You need to sync your figure wearing a hat through the Lair to add that hat to your collection.

Lairs aren't up right now though, so you'll have to wait.

^ For me, the updating turns out wrong, when I did Tirgger Happy wearing Wabbit Ears at Level 10, it appeared as Level 9 with the Jester Hat! What's happening? It's that way with all of my Skylanders.

Actually, D-Rex, you can update your characters without the Lair. If you have your Portal plugged into your computer and go into your Collections tab, then click on one of the Skylanders, it'll bring up a menu with a button that says Update near the bottom. Put a figure on the Portal, wait for it to recognize it, then click Update. If the Skylander is wearing a hat, then the game should tell you that you've unlocked that hat. You might have to do it several times for it to work (at least, I have to).
