how come at the end of the game, machine ghost was alive? i thought he died?!

I've been wondering that same thing myself. They honestly don't explain why that happens anywhere in the game, as far as I've seen.

Here's my understanding:
He was a ghost who years ago made a home inside the robot, becoming the personality of the robot. Unlike Kaos' Conquertron, or the robots you fight, this robot is different, it needs a driver such as your Skylanders or Ermit, so this robot probably never had any A.I., it was empty originally - of thought process - and was basically a robot-shaped car.

Since he wouldn't shut up and kept trying to make friends with Ermit, Ermit got annoyed and ditched the robot on that Ice planet/island.

When he "died", it was actually that the avalanche knocked something loose or something, sapping his energy.

In actuality, he only needed to reboot in order to get going again.

Also we can hear that Ermit is driving the robot, so maybe Ermit salvaged him and fixed whatever.

Didn't the Ghost and/or Ermit say something about this during the boss fight?

My take on it: the ghost isn't even a real ghost but actually data. You can't have a ghost malfunction...
