In Giants, don't need to.

In SSA, it's in plain sight in Stonetown, if thats what you're wondering.

In Giants there are 16 new characters, 8 Giants and 8 normal sized, nicknamed on here Newlanders. 16 characters, 16 levels, coincidence? smilie You find one per level.

Therefore, you only need/can find Soul Gems for new characters. For any old or re-released characters - such as Lightning Rod - in the game you automatically have the Soul Gem, all that's left is to save up for it (and possibly buying any upgrades which are prerequisites).
