And there is mention of pods that spawn chompies that sidekicks can clear?

Yeah. The chompie pods are right sods. They spew out Chompies which you tap for a bit of energy. If you leave them for too long, the chompies burrow underground which leaves a mound you have to spend 5 gold to clear.
The pods themselves will eventually run out of chompies, leaving them empty. Only Sidekicks can clear Chompie pods (in about 2 minutes) but should they become empty, any skylander can clear them, in about 15 minutes.

They're more trouble than they're worth, just leaving a right mess if you overlook them (or wait for your 2 sidekicks to hurry up and finish doing something so you can use them again)

For the record the reward for clearing an empty chompie was 1000 gold and 25 skylander hero points. No idea what the extra reward for clearing an active chompie with sidekick will be. And for 300 gems, I'm not about to find out any time soon.

I need to clear another pod to confirm this but it looks the reward for clearing an active pod is a gold chest.

If so, that's a nice reward. Too bad I don't have one of these guys and it will be a while before I win one on a spin I'd guess.

Do you get anything for clearing mounds?

I presume the payout will normally be 500 gold not 1000.

I have yet to get a pod. With my dad and son, they seem to hide behind buildings. I've filled all my areas behind stuff because of Hyde. Maybe that's keeping me from getting them?

Mine have all been in clear sight but I don't have sidekick yet.

I have killed two pods so far, gotten one gold chest and one nothing.

I haven't yet seen an active pod. I think I need to rearrange my islands to force Hyde and the pods out in the open.

I like the new story behind the Skylander sidekicks, I hope they make them playable characters in the newer games

^ No kidding, they have been the biggest joke in the console games thus far, they need to make them actually DO something other than being annoying. Maybe Lost Islands is a sign of VV/Activision coming to this realization.

Well, they DO draw in enemies and take damage for you, but yea, they're basically useless in the console game.
