With the success Activision has had with the Skylanders concept, we can expect more publishers to follow suit with fleets of plastic knick-knacks and gewgaws that interact with our games. First cab off the rank has been the recently announced Disney Infinity, with toys and games based off The Big D’s wide portfolio of beloved properties. This only scratches the surface of what is possible though, what other collectables might we see in years to come?

Pokémon

Let’s get the most obvious one out of the way first. The Pokémon universe has been built from the ground up around the idea “gotta catch ‘em all!” The Pokémon merchandising machine is well oiled, and with Nintendo including a NFC receiver on the Wii U gamepad, this seems to be approaching an absolute certainty. Let’s hope it comes married to the 3D Zeldaesque Pokémon RPG I’ve always wanted. If ‘Poke-Landers’ doesn’t get announced at some point this year, I will be absolutely flabbergasted.

X Wing Vs Tie Fighter

The recent popularity of Fantasy Flight’s X-Wing Miniatures tabletop game has shown there is a market out there for high quality miniature spaceships married to a compelling game. Surely the next step is to take it off the table and stick it in a video game? I know I am not the only Screenie out there that longs for a return of the X-Wing/Tie Fighter series of games. If they were to reintroduce the series alongside collectable miniature ships, I might as well just give them my credit card there and then.

FIFA

Sports memorabilia is another burgeoning market, with team strips and figurines of top players fetching big bucks. EA is never shy of making money, and has had great success at monetising their major franchises with virtual collectable card games for team management games. A football themed miniatures range could be a real bonanza, potentially targeted at younger markets in order to build brand loyalty young.

Dr Who

There has never really been a good Dr Who game; perhaps a Skylanders style game could change that? I envisage a game where you can choose your favourite doctor. You could then purchase monster packs, each of which contains a full episodic game, similar to the TV show. Each episode could be played by each doctor separately, with each doctor having different companions and equipment, opening different pathways and endings for the story. After writing this I REALLY want this game!

Lego

The Lego video games are some of the most popular and successful games of recent years. The Skylanders concept is about kids being able to play with their toys both in real life and in game. Surely a mash-up of these approaches is a sure fire hit? Lego already sells series of blind bagged minifigs, Imagine if you could use these figurines in game? The modular nature of Lego might even make it possible to recreate any Lego models in-game with content being created alongside all new models.

[Editor's note: The creators have the Lego games have officially announced that they have no plans for a Skylander-style game.]

Sonic the Hedgehog

Because, let’s face it, Sonic has been rebooted in just about every other type of game possible, and Sega are running out of ways to flog a dead horse. This could be problematic when they produce large quantities of Nack the Weasel figurines and sell approximately 57.

How about you, what IPs would you like to see transition to a Skylanderian future?

Disney already owns half the properties I'd like to see have a Toy/Game line I.e. Marvel and Star Wars. Other properites could be any other sports game and I'd love to see a Simpsons type skylanders adventure game.

Pokemon in my opinion would be too over board, but who knows skylanders may one day rival 650ish figures but any game to me would have to have more of a monster feel than a human feel otherwise what is special. Most kids have dolls like GI Joe or Barbie to play with, it's nothing new. However then lies the problem how do you justify a world of monsters, skylanders has a good idea so they can just keep adding as many as they feel. But if they did a Final Fantasy game, you have your sixish main characters to the party but how do you a justify buying the figures cause then it may turn into you can't advance the story without this figure of a main character and side monsters to by for let's say special moves would piss people off majorly.

Skylanders to me though is coming across a the case of having too many character but not enough story for them. Yeah each character has a background paragraph and they do have a quick few phrases but it lacks character interaction that gives solid personality. I guess you could therefore implement any personality you wanted but to me it distances myself from them.

So any IP who does that idea could very easily have these problems, it's a tricky ground to cover and personally I think to make it work you need something made for the premise of the toys. Not slap toys to an existing idea that could lead to further complications because of the difficultly of meshing. And it would probably piss off the existing fans because now they have to dish out extra money to enjoy an experience that has typically been given free or through hours of grinding. With skylanders we all came in with the idea that we were going to have to pay for the toys separate, I don't think others would like it forced on them.

There are simply too many Pokemon to make a Skylanders-esque game, and there is a big difference between "gotta catch 'em all" (which is a gameplay mechanic) and "gotta buy 'em all" (which is a cost required TO play whatever the gameplay mechanic actually is).

There's only one I'd like to see, Super Smash Bros., and that's not even anything I'd be disappointed to never have.

I would be mad if they made a Pokemon one because they would need to cut out a ton of them, or there would just be too many figures.

Tekken with the Skylanders concept would be cool. I would then buy a Yoshimitsu and Jack-6 figure.

I think Disney has me covered on the IPs I care about. I'd love to see an All-Star Video Game with about every character from the last 30 years in figure form.

RIP GhostRoaster. He's reanimated as TakeYourLemons but occasionally is resurrected from the beyond when needed.

Pokemon at one time kind of had an figure game, or at least a few of the series did. There was a thing when Hasbro had the license to the series called "Trainers Choice" where you placed a figure onto a nob thingie and you could battle gym leaders, other trainers, etc.

Later on there was a thing called "Pokemon Trading Figure Game", using the absolutely beautifully crafted Kaiyodo figures on the top of them.

Unfortunately neither caught on (which is especially sad for the TFG because those are versions of the Japanese figures that never get released here) so I don't really think they'll be perusing any sort of new NFC versions of the franchise any time soon.

IF they do, I'd imagine something like the Rumble series would probably be the best bet. Outside of that, Nintendo has been iffy on paid DLC (with the exception of a few newer games) especially a game that revolves around purchasing new characters. The next closest approximation would be using their TCG cards and having them being used to unlock Pokemon in a TCG game.

Doctor Who, just shut up and take my money though. That'd be pretty sweet. I can see them launching a game with Eleven, Oswin and like...the TARDIS or something in the starter pack, and then a handful of other characters in the first "wave".

SSB I think would also fall under a similar Pokemon system, but it could be a great way for them to unlock and have "Retro" characters in the game. Ie, Mewtwo, Roy, Dr. Mario, etc. They wouldn't be unlocked in the main game, and not required at all for completion or anything. Then maybe we can finally have a Non Specific Action Figure
