At first glance, it looks like an exact clone of Capcom's old "Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo" game, but with Skylanders instead of Street Fighter characters.

(Actually, it's a little different, because you can place the "crash gems" and they won't detonate until they encounter another gem of the same color. In SPF2T they'd explode immediately upon touching the ground. That minor difference is probably the only thing that will keep Capcom from suing.)

That was a fun puzzle game back in the day, so it's definitely a good choice for them to copy.

Why can't they just make these Universe mini games? It'd be free and it's not like Universe gets lots of updates

That's their new direction. Universe is getting kicked to the curb in favor of these mini games. No more social interaction--they're making a bold antithesis statement to Infinity's direction.

Social interaction on the Internet will always be a dicey proposition with games aimed at kids. It invites a world of pain you don't want drawn to your franchise. All that has to happen is some Fox News story where some kid has something inappropriate said to him while playing Skylanders with a random XBox Live user and the unwashed masses will instantly think your game promotes evil. It doesn't matter that their are parent controls or anything, one careless/clueless parent's example and it all turns into PR nightmares.

I mean look at a game like Mass Effect, it showed a bare blue bum for about half a second in a sex scene that would be tame for the Disney Channel and Fox was ready to string it up next to GTA and Mortal Kombat.

We're in a ultra touchy PC world these days where anyone can blame anyone except themselves...I don't need to hear this on a video game.

I would be sad to see Universe go, if it had been any good. It was pretty poor to be honest.
I think the more games that make use of the figures and portals the better.

Can you imagine a straight up PvP fighting game, Street Fighter style?
"Spyro Vs Cynder, Round 1 FIGHT!"
Or a Monkey Island style point and click adventure featuring the Skylanders?

There are so many ways they could take this, each one would be extra game sales that could help drive figure sales.
