It just occurred to me, after having rarely/never used an older Skylander in my Giants game - how did they handle the Soul Gem abilities for all of the older Skylanders? Do you need to put in Spyro's Adventure, get the gem, and buy the ability there? Or can older Skylanders buy those abilities in Giants right away?

I'm worried because I no longer have my SA save data and I do NOT want to have to go through the whole game again just for the Soul Gems.

I'm not 100% sure but I think you can buy it right away in Giants.

Yes, they're basically pre-loaded with it.

Some Soul Gem abilities are useless for Giants, such as swimming ones.

s1 s2 and lc remakes of s1 characters already have there soul gem

Yeah, when I first got Giants I wondered about this. 16 new Skylanders, 16 levels, so only 16 Soul Gems. ANYBODY else, you already have the Soul Gem, you only have to pay the coins. So it's just like any other upgrade, but more expensive.

And yeah, the ones with water-based upgrades are pretty useless. Like Stump Smash. Not 100% useless, but mostly. There are some Heroic Challenges with navigable water still. In levels I don't think there's a single spot, though. (What's weird is that they gave Thumpback a special swimming animation anyway. A bit underdone, but it's there... I really need to remind myself what Chill does).

Chill simply levitates, nothing too fancy.

I admit I was a little disapointed in the lack of water that makes the likes of Double Trouble, Zap, and Stump Smash's soul gems worthless, and Thumpback has such a fun swimming animation.

It's present in a number of heroic challenges and Pirate seas, but outside that? For shame.
