This little calculation is pretty much the summary of the following article. Pretty interesting number there. In one minute, more Skylanders are sold than most people have in their entire collections!

Quote:
147 Skylanders toys have been bought per minute since the first game in October 2011, for a total of 100 million toys to date.

Hmmm. I wonder what they consider as a "Skylander bought" for that number?

I mean, your standard eBay Skylander will be "sold" three times - from Activision to Standard Store to Scalper to Collector.

Likewise, each Skylander in each console starter pack would need to be 'bought' in bulk by Sony, Nintendo, etc. before they even reach the standard store, so every starter pack out there generates six sales for the three figures inside (three from the game company, three from the store) BEFORE a normal consumer buys it.

In that sense, it's not hard to imagine 100 million sales generated from 30 million Skylander figures.

Good point, but still, 30 million is a lot.

I thought about this too. I assumed it referred to initial sales from store to consumer, but who knows?

I won't deny it. Even if they're actually "only" manufacturing about one Skylander every second, that's still a pretty ridiculous number. smilie

And when they were trying to sell the idea of 'Skylanders' to Activision a couple years ago, I doubt any of them expected it would become THIS big, and that they'd sell hundreds of thousands of figures with names as simple as "Bash," "Chop Chop," or "Zap." smilie

It's likely sales from Activision to the retailer. Not all retailers report their sales (from shelf to consumer) back to Activision - so the only really accurate way they have to measure sales is how many *they* have sold.

Personally, I'm more curious if this includes A) Giveaways, like E3, Flocked Stump Smash, etc., smilie How the three-packs and Adventure packs figure in (Is a three pack three figures? Is an adventure pack four figures? Or does a single package count as a single sale?) and C) Does this include the figure sales from the starter packs?

This is easy. They only care about their pockets. The number is Activision to dealer sales numbers. This is what is reported on their financial earnings to shareholders.
