How do i use a lock puzzle key?

simply buy them and then when you get to a puzzle door if you don't feel like solving the lock puzzle you can use a puzzle key instead.

But how do i use them? there is no button or question or anything. the puzzle just starts and i have to solve it even though i have bought a dozen of those keys. it never never works.
