It's a bit hard to give general advice in writing, what kind of style are you going for? What are you writing your fan fic for? etc. That kind of info might help.

Well, I have some basic ideas, but I need somewhere to start.

Well, I guess it depends on what your basic ideas are. It's a bit hard to give advice on how to start a fanfic. You just start...and then the ideas somehow come into the story.

First: think of a main character(s)
Second: think of a plot
Third: uhh, write?

You can't necessarily force an idea out of you. You have to think of something that appeals to you and begin to go over some "What if?" scenarios in your head. And if any of those ideas sound interesting and fun to write about, then you start to make an outline. <.<

Congrats! You wasted five seconds reading this.

Yeah. Look at me. My fanfic was originally gonna be a play. But I found that that wouldn't work so well.
What KIND of fanfic is gonna be?
Romance
Action
Mystery
Stuff like this should be considered to think about. And if its a FANFIC, what is it gonna be about? It could be a crossover between two fanfics like mine.

True! A story should never be forced, it should come to you naturally. Start with an ideal you like and go with it, you can always change stuff as you go.
