Cloud Gaming/Streaming Will Be Next...
How do you feel about this? Does this let the air out of your sails for nextgen consoles?
P.S. Game Streaming is not new (if however not popular), but to have a major hardware manufacturer jump on board here is pretty significant.

If anything, the Xbox would be the first to go, considering it's microsoft, and microsoft makes computers.

The same reasons why people complained about the XBox One "Phone Home" and online requirement, which was part of the DRM mechanism I believe. Not everyone has fast internet. In fact, based on research the USA lags behinds other countries on bandwidth--and providers want to charge you a premium on top of it especially if you go beyond a predefined CAP. I like the fact that I can play my games if there's no Internet. It makes playing on the go pretty daunting / limiting.

Here's the thing. It won't ever get to the point where cloud gaming is a more viable method of playing video games than having physical media. The majority of people will always buy physical copies or download them directly to the hard drive.
The only reason why Sony would like cloud gaming is the future is because it means that they get a larger cut of the profit since it cuts out the middle man (ie the retailer) and goes straight from publisher to user. Secondly, just as how not all games are available on Xbox Live, PSN or Steam, not all Playstation games will be available for download on PSN. The number of games from the PS3, PS2, PS1, PSP and PS Vita that are actually available for download is so small compared to the whole library of games for these systems. Gamers will also choose retail, because it will always be the cheaper option (especially second hand) - unless you can pull a Steam and have ridiculously cheap mass sales twice a year and have individual games sales every day. |

I think you assume too much. I think a few things needs to happen infrastructure wise, but I do eventually see this as the "end game". I remember when CDs and DVDs were great, but now no one wants to buy physical...they are fine downloading it to their favorite device and enjoying it immediately. The trend is definitely virtual not physical. Given the fact that people have been play virtual arcade games illegally with emulators (MAME, etc) as well as older gaming platforms play into this mindset.

We're talking about cloud gaming - not download vs physical. Sure, download will be the future for consoles as it already is the norm for PC's (with Steam, Origin etc) but cloud gaming won't ever take off and it's all because of internet speeds. Sure, people will eventually get faster and faster internet speeds so one day everyone with an internet connection will be able to stream 1080p videos without issue - but when that day comes, 4K will be the standard resolution. Then when everyone catches up to 4K, 8K will be the standard etc. Cloud gaming will never become viable for everyone in the world. Physical already is accessible for everyone in the world, and most people are catching up for download to be the best method but cloud never will. |

^I don't disagree, but hasn't technology basically plateaued from a hardware/feature perspective? The next gen games look marginally better...at some point our eyes will fail to see the difference.
Basically, mobile gaming is eating platform gaming's butt, and Sony wants to do something about it.
