them they still use the same rule set. Yes there are other elements like leveling up and picking your own upgrades, shopping for armours, weapons and medicine (though this can be done in some Action/Adventure games too). But none of that matters as the whole point to an RPG is to find out about your character and the world by travelling it and having adventures. Which rules out Pokemon as you never really find out anything about your character as the game is about the pokemon and he/she never personally levels up. Now Paper Mario is a Mario game with a few RPG elements but that's all.

Well, Nintendo calls them RPGs, the video game industry calls them RPGs, and since they're obviously not platformers, shooters, racers or puzzle games. I'm going to stick with my choices. ^.^
