That's now how I remember it. I think that at the time it was closed, Megaupload was hosted in the US. The FBI shut the site down, although I can't remember the exact reasoning.

But anyhow, lawmakers are a bunch of middle aged or elderly people who do not use the internet in the way that the younger generation does. They don't necessarily care about the potential ramifications of this law. They don't have to prosecute the people who would violate it. And they probably don't watch YouTube covers or streams. And these big software companies that support the legislation (and are paying off our lawmakers to pass it) make a ton of their money off of content being legitimately purchased. And they're all paranoid that the internet is costing them in the long run.

I realize that's a generalization, but it could be true! *brick'd*

Basically, If SOPA comes effective again, Covers and Parodies will be ilegal and I'll basically have to rethink my life all over again.

It will affect the rest of the world because the American government thinks that it rules the world.
Remember the British guy who got exodited to the US for having a website that linked to places to watch films? He broke the US' laws and they got him despite being in a different country.
What they are really doing is updating things like the data protection act and copywrite laws that are very out of date. According to the current one it is illegal to burn songs off a disk that you have bought in to digital files on to your computer. They want you to buy the same thing online in digital files too, yet iTunes has let you do this for years.
