I think everyone in this forum would tend to agree it's a good game. And a lot of us, those who played the first (Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, or SSA), can't help but judge it in comparison with the first game.
On it's own: Collecting more Skylander figures is incredibly addictive, so you will likely spend money on it and continue to spend money on it. Be forewarned. Other than that little caveat, it's such a cool concept that the progress and modifications you make to a character are saved ON the figure. This becomes extra cool if you have friends/family who also play, you can bring your figures over and play with the figures you're familiar with, including experience and upgrades. In comparison: This game offers much more gameplay than the first. Firstly, the first game allowed characters to level up to a cap of Level 10, while Giants extends that to 15 (a character who goes past 10 and returns to the first game will show in SSA as Level 10 with their Level 10 Health level). Also, Giants includes another way to develop your characters, in the way of Quests, personal challenges to complete. It also adds Arena challenges, big battle gauntlets to complete for money. Conversely, there are fewer levels, (16 compared to I think 23), but I have the impression that the Giants levels are generally larger, so it might work out to the same amount of gameplay. Note that when it comes to figures, anybody from SSA (Series 1, having a green base) and any Series 2 (figures with a orange base who are reposed from SSA characters) will work in either game, while new characters (one Giant and one non-Giant for each element, so 16 in all, not counting variants of those characters) will only work in Giants. Similarly, S1 and S2 will unlock Heroic Challenges to complete for stat rewards in SSA, while S2 and the new characters unlock them in Giants.
