It happens. For me it happens any time iTunes interrupts the process for any reason. Mandatory password change, transaction borked. Update expiry date of credit card, transaction borked. Request a refund thru iTunes and buy it again. Use support chat with iTunes and they can do a refund on the spot.

You are so correct. Update of the card's expiry caused it.
