hacking discussion? [CLOSED]

Hey all, I didn't see anything in the "Forum Rules" regarding this, so if this is an inappropriate topic, please let me know and I will cease and desist.

I've hacked the RFID tech on Skylanders (for fun, not profit; I just *had* to see Ninjini!) and I was wondering if there is a place to discuss this sort of stuff...

Thanks!

Well, generally speaking...it seems like most people here are against hacking the game. Why this is different from any other series it's hard to say. This forum in particular has a few people who work at Activision and Toys for Bob, so you might get messages from them about this kind of stuff.

Personally, it's kind of neat sometimes to see people delve into the game and see what makes it tick. That's how we ended up learning about some scrapped stuff like the Sniper character and the red colored Spyro.

You know, I never got to see red spyro or sniper. I looked up the youtube video but it was deleted. Can someone post pics or a video of them? Thanks!

Yup, this is the thread here, and here's where the images are at.

Thanks for the reply, spyroflame0487! I'd never heard of Sniper before; that's very cool; I wonder if there are others...

by hack do you mean you have written the id of a different skylander to the rfid chip in an existing one? this way allowing the hacked skylander to be used by someone else?

Hmm... *LIGHTBULB* Maybe all this hacking could be used to put data on my Ninjini!

i've done some digging on this subject but it seems like it's just not possible at the moment.

the skylanders portal has default, very basic RFID reader/writer drivers, so you can program directly using various open source RFID libraries.

several people have been able to mess around with the data on certain characters, like giving them tons of gold, but there are protected bits on the RFID chip (written at the factory, permanent information, cannot be overwritten) and those bits are the ones that determine the figure's identity. so no you cannot write eruptor onto stealth elf.

also i think the specifications of the skylanders RFID tags are proprietary, so you cannot just grab a generic rfid and write a skylander onto it.

at least, this is as far as i read. there may have been new developments in the past month or two

and matteomax, i'd suggest looking up skylanders hacking and trying to find some forums that have people dealing with that.
they could probably tell you how to set up a dev environment and go spelunking inside your ninjini's RFID tag

Yeah, a user named matteo (not to be confused with Matteomax here) has been posting his video/image hacks on here, and some of his hack videos got removed by Activision and they gave matteo copyright strikes on youtube.

it would be nice to be able to change the textures. that way you could make variants appear as variants in game. unfortunately, Activision doesn't like hackers and anyone that can hack wont for fear that Activision will come after them.

I will admit I was involved partially with the Sidekicks info leak (no harm meant to Activision or TFsmilie, but that kind of hacking never actually wrote to the figure, it just tricked the Wii into thinking one figure was another. That was almost a year ago, and I haven't done anything like that since (and haven't attempted anything for Giants, either), so I wouldn't gain Activision's attention.

Anyways, talking about hacking is frowned upon by many on this board.

i have only burning hatred and loathing for activision, there are ways to avoid them.

toys for bob though, they deserve so much more out of this deal, activision is turning them into dev slaves smilie

I keep seeing comments like the above "hacking is frowned upon on this board" - I assume that's only in reference to uptight posters and not an official forum stance? Or has something changed?

Here's the closest thing to an official rule:

Don't post links to illegal material.
It's just in no way approriate for a website based around a game such as Spyro the Dragon. Anyone who does so will be banned immediately. Asking for ROMs will get you a swift ban as well though discussion is allowed as long as you aren't boasting about the fact or you're providing a method for others to get them no matter how cryptic.

Yeah I'm sorry but that's a pretty big difference between "don't post and support warez" and "look what I found in this game". I'm pretty sure if someone posted a tool to play as any skylander someone would be ticked and fairly so. If someone talked about their endeavors and finding cut or unmentioned content in the game, what does it harm? Nothing. Even if Activision doesn't like it, they have no basis to target anything.

The only reason they can get away with a copyright claim on youtube is because a) youtube is broken and b) becuase the game is copyright them.

Well as I see it if u buy the product its urs to do so with as long as you have no intention tlo sell or interupt anothers exp with the same product so since there is no online in the game more power to u bud enjoy ur toy the way u see fit.....
But only thing I see them doing is closing the page I don't see activion being able to target anyone on the forum, if so they should target the people that repaint and scalpt mod as well lol. Who cares w activion thinks on this anywas the figure arnt realy part of the game really anywas because u have to buy them.they are not persay in the game meaning they are not in the game they are in a toy...
But I know someone will argue this so ill say I'm wrong so ill drop it lol. No I don't support hackers but I do support me doing what I want to a product none else will be playing with just me. If I can make it more enjoyable then a greedy company that makes it I think there just jellous lol.

the best way to say it is
"don't post stuff that might get the site owner sued"
technically, even talking about manipulating the rfid tags of characters = getting sued, thanks to completely broken american copyright law and activision being the earthly incarnation of satan
