How does the Portal of Power (TM) work for handhelds? I think people would find it quite difficult to carry the 3DS/Wii U in one hand and a Portal of Power (TM) in the other...

Dude why would you carry a WiiU with you? its kinda dumb since its just taking up space in your hand and cannot be moved more than a certain distance from the plug... Moving on, the 3DS game registers up to 2 skylanders to play as, which you switch between on the touch screen, and the portal is ONLY used to ADD a Skylander/Switch out a Skylander in your roster, Skylanders are only put on the portal for 3DS games to switch one of your characters out and to update the level, hero level, etc, and as such the portal isn't actually in USE unless you need to change 1 of your 2 skylanders, and isn't something you do on the spot, you do that from the Hub world. But Don't worry, you only need 2 elements to complete a level 100%, so you don't need to worry about doing a multiple times just to get everything, and the elements needed are shown in the level select screen of said level.

Long story, short the WiiU is a console, not a handheld. It simply comes with a tablet-like controller that some WiiU games can treat as a handheld but even then the controller must be a certain distance from the console, itself.

Actually Jet-Vac that was a good question. You can play Giants with the wiiu on the tv or on the tablet. The tablet has a sensors in it but for a game like Giants it will still get the POP signal from the console itself. I have read that the game pad can read a signal from the console up to 26 ft with no problem. So you can play the entire game from the game pad without using your tv but you are still getting the signal from the console. YouTube has several videos about it if you want more details on it.
