Female Characters! [CLOSED]

So... the Spyro world has more male characters than females. But that's not a huge deal. Not to me, at least. I do wish that more than one, extremely "feminized" (at least in the last game) character was prominent in the LoS universe, but the original world had it's fair share of great females (Sheila and Bianca and Ember, to name a few), and the newer Skylanders games as well.

So, what are your opinions on the female characters? Not separately (like, I'm not particularly asking for a whole post specifically about Elora), but like... as a whole?

Honestly, I've always absolutely loved the female characters, ESPECIALLY in the first universe. There was a huge diversity of females and their gender didn't play a huge role in who they were. I mean, yeah, Bianca and Ember were love interests, but that doesn't in any way make them less great, imo. In fact, Ember's entire personality was basically her crush on Spyro, and while some found it annoying, I thought it was really cute and funny and she made a great little addition to AHT.

I'd love to hear other opinions?? smilie

I always like to see female characters in videogames. In the whole Spyro series they were just a few female ones, but they were awesome, some of them cute, others good and evil!!

Well yeah but the topic is obviously dead or long gone since it's not active?? It's not like I just started a conversation that's already going on. There's nothing wrong with rediscussing a topic. New things may pop up and opinions might be changed and new people might decide to join in. No need to be rude...???

The original female characters were great, especially Bianca and Elora.

I also loved how YOTD and ANB had a female villain, and both villains were really great. For some reason I prefer female villains over male villains, and I wish there were more of them.

I really like the female characters of the Spyro franchise. They're diverse and treated like people on the whole, which cannot be said of most games.

I think that the female characters are quite ok in Spyro game franchise. They seem to be strong, confident and individualistic characters to me. Especially Elora seems to be very strong and confident since she seems to be the leader of the anti-Ripto movement. Although I think that romantic relationship things etc. in which they are included are bit forced and don't feel naturally developed (maybe Bianca is the exception of this rule and Cynder because of simple purposes of genetic reproduction).

Except some of the NPCs,though - the mermaid girl and Nanny from AHT come to mind, though I really don't like remembering the dialogue from them.

To be fair, not all girls are going to be kick butt and tough lady characters. I didn't mind the mermaid being more ditzy or Nanny being so motherly, but it would have been better to see more diverse ladies in AHT to offset those two (and Ember, though I love her) being so stereotypical. Good female characters was something Insomniac did very well witht he Spyro franchise but which was not repeated until Skylanders (the worst example of this is LoS, which had exactly two females in the entire trilogy, both of which are very problematic; thank goodness for Skylanders' redemption of Cynder's character potential).

Eh, sorry, then. It came out in a way that made it feel a little like I was being made fun of uvu

And tbh, I think Cynder is the female I have the biggest issue with, and it has nothing to do with her being from the Legend series. I just wish she wasn't... the Smurfette, you know? I mean, I guess Sparx's/Spyro's mom is there too, but she wasn't a prominent character or anything...

I do like her, though. She's a decent character, and she was great in the first game and I think had tons of potential (not nearly enough was explored about her personality-wise imo)//

I'm with you in regards to Cynder, Queen-Cynder. She's a character that had a lot of squandered potential. Her being the only active female character in the entire LoS franchise was really disturbing by the end (and pretty unacceptable). I'm pretty sure Nina the dragonfly died by the time DotD came around; she certainly never got a second mention, which was also quite lame.

I agree on the Cynder thing too, but it never really bothered me too much. I just assume there are other females in the world, especially since we know of Sparx's mother.

As for Nanny and the mermaid from AHT, there were NPCs ho had like, two lines. I can't say my expectations for their representation were high. Though in general, the story/lore of AHT was not very fascinating to me. I loved it for it's humour and game mechanics.

But the humor was exactly the problem - you have two lines to give to a character, and the whole dialogue with the mermaid HAS to be Spyro showing his opinion of how girls are dumb? You have the potential in hand for the Elders, and they all have to be bumbling fools(and Magnus REALLY needed to sound like that and have alcoholic drinks in his house(can't really be sure it's that but that's what I think when he has bottles with crosses on them all over the house)) for Spyro to insist on his idea that old people are boring? There's loads of good jokes in AHT,and instead of sticking to those they went a little too far with some.

I also agree with Cynder being a huge issue and had a lot of potential of being a great character in TLOS. I thought she was fantastic in ANB, but she just went downhill once she turned good. I mean, I did like that idea, but I wish it was handled better. I thought after her disappointing performance during TEN, she could still be redeemed since I thought her attitude at the end of TEN was very promising. But nope, DOTD just killed her character completely.

Now I wish she stayed as a villain, since she was better that way and actually caused more trouble than the main villain himself. I would have been sad by her death or whatever her fate would have been, but I would rather have this then the mess she became.

I agree that TLOS's lack of female cast was a disgrace. I still wish at least one of the guardians in TLOS was female. That would have been great.

For some reason, I always wished Terrador was female.

Terrador would have made an incredible female character! Ignitus could have pulled it off well, too. There's no excuse for not having Volteer and/or Cyril be female, though. Heck, when ANB was the only LoS game out, I thought the Dark Master was going to be female (that would have been so cool).

I don't recall Spyro referring to girls as "dumb". I simply took his "Chicks..." remark as "I don't understand girls". Which is perfectly in character for Spyro, as he has always become uncomfortable when dealing with the actual feminine aspects of a female character. This is also displayed when he is literally speechless while talking to Ember. Contrast this with his interactions with characters like Zoe or Ursula (the former basically being relatively gender neutral in their portrayal, and the latter being "just another bad guy" to Spyro).

As for the Elders, they were perfectly fine. Gay pole dancer dragon FTW! smilie

I can't say the elders in AHT were fine. As funny as Magnus is, he's actually an extremely offensive and nasty gay stereotype that wasn't created for the sake of equality but for the sake of a tasteless joke. But that's a different topic altogether, so... *shrug*

Agreed with you about Spyro's reactions to the other ladies in AHT. He also had no gendered remarks about Teena, the penguin girl, or the Ice Princess.

Tbh I don't really pay attention to the genders of video game characters much. I find that I can often relate to male characters just as much as female characters, but that's just me. Didn't even notice the lack of females in AHT at all until I saw it pointed out here.
Razz Platinum Sparx Gems: 6124
#26 Posted: 04:15:34 08/01/2014
Over time, it's so normal (alas) to see male characters over-represented that I just get extra excited when I see a female playable character at all. But sometimes it stands out in a really strong way (lookin' at you, LoS, with your single female character of note and single one-shot mom stereotype who probably dies and is never mentioned again).

I can't say I find Magnus offensive as he is literally meant as a funny joke that adults can pick up on, much like the other elders, while also being an interesting nod to pop culture. When it's blatantly obvious that something is played for laughs, it's hard for me to take it seriously, and therefore, I can't find it offensive (I mean, if Magnus is offensive, then I guess Zeena from Sonic Lost World is the most offensive female character ever). A character doesn't need to be made for the sake of equality to be inoffensive, nor do they need to carry a preachy message. The humour in AHT was always comparable to something like Family Guy or South Park to me, where nothing is above being laughed over. And to be quite honest, I wish more family friendly media had this. Especially in video games.
