Alright, with Skylanders being on all the different systems, I have some confusion. I have the following games and portals:

Skylanders Spyro Adventure

• PC
  
• 3DS
  

Skylanders Giants

• 360
  

Skylanders Swapforce

• 360
  
• PS3
  

I believe the earlier versions of the portals work for future games, so that means I can grab a used Giants/Swapforce 3DS and still be able to play correct? What about if I pick up a SSA or Giants PS3 version, will the Swapforce portal work for it?

Finally, how do all these actual characters work between all these games? I can own them in one game at a time?

Pretty sure you have to use the swap force portal for the swappable charecters. If you already have all these portals and sytems why dont you try it for yourself

I haven't opened up the Swapforce starter packs yet. I'm still on the fence if I'm going to collect them so I want to be sure before I crack them open and play around with them.

Makes since. I wont have an answer till I get my paycheck and pickup my starter packs

There is a LOT of research to be done in portal compatibility now SF is coming out.

Not in the least for problems like those being reported with the iOS portal resetting figures!

I read somewhere on these forums (or heard on videos shared in these forums), that Swap Force NEEDS a Swap Force portal, that the old portals absolutely will not work with the new games and new figures. And I'm pretty sure this was really official, like it was directly or indirectly from the people who made Swap Force. I believe that the new game and/or figures needed the data organized differently enough (or something like that) that the old portals won't read them correctly. On the plus side, I believe I heard in the same place that the new portal will work with the old games (SSA and Giants).

And you can own your figures in multiple games at once. It's once in, never out. Like, I registered my SSA characters in SSA, like Stealth Elf. When I got Giants, I took ownership there. But in SSA, it still says I own Stealth Elf, even after I used her again and it could check and see that ownership has changed. Same in Giants.

I actually just found the first exception to all of this. I just got my Boomer, who in SSA was my last missing Heroic, so I completed all 32 Heroics and... nothing. The "All 32 Heroics" Accolade only popped when I took BACK ownership of the particular figure. This has been the only evidence I've heard of or seen of it showing any loss of ownership.

Yes, you only gain the Heroic challenges for figures you own in that game.

I can't be bothered to re-own all my figures in SSA then Giants just to unlock all the challenges in both so I stick with them all owned in Giants for now.

I will port ownership of them all into SF and not worry about it too much.

Unless somebody has tested the old portal on the new SF game we still don't know for sure what actually happens. Just as Lightcore figures are officially NOT compatible with SSA but still work partly we need to do actual testing. I will as soon as my Starter pack arrives.
